Freud\u27s Psychoanalysis on the Religious Practice of Manhaj Salaf as a Psychic Mechanism in Facing Modernity in Indonesia
This paper aims to examine how the religious practice of manhaj Salaf in Indonesia can be understood through the psychoanalytic framework of Sigmund Freud. In the last two decades, the growth of this movement reflects the search for moral certainty and identity in the midst of a crisis of meaning in modernity. The formulation of this research problem includes: (1) how the structure of id, ego, and superego works in the formation of Salafi piety and moral discipline; (2) what psychic defense mechanisms appear in their religious practices; and (3) how those psychic dynamics operate in response to the uncertainty and pressures of modernity. Using a qualitative approach based on literature review, this study hypothesizes that Salafi religious practices function as a psychic mechanism to reduce existential anxiety through the formation of collective superegos, sublimation, and social projection. The results of the analysis show that the internalization of strict religious norms provides a sense of psychological security and identity stability, but also has the potential to create excessive guilt and exclusivity towards other groups. In conclusion, Freud\u27s psychoanalysis provides a strong perspective to understand the psychological function of Salafi religiosity in the context of Indonesian modernity and opens up space for further studies of the relationship between moral obedience, psychological health, and social dynamics.
Implementation of the Hadith about Deliberation: A Case Study of Catfish Farming as A Consensus Space for Farmers: Implementasi Hadis tentang Musyawarah: Studi Kasus Budidaya Ikan Lele sebagai Ruang Musyawarah bagi Petani
Conflicts among farmers over water resource management are often a significant problem, especially during the dry season. This is made all the more complex by the fact that these problems occur on a protracted basis without any concrete action being taken to resolve them. One of these realities occurs in the community of Kedungrejo Village, Malang District. The emergence of catfish cultivation is an alternative business and an effort to form a space for community consensus in discussion. This study analyzes the role of catfish farming as a consensus space in two forms of questions. First, how is the relevance between the hadith about deliberation and catfish cultivation as a community consensus space? Second, how is the impact of catfish farming as a consensus space in breaking the tension in the community? Using a descriptive qualitative approach and Miles and Huberman\u27s analysis, this study found that catfish farming is not only an alternative economic solution but also fosters social solidarity through deliberation. Meanwhile, the hadith about deliberation in farmers\u27 socio-economic practices confirms that Islamic values can be applied in community life. As a result, catfish cultivation in Kedungrejo is proof that deliberation can be a tool for conflict resolution while improving community welfare
The Dynamics of Religion and Ecology in Indonesia: An Overview of Environmental Social Movements from 1990-2022
In the longstanding debate over the relationship between religion and ecology, there are two major camps. One side argues that religion contributes to ecological destruction, while the other side argues that religion is a force for saving the environment. Yet both sides tend to view religion as a fixed set of beliefs or practices. This article argues that the relationship between religion and ecology is contested and changing. It provides evidence from an empirical study of how social movements use lived religion, meaning everyday practices instead of doctrines or expert definitions. The study used framework synthesis to select and analyze 244 qualitative studies on Indonesian environmental social movements active between 1990 and 2022, resulting in data about 208 movements spread across 38 provinces. 167 of these movements involved lived religion in some way, leading to four findings about religion and ecology: 1) structural factors influencing social movements to include religion in their ecological responses; 2) dynamic relationship between religion and ecology both within each religious community and throughout history; 3) usefulness of lived religion to show how Indonesian religions and traditions provide resources for environmental movements; and 4) extensive creative responses used by social movements to address environmental crises
Religious Tolerance and Multicultural Interactions Among Arabic, Chinese, and Malay Ethnicities in Palembang: A Sociological Perspective on Harmony and Social Integration
This research focuses on accommodating social interaction between Arab, Chinese (Chinese) and Malay groups as a model of multicultural education. This accommodative social interaction is very important because, without accommodative social interaction, different ethnic groups can\u27t live together. This research answers the question of how accommodating social interaction between ethnic groups in Palembang is a multicultural education. This research method uses a qualitative approach to describe accommodative social interactions. Meanwhile, data collection techniques are carried out through interviews, observation and documentation. The research results show that accommodative social interaction is carried out by understanding religious and cultural values between ethnic groups and implementing deliberative accommodation, positive law enforcement and tolerance
Cultured People In The Millennial Era From A Christian Perspective And Their Red Threads In The Theological Documents Of The Batak Protestant Christian Church
Humans will never be separated from their culture, and that is the basis for labeling cultured humans. Over time, the culture has developed, which has also received influence from the times. It is not surprising that in the current millennial era, many values from culture have faded, or even experienced a transformation of meaning because they have to be adapted to the millennial era. Of course the study of theology, dogmatics, and practical ethics will not ignore the understanding of this reality. This article explains the Christian perspective on cultured humans in the millennial era. Used qualitative (literature) research methods, this article describe the Biblical basis of cultured humans from both the perspective of the Old Testament and the New Testament. This article develops Christian teachings on cultured humans in the context and millennial era through the perspectives of theologians, and then explains how the thread relates to the theological documents of the Huria Kristen Batak Protestant (HKBP) church in particular. Through this article, concrete contextualization from a Christian perspective on cultured humans in the millennial era will be clearly broken down, especially in the pluralistic Indonesian context
Tawhid and Qur’anic Interpretation in Early 20th-Century Minangkabau: A Philological-Theological Study of Abdul Latif Syakur’s al-Tawḥīd (1882–1963)
The Islamic reform movement in early 20th-century Minangkabau, West Sumatra, evolved through three phases. The first phase involved intellectual engagement, followed by military conflict, and later, modernization through education. During the third phase, scholarly production increased significantly. However, reformist literature predominantly concentrated on debates about tariqa (religious order) and fiqh (jurisprudence). Substantive discourse on tawhid (oneness of God) was absent, which forms the foundation of aqidah (creed). This study explores Abdul Latif Syakur’s al-Tawhid manuscript (1882–1963) to explore this underexamined aspect of Islamic theological discourse. Employing an integrative qualitative approach (philological-theological and historical analysis), the research explores three aspects: (1) Syakur’s construct of integrative tawhid, which synthesizes rubūbiyyah (lordship), ulūhiyyah (godship), and asmā’ wa ṣifāt (divine names and attributes); (2) his critique of shirk (associating partners with God) in both its jahiliyyah (pagan-ritualistic) and modern (secular-materialistic) forms; and (3) the role of ikhlas (sincere devotion) as a bridge between tawhidand social praxis. The findings show Syakur presents a non-polemical approach, integrating Minangkabau\u27s local values (adat basandi syarak, or Sharia-based tradition) with Islamic doctrine. He also critiques the tendency to reduce tawhid to ritual formalism or a strict separation between religion and state. His concept of modern shirk provides valuable insights into current challenges, such as materialism and environmental issues. By integrating education and literacy at an institution informally known as Surau Si Camin, Syakur contributed to a holistic reform that emphasized the unity of aqidah, ethics, and social responsibility. This study affirms the relevance of integrative tawhid as a framework for conflict resolution and interfaith dialogue in pluralistic societies while revitalizing the intellectual legacy of Islam in the Nusantara region (the Malay-Indonesian archipelago)
The Phenomenon of Bugis Tafsir on Islamization in Eastern Indonesia
This article examines the phenomenon of Bugis tafsir, both written and oral, produced by the As\u27adiyah ulama during the Islamization of Eastern Indonesia. As’adiyah, the oldest pesantren in the region, played a crucial role in the dissemination and teaching of Islam. Within this process of Islamization, Bugis tafsir emerges as a significant subject of study, as tafsir was foundational to the establishment of this pesantren. This is exemplified by the Bugis tafsir Tafsir Surah Amma Bil-Lughah Al-Buqisiyyah by AGH. Muhammad As’ad Al-Bugisy, the founder of As’adiyah. Furthermore, Bugis tafsir has been developed in various forms by As\u27adiyah scholars, initiated by the early students of the pesantren’s founder. This article argues that local tafsir is not only part of the intellectual heritage of pesantren but also plays a vital role in shaping pesantren traditions. This study employs a phenomenological-historical approach, combining literature review and fieldwork. Its findings indicate that the production of Bugis tafsir is essential for the promotion and transmission of Islam in Eastern Indonesia through Qur\u27anic interpretation that engages with contemporary contexts. This role is particularly evident in three key aspects: (1) culturally rooted da\u27wah (religious outreach), (2) the preservation of intellectual and cultural heritage through interpretation, and (3) the safeguarding of the distinctiveness of pesantren and Bugis culture. These three primary functions highlight the importance of employing local languages in the process of Islamization through interpretation—especially within the cultural framework of the interpreter, particularly when the interpreter is a pesantren ulama
Framing Ayat-Ayat Pernikahan Dalam Podcast The Sungkars: Analisis Tren Marriage Is Scary Di Era Digital
Legal Reconstruction of Marriage Dispensations in Indonesia through a Theo-Juridical Approach in the Perspective of the Qur\u27an
The Legal Reconstruction of Marriage Dispensation in Indonesia through a Theo-Juridical Approach in the Perspective of the Qur’an aims to re-examine the practice of underage marriage within the context of Islamic law, particularly from the perspective of the Qur’an, and to recommend a form of legal reconstruction within the Indonesian legal system. Child marriage remains a persistent legal and social phenomenon across various regions in Indonesia, despite the revision of the minimum marriageable age through Law Number 16 of 2019. A legal loophole in the form of marriage dispensation, as stated in Article 7 paragraph (2), creates room for practices that contradict the principles of child protection. This study employs a normative-juridical method and thematic (maudhū‘i) interpretation of Qur’anic verses related to marriage, family responsibility, and child protection. The findings indicate that the Qur’an emphasizes not only biological readiness but also intellectual maturity (rushd) as an ideal requirement for marriage. The practice of marriage dispensation is considered inconsistent with maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, particularly in the aspects of protecting life, intellect, lineage, and the dignity of children. This paper recommends legal reconstruction that includes statutory reform, strengthening of law enforcement structures, and transformation of legal culture in society based on Qur’anic values
