    Expounding Al-Bukhārī’s Theological Debates on Hadith Pertaining to Bayt Al-Maqdis from His Tarājim Abwāb

    Some researchers claim that Muslim scholars do not emphasize the importance of Bayt al-Maqdis as strongly as they do upon the two holy cities of Islam, Makkah and Madinah. Even when they do, their writings are mixed with weak and forged narrations. Additionally, their efforts aimed to strengthen the political position of certain caliphs. In the current regional situation, some Muslims radically and literally interpret the hadith out of context to support the liberation of Bayt al-Maqdis. They believe that participating in jihadi group is a noble effort, even if it involves suicide bombings. Based on these issues, this article explores the efforts of scholars in hadith scholarship related to Bayt al-Maqdis. Specifically, it examines the perspective of a prominent hadith scholar, Imam al-Bukhari, in his initiative to compile hadiths, which he placed in different chapters of his book al-Jāmi’ al-Ṣaḥīḥ. This study employs a library research approach involving content analysis. The findings of this study reveal that numerous Muslim scholars have contributed significantly to Islamic scholarship in Bayt al-Maqdis through writing and the dissemination of knowledge. Specifically, they compiled hadiths about Bayt al-Maqdis in certain books and chapters. Imam al-Bukhari documented 12 narrations related to Bayt al-Maqdis in 9 books and 13 chapters. This study selected one hadith that is almost identical but is placed under four different chapters. This illustrates the unique way a single narration, both textually and contextually, can explain the significance and position of Bayt al-Maqdis in Islam from diverse and interesting perspectives. This study recommends continuing the exploration of hadiths related to Bayt al-Maqdis to examine various other forms of Tarājim. This will help the Muslim community, in particular, to understand the hadith texts comprehensively while simultaneously refuting the argument that Islam neglects this third holy city

    Non-Muslim Perceptions of Halal Muslim Life Style in Manado City and Its Influence on Social Distance

    Halal food/drink is food or beverages that do not contain haram food or drink ingredients (especially pork and khamr) according to Islamic law. In Indonesia, consuming halal food is one of the essensial identities of a Muslim, which has recently been strengthened through public regulations. This strengthening of religious identity, especially among the Muslim minority, might create social distance characterized by Muslims’ limiting or avoiding contact with non-Muslims. While previous research found social distance exists in Muslim minorities towards non-Muslims, this research explains the lack of social distance among majority non-Muslims towards minority Muslims. Using mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, through survey, observations and interviews with 50 respondents in Manado, this research found that social distance towards the “strengthening” of halal identity among Muslims is hardly seen among Christian respondents. The fact that Muslims have restrictions on consuming non-halal food, while Minahasa Christians do not have such equal restrictions on consuming Muslim food, confirms the quantitative data. In contrast to Muslims, who have restrictions on consuming non-halal food, Minahasan Christians do not have restrictions on consuming Muslim (halal) food. This study strengthens the argument that the “halal” identity creates social distance in Manado society among Muslims towards others and not vice versa

    Social Identity of English Lecturers at Islamic Universities in Central Java in Sociological Discourse

    This study examines the social identity inherent in English lecturers in Islamic universities in Central Java. This research aims to reveal how the correlation between social identity and work professionalism. The research method used is narrative inquiry. This method focuses on the narrator\u27s story based on his life experience. The results showed that social identity cannot be separated from one\u27s self-identity. Self-identity can be a representation of where a person comes from and participation in certain groups. The social identity of lecturers can be seen in the symbols attached to themselves, such as the way they dress, speaking style, religious practices, and others. English lecturers in Islamic universities are required to integrate Islamic values with learning, research, and community service. Social identity contributes to the professional development of lecturers to create a conducive learning environment

    Politics and Pluralism: Analyzing State Official Tafsir and Interfaith Discourse in Indonesia

    This research aims to explore the Tafsir produced by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, specifically focusing on the potential politicization of the Qur’an, particularly in the narrative of inter-religious relationships in Indonesia. The study underscores the crucial role of Tafsir in shaping societal perceptions of religious pluralism in the country. In this context, a significant question arises concerning the extent to which the interpretations generated through the state\u27s political mechanisms contribute to the discourse on religious pluralism. To address this inquiry, the critical discourse analysis approach by Norman Fairclough is employed, encompassing three dimensions: text analysis, discursive practices, and social practices. The analysis focuses on the Tafsir produced in 1980 by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs titled "Al-Qur’an dan Tafsirnya." The research reveals that the narrative regarding inter-religious relationships in Indonesia within the official Tafsir is not solely connected to the state\u27s role through the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia. It is also influenced by various factors such as the socio-religious context and the role of Mufassir (mufasir). This situation is reflected through three patterns of state affirmation: Affirmative-Accommodative, Affirmative-Permissive, and Affirmative-Disruptive. The substantial contribution of this research lies in enhancing the understanding of the intricate relationship between religious exegesis, state politics, and radicalism in Indonesia. This opens avenues for further reflection and debate in scholarly literature, particularly regarding the impact of state involvement in the Qur’an interpretation process on the narrative of inter-religious relationships in Indonesia

    The Evolution of \u27Kafir\u27 in the Qur’an: A Diachronic Study on the Socio-Political Influences Shaping Its Meaning

    The term \u27kafir\u27 in the Qur’an possesses a complex meaning, which is one of the most pivotal elements of the Qur’an, influenced by the context from the time of revelation to the practice of the interpretive community. Considering the element of time, the meaning of \u27kafir\u27 has changed over the years; it is dynamic and dependent on temporal, spatial, and socio-political contexts. This paper explores the historical-critical changes in the meaning of \u27kafir\u27 over time, known as a diachronic study, by considering the socio-political backgrounds accompanying these emerging meanings. The objective of this paper is to foster a more comprehensive understanding of \u27kafir\u27 as a dynamic and discursive term throughout history. The findings indicate that with the continuous evolution of context, different understandings and meanings have surfaced, rendering the meaning of \u27kafir\u27 fluid. The term dates back to pre-Islamic times and was later used in the Qur’an within a new conceptual framework. Within the interpretive community, political divisions in the first centuries of Islam contributed to diverse meanings of \u27kafir.\u27 In the modern era, the predominance of the nation-state concept has brought the term \u27kafir\u27 into debates concerning the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims and their status within the nation-state. This type of historically grounded diachronic study helps to avoid essentialism in the study of historically significant terms and concepts related to Muslim societies, which are still often examined in popular academic discourse

    This research discusses the verses of the Koran in the practice of dhikr at the Tahfidz al-Qur\u27an Ar-Roudhoh Putri Botoran Tulungagung Islamic Boarding School. The purpose of this study is to briefly describe the history and procession of the practice of al-Ma\u27tsurat so that the practitioners know the meaning of amaliah dhikr of the verses of the Koran. The research was conducted using qualitative descriptive methods and social theory of knowledge by Karl Mannheim, namely objective, expressive and documentary. The conclusion resulting from this research is that the amaliah tradition of dzikir al-Ma\u27tsurat at the Tahfidz al-Qur\u27an Ar-Roudhoh Putri Botoran Timur Tulungagung Islamic Boarding School is carried out at two times, namely, after the morning prayer and after the maghrib prayer in congregation and led by one one on schedule. The discussion regarding the profile of the Islamic boarding school, the history of the beginning of the practice and what the procession is then the meaning obtained so as to produce research that is in accordance with the formulation of the problem. At the core of the discussion related to meaning there is an objective meaning, it is found that there is a compulsion on new students and a sense of ta\u27dzim in implementing it on old students. Then in terms of expressive meaning, from some of the interviewees who have been interviewed, in general, they feel calm in their hearts and minds so that they are more focused on worship. While the meaning of the documentary, the practice that is part of the activities of the pondok and continues to this day, is unknowingly included in the routine of the boarding school. Keywords: Dhikr Al-Ma\u27tsurat, Living Qur\u27an, Karl Mannheim.   Penelitian kali ini membahas mengenai ayat-ayat Al-Qur’an dalam amaliah dzikir di Pondok Pesantren Tahfidz al-Qur’an Ar-Roudhoh Putri Botoran Tulungagung. Tujuan dari penelitian terhadap fenomena sosial tersebut untuk mendeskripsikan sekilas sejarah dan prosesi pengamalan al-Ma’tsurat sehingga mengetahui makna yang terkandung dalam amaliah dzikir ayat-ayat al-Qur’an bagi para pengamalnya. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian seperti berikut; deskriptif kualitatif dan teori sosial pengetahuan oleh Karl Mannheim, yaitu objektif, ekspresif, dan dokumenter. Kesimpulan yang dihasilkan dari penelitian ini bahwa, tradisi amaliah dzikir al-Ma’tsurat di Pondok Pesantren Tahfidz al-Qur’an Ar-Roudhoh Putri Botoran Timur Tulungagung dilaksanakan setelah melaksanakan shalat subuh dan shalat maghrib secara berjamaah dan dipimpin salah seorang sesuai jadwalnya. Pembahasan mengenai bagaimana profil dari pondok pesantren, sejarah awal mula diadakannnya kegiatan amalan tersebut dan apa saja prosesi kemudian makna yang didapatkan sehingga menghasilkan penelitian yang sesuai dengan rumusan masalah. Pada inti pembahasan terkait makna terdapat makna objektif, ditemukan adanya keterpaksaan pada santri baru dan rasa ta’dzim dalam melaksanakannya pada santri lama. Kemudian pada makna ekspresif, dari beberapa para narasumber yang telah diwawancara pada umumnya merasakan temtramnya hati dan fikiran sehingga lebih fokus dalam ibadah. Sedangkan makna dokumenter, amalan yang dijadikan bagian dari kegiatan pondok dan terus dijalannya hingga saat ini, tanpa disadari termasuk dalam rutinitas pondok.     KRITIK KUNTOWIJOYO TERHADAP ISLAMISASI ILMU

    As a form of response to the development of existing scientific paradigms, it is not uncommon for criticism to arise between each other. The development of the Islamization of science itself has given rise to criticism that the Islamization of science is only used as an instrument for the sterilization of modern science which is currently developing. So it has not yet emerged the true substance of Islam. In this research, researchers used qualitative research methods. This research is a type of library research, namely research whose object of study uses library data in the form of books, journals and articles as data sources. The results of the research entitled "Kuntowijoyo\u27s Criticism of the Islamization of Science" explain, among other things, the Islamization of Science as a response to the crisis in modern society which is caused by the large amount of science that has developed based on the West. The Islamization of science is also understood as a way to liberate Western assumptions attached to Islamic science which are then replaced with an Islamic perspective. For Kuntowijoyo, science has a revolutionary nature. When Islam is made into a science, it will also become a paradigm, from which the ability to make changes will emerge. Kuntowijoyo tries to make this knowledge something objective, so objective knowledge does not need to be Islamized. He made a breakthrough, namely "Islamic science". The Islamization of Science makes Muslims closed to methods that originate from outside. Keyword: critics; Kuntowijoyo; Islamization of Science   Sebagai bentuk respon dari berkembangnya paradigma ilmu yang ada, maka tidak jarang muncul kritik antar satu sama lain. Berkembangnya Islamisasi ilmu sendiri telah memunculkan suatu kritikan dimana Islamisasi ilmu hanya dipakai sebagai instrument untuk sterilisasi terhadap ilmu modern yang tengah berkembang. Sehingga belum memunculkan substansi Islam yang sebenarnya. Pada penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan metode penelitan kulaitatif. Penelitian ini termasuk jenis penelitian pustaka (library research), yakni penelitian yang obyek kajiannya menggunakan data pustaka berupa buku-buku, jurnal, dan artikel sebagai sumber datanya. Hasil dari penelitian yang berjudul “Kritik Kuntowijoyo Terhadap Islamisasi Ilmu” ini dijelaskan antaranya, Islamisasi Ilmu sebagai bentuk respon terhadap krisis di masyarakat modern yang diakibatkan karena banyaknya ilmu yang berkembang bertumpu pada Barat. Islamisasi Ilmu juga dipahami sebagai cara untuk membebaskan asumsi-asumsi Barat yang melekat pada ilmu pengetahuan Islam yang selanjutnya diganti dengan cara pandang Islam. Bagi Kuntowijoyo ilmu memiliki sifat revolusioner. Saat Islam dijadikan ilmu maka ia akan sekaligus menjadi paradigma dari situ akan timbul suatu kemampuan untuk membuat perubahan. Kuntowijoyo berusaha menjadikan ilmu tersebut sebagai sesuatu yang objektif, maka pengetahuan yang objektif tidak perlu diislamisasi. Ia membuat suatu terobosan yaitu “pengilmuan Islam”.     FILSAFAT MUHAMMAD ABID AL-JABIRI DALAM TELAAH EPISTEMOLOGI BURHANI SINERGI NALAR ISLAM

    This research aims to discuss the study of Muhammad Abid Al-Jabiri Philosophy in Epistemology (Burhani) Synergy of Islamic Reason. This research uses a qualitative approach and applies descriptive-analytical methods. Philosophy is Positioned as a formal object, the material object is Muhammad Abid Al-Jabiri and the context is Epistemology (Burhani) and Islamic Reason. The result and discussion in this research show that Muhammad Abid Al-Jabiri Philosophy through his throughts on Islamic Reason is embedded in Burhani’s epistemologi through his curiosity about the domination of science which is based on the use of reason as the main human ability to obtain knowledge using the method of deducation. Culture it self a cultural heritage, thought, religion, literature, art, philosophy, sufism and kalam that comes from the past. This research concludes that Muhammad Abid Al-Jabiri, Epistemology Burhani (Philosophy) is relevant to be used synergi Islamic Reason and understand of texts and implied and explicit meanings in reality cause and effect (asbabun nuzul) of Islamic reason traditions in the present so as to forget the traditions of the history. Keywords: Epistemology Burhani; Islamic Reason; Muhammad Abid Al-Jabiri; Phylosophy; Turath   Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membahas Telaah Filsafat Muhammad Abid Al-Jabiri dalam Epistemologi (Burhani) Sinergi Nalar Islam, Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif serta menerapkan metode deskriptif-analitis, Filsafat di posisikan sebagai objek formal, objek materialnya Muhammad Abid Al-Jabiri serta konteksnya Epistemologi (Burhani) dan Nalar Islam. Hasil dan pembahasan pada penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Filsafat Muhammad Abid Al-Jabiri melalui pemikirannya tentang Nalar Islam tertera pada Epistemologi Burhani melalui rasa ingin tahunya pada pendominasian ilmu pengetahuan yang didasari dengan penggunaan akal untuk kemampuan utama manusia memperoleh ilmu pengetahuan tersebut dengan metode deduksi. Kebudayaan sendiri merupakan suatu warisan budaya, pemikiran, agama, sastra, seni, filsafat, tasawwuf dan kalam yang hadir dari kita maupun orang lain, baik itu dekat dan jauh, menyertai kekinian kita yang datang dari masa lalu. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Epistemologi Burhani (Filsafat) Muhammad Abid Al-Jabiri relevan digunakan untuk mensinergikan Nalar Islam serta pemahaman akan teks dan makna yang tersirat serta tersurat dalam mengejawantahkan sebab-akibat (asbabun nuzul) tradisi nalar Islam pada masa sekarang hingga tidak melupakan tradisi masa lalu.     TOLERANSI DALAM SURAH AL-KAFIRUN: KOMPARASI TAFSIR AL-AZHAR DAN HAK DINI KUR’AN DILI

    This article presents the concept of tolerance using a comparative method from two commentators from different countries and similar historical contexts. Hamka and Hamdi were prominent mufassir and lived during the transition period. Both are related to government and contribute to the continuity of religious life in their respective countries. Surah al-Kafirun, which is a Makkiyah surah, has a strong message about tolerance and religious freedom. Hamka emphasized the importance of maintaining faith and rejecting compromise between monotheism and shirk and emphasized the need to build togetherness and maintain relations between religious communities without sacrificing faith. In the history of his life, Hamka showed a firm attitude towards religious beliefs, including his resignation from the Indonesian Ulema Council because he refused to withdraw the fatwa regarding wishing a Merry Christmas. On the other hand, Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır emphasized the importance of a gentle approach in da\u27wah and conveying the message of the Qur\u27an in a good way. His interpretation also reflects the context of the secularization of the Turkish Republic at that time. These two interpretations show differences in approach and historical context, but both agree that tolerance does not mean sacrificing one\u27s beliefs. This research provides in-depth insight into various perspectives in the tradition of interpreting the Koran and how the values of tolerance can be applied in various social and political contexts. Keywords: Religion Moderation, Sekularization, Takfir, Turks   Artikel ini mengemukakan konsep toleransi dengan metode komparatif dari dua mufassir dengan negara yang berbeda dan memiliki konteks historis yang serupa. Hamka dan Hamdi merupakan mufassir terkemuka dan hidup pada masa peralihan pemerintahan. Keduanya memiliki keterkaitan dengan pemerintahan dan berkontribusi dalam keberlangsungan kehidupan beragama di negara masing-masing. Surah al-Kafirun, yang merupakan surah Makkiyah, memiliki pesan kuat tentang toleransi dan kebebasan beragama. Hamka menekankan pentingnya menjaga akidah dan menolak kompromi antara tauhid dan syirik, serta menekankan perlunya membangun kebersamaan dan menjaga hubungan antar umat beragama tanpa mengorbankan keimanan. Dalam sejarah kehidupannya, Hamka menunjukkan sikap tegas terhadap keyakinan agama, termasuk pengunduran dirinya dari Majelis Ulama Indonesia karena menolak menarik fatwa tentang mengucapkan selamat Natal. Di sisi lain, Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır menekankan pentingnya pendekatan yang lembut dalam dakwah dan menyampaikan pesan al-Qur\u27an dengan cara yang baik. Tafsirnya juga mencerminkan konteks sekularisasi Republik Turki pada masa itu. Kedua tafsir ini menunjukkan perbedaan dalam pendekatan dan konteks historis, tetapi keduanya setuju bahwa toleransi tidak berarti mengorbankan keyakinan sendiri. Penelitian ini memberikan wawasan mendalam tentang berbagai perspektif dalam tradisi penafsiran al-Qur\u27an dan bagaimana nilai-nilai toleransi dapat diterapkan dalam berbagai konteks sosial dan politik.   Kata kunci: Moderasi Beragama, Sekularisasi, Takfir, Turk

    RESOLUSI KONFLIK DALAM ISLAMIC STUDIES: PERSPEKTIF HARMONISASI ANTAR UMAT BERAGAMA RICHARD C. MARTIN

    Disharmony among religious communities in the era of globalization has become a focal point for religious observers, as it often gives rise to complex issues in Europe, North America, and other parts of the world. This article will explore the importance of Islamic studies in understanding the complexity of relationships between Islam and other cultures and religions. It will utilize Richard C. Martin\u27s multidisciplinary approach to Islamic studies. The research method employed is qualitative-normative, focusing on literature review and the concepts of cross-cultural dialogue and inclusivity within the context of global religious diversity. The findings of the research indicate that Martin\u27s approach, which advocates for inclusivity and cross-cultural dialogue, is the best way to promote a deeper understanding of religions and to reduce global conflicts. Understanding the historical approach, phenomenological approach, theological approach, comparative religions approach, and structuralist approach is one of Martin\u27s methods to achieve an inclusive interpretation of religions broadly, especially Islam. Such an understanding can lead to better global peace and cooperation. Martin\u27s ideas offer profound insights into how Islamic studies can play a crucial role in building harmony among religious communities, particularly as a means of resolving conflicts through comparative methods. His approach underscores the need for a comprehensive understanding of the historical, social, and cultural contexts of religions to foster mutual respect and cooperation in a multicultural world. Keywords: Resolution, Conflict, Islamic Studies, Harmonization   Disharmoni antar umat beragama di era globalisasi menjadi sorotan para pemerhati agama karena sering kali melahirkan persoalan kompleks seperti di Eropa, Amerika Utara maupun di belahan dunia lainnya. Artikel ini akan mengulas pentingnya studi keislaman (islamic studies) dalam memahami kompleksitas hubungan antara Islam dengan budaya dan agama lain. Artikel ini akan menggunakan pemikiran Richard C. Martin sebagai pendekatan multidisipliner dalam Islamic studies. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif-normatif dengan mengkaji literatur Pustaka (liberary research) dan konsep dialog lintas budaya dan inklusivitas dalam konteks keberagaman religius global. Temuan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan Martin, yang menganjurkan inklusivitas dan dialog lintas budaya, adalah cara terbaik untuk mempromosikan pemahaman yang lebih dalam tentang agama-agama dan mengurangi konflik global. Memahami pendekatan historis, pendekatan fenomenologis, pendekatan teologis, pendekatan perbandingan agama, dan pendekatan strukturalis adalah salah satu metode Martin untuk mencapai interpretasi inklusif terhadap agama-agama secara luas, khususnya Islam. Pemahaman seperti ini dapat membawa kepada perdamaian dan kerja sama global yang lebih baik. Gagasan Martin menawarkan wawasan yang mendalam tentang bagaimana studi Islam dapat memainkan peran penting dalam membangun keharmonisan di antara umat beragama, terutama sebagai sarana untuk menyelesaikan konflik melalui metode komparatif. Pendekatannya menggarisbawahi perlunya pemahaman yang komprehensif mengenai konteks sejarah, sosial, dan budaya agama-agama untuk menumbuhkan rasa saling menghormati dan kerja sama dalam dunia yang Multi-kultural.
