Abstract This research aims to explore the significance of Ushul Fiqh within the paradigm of the unity of knowledge (Unity of Science), focusing on the integration between Islamic law and other sciences. The main concern is how Ushul Fiqh can provide a holistic theoretical foundation for religious values such as wisdom, justice, and public welfare in everyday life. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing a literature review to explore the meaning, perception, and complex context within a research framework. Key findings indicate that Ushul Fiqh plays a crucial role in understanding the fundamentals of Islamic law and integrating religious aspects, reason, and practical experience in life. This research aims to identify and analyze the principles of Ushul Fiqh that can support the integration of various scientific disciplines and assess their relevance in the context of contemporary knowledge. The unity of knowledge in this research refers to efforts to amalgamate various disciplines into an interconnected entity. This involves integrating Islamic law (Ushul Fiqh) with other sciences, such as logic, Arabic grammar, theology, jurisprudence, and Qur\u27anic and Hadith studies. In this context, the unity of knowledge aims to create coherence among various branches of knowledge to provide a holistic understanding of religious values such as wisdom, justice, and public welfare in everyday life. Gender Equality within Family in Islamic Perspective: Insights from The Hadiths of Ummul Mukminin

    Get PDF
The concept of gender equality is crucial in reinforcing societal foundations and addressing issues of injustice. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding gender equality within the context of families, recognized as one of society\u27smost influential institutions. By exploring gender dynamics within the family, this research draws on the Hadith, which encapsulates historical records and narratives from the Prophet Muhammad\u27s life in a patriarchal Arab society. Despite societal norms, the Prophet’s Hadith texts, driven by principles of equality and justice, advocate for equal relationships between men and women, sparking considerable debate and protest from his contemporaries. The significance of Hadith texts from Ummul Mukminin (the Mothers of the Believers) in discussing gender relations within the family lies in their potential to serve as a reference source. Utilizing content analysis as a methodology, this research provides a comprehensive examination of relevant Hadiths and their implications for modern gender equality within the family. The findings highlight the Prophet’s dedication to creating a model of marital relations based on mutual respect, compassion, and equality. The study positions these texts as guides for families, helping them reinforce their functions and internalize equality values, contributing to the formation of a maslahah family—a family governed by principles prioritizing societal well-being

Female Ulamā and Religious Moderation in Indonesia: A Study on the Agency and Authority of KUPI and JP3M

    Get PDF
The term ulamā is not exclusively associated with men but also includes women. However, despite the recognition of female ulamā, male ulamā continue to dominate public perception in Indonesian Muslim society, particularly in the realm of fatwās. As a result, the significant contributions of female ulamā remain largely undocumented in the historical development of Islam in Indonesia. Given the extensive yet often overlooked role of female ulamā, the establishment of the Indonesian Congress of Female Ulamā (Kongres Ulama Perempuan Indonesia, KUPI) and the Association of Female Islamic Boarding School Leaders and Preachers (Jam’iyah Perempuan Pengasuh Pesantren dan Muballighah, JP3M) marks a significant development. These two institutions serve as platforms for female ulamā to convene and assert their influence through various scholarly and social activities. This study uses a qualitative research approach, with data presented in a descriptive narrative format. A qualitative approach is chosen to enable an in-depth exploration of the role of KUPI and JP3M female ulamā in promoting religious moderation in Indonesia. This approach enables a contextual analysis of both the subjects and objects of study, preventing the risk of overgeneralization of the observed phenomena

The Ottoman Approach to Scientific Classification in Tafsir History: A Study of Taskopruluzade Ahmad Efendi’s ‘Miftâhu’s-Saâde’

    Get PDF
This study presents an analytical investigation of the historical aspect of tafsir within the Ottoman tradition, as found in the literary composition "Miftāhus-Sa\u27âda," which was authored by Taskopruluzade (d. 968/1561). This work holds a significant role in the classification of knowledge, serving as the foundational underpinning for the establishment of scientific traditions within the Ottoman Empire. Through the lens of this work, the historical narrative of tafsir is recontextualized to align with the scientific framework inherent in the Ottoman tradition, thus imparting a distinctive character to the realm of Qur\u27anic interpretation during the Ottoman Empire\u27s tenure. Employing historical research methodologies encompassing heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, this investigation critically examines the history of scientific classification, a bedrock for shaping the taxonomy of categorized disciplines within their respective contexts. The research delves deeply into the composition of "Miftâhu’s-Saâde," offering a comprehensive perspective on the evolution of tafsir history. The findings of this research underscore that, in the process of Science Classification congruent with the scientific ethos of the Ottoman Empire, Taskopruluzade, within "Miftâhu’s-Saâde," undertakes three pivotal tasks. Firstly, he evaluates classical tafsir works through the lens of scientific classification norms entrenched in the Ottoman tradition. Secondly, these appraised tafsir works are juxtaposed with others, facilitating the establishment of benchmarks and taxonomies that wield considerable influence in guiding the trajectory of tafsir history. Thirdly, a comprehensive exploration ensues into the interplay between interpretive works and the activities of interpretation. The implications of this discourse offer a substantive contribution, deepening the comprehension of tafsir history and the classification of knowledge within the scholarly milieu of the Ottoman Empire

To what Extent Can the Diversity of Qur’anic Tafsir be Described as ‘Traditions of Reason’

    Get PDF
This paper examines tafsir as one of the oldest scientific disciplines developed by Muslims, who experienced dialectical shifts from time to time. Early tafsir was characterized by the bi al-mathur tradition or by its reliance on riwayah sources. While it is commonly argued that this mode of interpretation leaves no place for the mufassir\u27s intervention, his subjectivity and rationality in choosing the preferred tradition cannot be ignored. Following that, tafsir evolved according to the bi al-ra\u27yi tradition which is believed to emphasize the mufassir’s reasoning while interpreting the Qur’an. This paper is addressed to examine this categorization, using Sherman Jackson’s traditions of reason that aim to compromise tafsir with varying hues of traditionalist and rationalist perspectives. This paper employs the library method by reviewing relevant literature to answers the main question. In the end, the limitations of a tafsir can be accepted as traditions of reason as long as the interpretation adheres to the fundamental criteria of interpretation. This includes mufassir’s profound understanding, no conflict with other verses or hadith, and, in many cases, its conformity with logic. Traditional and Rational elements are complementary and must be addressed proportionately. The emphasis on reason has the potential to lead to the mufassir\u27s personal preferences and biases. Meanwhile, the usage of traditional riwayah will limit interpretive space and the context\u27s applicability

    Get PDF
The impact of digital technology on Indonesian society has been profound, leading to changes in cultural and religious practices. This study focuses on the phenomenon of Gus Baha\u27s Jalalayn Tafsir recitation on YouTube and aims to understand how this has become a contemporary fragment in the history of tafsir recitation in Indonesian pesantrens. The study employs a media theory approach popularized by Marshall McLuhan to analyze the workings and impact of this recent phenomenon. McLuhan\u27s theory includes three main ideas, such as Medium is The Message and Medium as Extension of Man, which are used to explore the new workings of Gus Baha\u27s Jalalayn Tafsir recitation on YouTube, as well as the Global Village and Technology Determinism to understand the impact of this phenomenon. The study seeks to answer two key questions: (1) how is the phenomenon of Gus Baha\u27s Tafsir recitation on YouTube and (2) how it has become part of the long history of pesantren tradition. The results of this study will provide insights into how digital technology has changed religious practices in Indonesia and the role of YouTube in this change

Using an analysis of historical methods, the author concludes that the genealogical roots of Dalail Khairat\u27s fasting go back to the first mujiz, namelySayyid al-Imam Muhammad bin Sulaiman al-Jazuli. In addition, the Dalail\u27s fasting riyadah has an influence on the mental and psychological state of the practitioner. This shows that the Darul Falah Islamic Boarding School is able to maintain this fasting tradition in a sustainable manner

Muballigh Online Reception of Hadith Tasyabbuh and Intention (Controversion of Wishing Merry Christmas): Penerimaan Mubaligh Online atas Hadis Tasyabbuh dan Niat (Kontroversi Mengucapkan Selamat Natal)

    No full text
The law of wishing Merry Christmas by Muslims is always debated and can be an indicator to determine the level of religious moderation. There are at least three groups in the legal debate wishing Merry Christmas, namely groups that allow, prohibit, and situational. One of the figures that has attracted public attention regarding the law of wishing Merry Christmas is Dr. Buya Ar Razzy through Deddy Corbuzier’s YouTube podcast. By applying Stuart Hall’s reception theory, this study found that the reception of hadith tasyabbuh and intentions in the podcast are included in the negotiation category. This welcoming pattern is proof that ar Razzy is trying to spread a moderate mindset. This moderation has implications for the creation of cyber Muslims who are wiser in responding to differences. This is reflected in the digital response in the podcast comments. In addition, the emergence of many video clips on YouTube Shorts with positive narratives is another proof that more and more parties agree with the moderate opinion and mission presented by ar Razzy
