مسوّغات التأسيس وطبيعة الدور لعلم الكلام الجديد: قراءة في أعمال أهمّ منظّريه: Justifications for the Establishment and the Nature of the Role of the New ‘Ilm al-Kalām
‘Ilm al-Kalām occupies a central position in the landscape of Islamic thought, as it is considered a practical application of its method of reasoning. Its stagnation can significantly impact other closely related branches of science, potentially leading to the decline and eventual obsolescence of its role, transforming it into a historical rather than an active field of study. This study aims to explore the views of some contemporary thinkers regarding the deficiencies of classical Kalām in addressing the demands of the modern era, and to examine the legitimacy of renewing this discipline, the rationale behind its establishment, as well as the aspects of its evolution and the nature of its new role. The research employs descriptive, analytical, and historical methodologies, gathering data and information from the works of Mutakallimūn and relevant thinkers. The study’s primary conclusion is that ‘Ilm al-Kalām is in crisis due to methodological deficiencies and issues, causing it to lose its relevance in meeting contemporary demands. Therefore, a comprehensive renewal of its entire system of knowledge is necessary, incorporating modern humanities disciplines such as hermeneutics, semiotics, anthropology, sociology, and others.
Decolonizing Javanese-Islamic Identity in the Discourses of Contemporary Indonesian Islamic Studies
This article discusses the phenomenon of decolonization of Islamic studies as a continuation of postcolonial critical projects that are widespread in various areas of study. In particular, this paper wants to answer two main questions: (1) the background and foundations of decolonization of Islamic studies and (2) its struggle in Indonesian Islamic discourse by focusing on the issue of Javanese-Islamic identity. By analyzing relevant data, this paper concludes that decolonization was motivated by scientists’ anxiety over the impact of colonialism in the academic-scientific area, which formed an oppressive cultural construction. Decolonization seeks to go beyond the postcolonial project, which, at a certain point, is still shadowed by the ideas of Western figures. The epistemological basis of decolonization is a critical approach in the study of religion in general, and it also involves political factors of knowledge in one of its dimensions. In Javanese-Islamic identity, decolonization emphasizes the close intertwining between Javaneseness and Islam, which tend to be separated in colonial studies
Factor Analysis of The Change in Attitude of Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP) Towards Pt Toba Pulp Lestari (TPL) in Environmental Sustainability
This research examines the complex relationship regarding environmental sustainability between Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP) and PT Toba Pulp Lestari (TPL). The history of deforestation and community displacement by TPL leads to the engagement of HKBP in social movements, resulting in environmental advocacy. Despite TPL’s promise to shift to sustainable practices, TPL resumes deforestation and triggers renewed resistance. Previous studies focus on the impacts of TPL, leaving a gap in understanding the role of HKBP. Through thematic analysis and data triangulation, this research uncovers the environmental irresponsibility of TPL, driven by HKBP’s internal and external gains and challenges in promoting sustainability. The insights obtained explain how religious institutions address ecological issues amidst governance dynamics and highlight the need for such understanding in conservation efforts
Balinese Muslim Women’s Cultural Identity in the Context of Ajeg Bali
This research explores the negotiations carried out by Balinese Muslim women in Candikuning and Sinduwati in articulating their religious and cultural identities. The problems that arise in the study are related to stereotypes about being a Balinese Muslim, the origin of the land of birth, and the issue of secularism. Ajeg Bali, as a Balinese regional government regulation, presents a duality of interpretation of religious practices between Islam and Hinduism as social identities; for Balinese Islamic women, religious attributes such as the hijab are limited through the excessive practice of Ajeg Bali. Meanwhile, for those who adhere to Hinduism, religious practices are emphasized as an identity that is demonstrated and integrated into everyday life. Articulating identity through the legitimacy of local authorities strengthens Balinese identity. Yet, it is a challenge that Balinese Muslim women must manage, mainly to minimize cultural conflict. Marvasti’s ethnographic method is used with Fatima Mernissi’s perspective to elaborate on the identity of Islamic women. The research results show Balinese Islamic women’s negotiations are practiced through language and clothing in the Ajeg Bali practice. Then, the authors argue that cultural hybridity is demonstrated through Balinese dance arts and has combined with Islamic and Balinese aesthetics by strengthening the discourse of being Balinese Islamic Women. Hence, Islamic religious practices need to be formulated with the adoption of Balinese culture to enhance and maintain Balinese Islamic identity without neglecting the value of being Muslim
Raden Ayu Dewi Nawangsih’s Feminist Values in Kudus’ Oral Tradition Through Ethnomythology Study
The view of feminism is always related to the position and existence of women in various sectors that demand equality with men’s position. Feminism seeks to break down the patriarchal culture which is deeply rooted in Indonesia. This view even existed long before Raden Ayu Dewi Nawangsih was born as the daughter of a Sunan. This study aims to analyse the values of feminism in the oral tradition of Raden Ayu Dewi Nawangsih, which developed in the Kudus community. The methodological approach used is descriptive qualitative, using literature and field studies. At the same time, the theoretical approach used is the Levis-Strauss structural analysis. The research data is in the form of myths that contain feminist values. The method used in this research is the proficient method, literature study, and documentation. At the same time, the data analysis method consists of four stages: data transcription, data reduction (using Levi-Strauss structural theory), data interpretation, and conclusions. Based on the results of the analysis, two types of feminist values were found in the character Raden Ayu Dewi Nawangsih: personal power and freedom to choose a partner. This significant finding can be used to interpret feminism values via ethno-mythology perspective combining with structuralism approach. This interdisciplinary study would be essential to see the feminism values from oral tradition which is commonly categorized as a literary product
Reexamining the Credibility of the Joseph Schacht Concept of Sanad Hadith: Menguji Kembali Kredibilitas Konsep Joseph Schacht terhadap Sanad Hadis
Joseph Schacht, through the book The Muhammadan Jurisprudence, raises a criticism of sanad which considers that hadith did not start from the Prophet, but from tabi\u27in. It\u27s just that Schacht\u27s concept is considered weak because he is inconsistent and forgets a lot of data and important aspects in the study of hadith. This article appears as the author\u27s attempt to explain the concepts promoted by Schacht and also some of the problems carried out by Schacht. With the help of the descriptive-analytical method combined with a comparison of experts\u27 arguments as a medium of analysis, it can be seen how gaps emerge in Schacht\u27s attitude. The results of the analysis explain that the Schacht controversy is related to; first, Schacht\u27s rejection of the hadith which is not in line with the data of the companions which are part of the hadith; secondly, the theory built by Schacht can be said to be very weak, because much of the data found refutes Schacht\u27s hypothesis; third, there is subjectivity in the use of data and analysis results; and fourth, Schacht, who is known as an expert in Islamic law, should study hadith, but he does not believe that hadith comes from the Prophet
Edutainment in Qur\u27an Publishing: Integrating Learning Theories and Entertainment in Indonesian Mushaf
The publication of Qur\u27an in Indonesia reflects the direction of the publishing industry, which emphasizes products that are not only informative but also interesting and entertaining for readers. This phenomenon was triggered by a response to society\u27s need for access to additional, more complete information. However, innovations like color tajwid have sparked controversy. Further research into the publication of the Qur\u27an in Indonesia is necessary to fully understand its impact. This study, employing the concept of edutainment, examines how Al-Qur\u27an manuscripts in Indonesia integrate learning theories and edutainment approaches. Utilizing analytical descriptive methods alongside philosophical-speculative and phenomenological approaches, fifteen manuscripts were analyzed. These manuscripts effectively meet readers\u27 needs while incorporating educational theories and edutainment strategies. Additionally, there is an emphasis on technological innovation, particularly in visual learning methods that utilize both technological and non-technological features. Despite these advancements, the teacher\u27s role remains crucial in promoting independent learning, especially within the context of Qur\u27an study
The Origin of Esotericism: An Analysis of the Ismaili Esoteric Approach to Qur’anic Interpretation
This study examines the Ismaili method of interpreting Qur’anic verses, focusing on their esoteric hermeneutics. The Quran serves as a fundamental legislative source for various theological factions, each seeking to substantiate their claims by referencing its verses. It also stands as a principal source for muhaddithin, fuqahā (jurisprudents), and others, contributing to the emergence of tafsir, a discipline aimed at elucidating the Quran\u27s meanings and intentions. Consequently, different schools of interpretation, or tafsir, have developed over time. One strand of interpretation adheres to the literal meaning of the text, known as Zāhir, while another explores mystical or esoteric meanings, termed Bātin, occasionally without strong support from Arabic language or Qur’anic and Hadith evidence. Among Shiite sects, the Ismailis distinguish themselves as one of the most enduring, recognizing Ismail bin Ja\u27far al-Sādiq as their Imam and establishing influential states in Islamic history, such as the Qarmatian state in Bahrain (899–1077) and the Fatimid Caliphate in North Africa (909/1171). To thoroughly investigate this subject, a qualitative research approach is proposed. Given the historical and theological nature of the topic, qualitative methods, such as textual analysis and historical research, facilitate a comprehensive exploration and interpretation of complex phenomena. The findings of this research indicate that Ismailism has heavily relied on the esoteric interpretation of Qur’anic verses since its inception, aligning with Ismaili belief systems, with Qur’anic verses assuming a more significant role than Hadith in their doctrinal framework. The essence of this article lies in delving into the Ismaili approach to esoteric hermeneutics, predominantly drawing from the sect\u27s primary sources
Paradigm Shifts in Gender Narratives of Tafsīr al-Ibrīz through Oral Exegesis on Youtube
This article examines the book Tafsīr al-Ibrīz, written by KH Bisri Mustofa, a prominent Javanese exegesis. The book has been re-read and interpreted orally by his son, Gus Mus (KH Ahmad Mustofa Bisri), on his YouTube channel. This study highlights a new tradition in the digital era where Qur\u27anic exegesis is transmitted and transformed through both written texts and oral interpretations. This research employs a qualitative approach, using primary data from the official YouTube Channel of Gus Mus and secondary data from relevant scholarly literature. Document analysis and descriptive-analytic methods reveal a significant paradigm shift between the written and oral exegesis. Specifically, gender issues such as polygamy and women\u27s leadership, which are presented with a gender-biased perspective in the written Tafsīr al-Ibrīz, are reinterpreted by Gus Mus with a focus on gender equality. This transformation is influenced by the socio-cultural context, Gus Mus\u27s educational background, and the changing audience of the oral exegesis. The study incorporates gender equality theory, highlighting forms of gender inequality like marginalization, subordination, stereotyping, violence, and double burden. The findings suggest that Gus Mus\u27s oral exegesis reflects an egalitarian interpretation, contrasting with the traditional views in Tafsīr al-Ibrīz, thus promoting fair treatment for both women and men. This research contributes to the discourse on gender and Qur\u27anic exegesis by demonstrating the dynamic nature of oral interpretation in the Indonesian pesantren context and its impact on advancing gender equality in Islamic thought
Dari Esoteris ke Literal: Penafsiran ar-Rāzī terhadap Huruf Muqatṭa\u27ah dalam al-Qur\u27an
Discussions about the muqatṭa\u27ah letters in the Qur’an frequently exhibit a historical bias, focusing predominantly on their linguistic attributes rather than their symbolic or contextual significance. Consequently, many pre-modern mufassirsoften neglect the functional role these letter combinations play, as well as the importance of historical and symbolic contexts in their interpretation. This research seeks to investigate how ar-Rāzī, a prominent pre-modern mufassir, employed context as a key element in interpreting the muqatṭa\u27ah letters. To achieve this, the study adopts Norman Fairclough\u27s critical discourse analysis framework, which facilitates an examination of the complex discourse within Mafātiḥ al-Ghaib. The study\u27s findings present two primary conclusions. Firstly, ar-Rāzī uses the association between the muqatṭa\u27ah letters and the subsequent words to establish five interpretative trends: as an indicator of the book, a symbol of the revelation process, a demonstrative word (ism isyārah), a pronoun (ism ḍāmir), and a symbol of the events represented in the text. This method reinforces the argument that the Qur\u27anic verses beginning with muqatṭa\u27ah letters underline the identity of the Qur\u27an as a revelation. Secondly, ar-Rāzī employs an intertextual approach, integrating his interpretations with the historical and cognitive discourse of his era, particularly through the lens of Asy\u27ariyah theology, which he embraced. By doing so, ar-Rāzī merges objective elements, such as grammatical functions, with subjective components, focusing on divine authority in understanding revelation. This dual approach allows ar-Rāzī to present an interpretation of the muqatṭa\u27ah letters that encompasses both esoteric and literal aspects, portraying the Qur\u27an as a text that is rich in both symbolic and historical meaning
