Bridging the Methodological Gap: Emic and Etic Paradigms in Evolving the Living Hadith Studies: Menjembatani Kesenjangan Metodologis: Paradigma Emik dan Etik dalam Perkembanganan Studi Living Hadis
The study of living hadith, while demonstrating the advancement of hadith scholarship, nonetheless leaves considerable room for further development. Moreover, researchers\u27 awareness of the reality of hadith as a foundation for rituals still requires methodological strengthening, particularly concerning whether interpretations arise from the reception of practitioners within the tradition (emic) or from the researcher\u27s own analysis (etic). This article aims to explore more deeply the concepts of emic and etic in living hadith studies, as well as their application in this field of research. Concretely, two fundamental questions form the basis of this study: First, how are emic and etic constructed in living hadith research? Second, what are the patterns of distribution of emic and etic within the dynamics of living hadith studies? These questions are examined using a systematic literature review approach, with data sourced from Google Scholar using the keywords "living hadis," "living sunnah," and "living hadith." The study data were limited to journals accredited by Sinta or Scopus and published between 2021 and 2025. Through data exclusion, 37 relevant articles were identified. The findings reveal four patterns of engaging with hadith: emic (16 articles), etic (16 articles), emic-etic (4 articles), and traditions not based on hadith (one article). Furthermore, within the five-stage research framework proposed by Saifuddin Zuhri, an etic approach is applied in the analysis of practice, an emic approach in the examination of reception and text, and an etic approach in the study of transmission and transformation
The Integrative Model in Qur\u27anic Interpretation at UIN Sunan Kalijaga: A Contributory Analysis of the Ma\u27na-cum-Maghza and Maqasidi Approaches
This study examines the integrative model of Qur\u27anic interpretation developed at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, with a focus on the contributions of two contemporary approaches: ma\u27na-cum-maghza and maqasidi. These approaches represent scholarly efforts to merge textual meaning with contextual relevance in understanding the message of the Qur\u27an. The ma\u27na-cum-maghza approach emphasizes uncovering the deeper meanings behind the text, while the maqasidi approach centers on the universal objectives and values that sharia aims to realize. Through a literature review and analysis of academic works produced at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, this study demonstrates that the integrative model not only enriches tafsir methodology but also offers a more adaptive response to the challenges of the modern era. As such, this model makes a significant contribution to the development of a contextual, relevant, and transformative Qur\u27anic interpretation
The Problematic Use of Ḍa’īf Al-Ḥadīth: A Study of Ibn Ḥajar al-Asqalānī’s Thoughts and Practices in Bulūgh al-Marām: Problematika Penggunaan Hadis Dha\u27īf : Studi tentang Pemikiran dan Praktik Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani dalam Bulūgh al-Marām
Problems arising within society are often rooted in the uncritical acceptance and application of dha’if (weak) traditions, particularly in matters of worship. Interestingly, Ibn Ḥajar al-’Asqalānī, a renowned hadith scholar, extensively quotes various hadiths, including dha’if ones, in his seminal work Bulūgh al-Marām, a book focused on Islamic legal rulings that ideally should be based on authentic, hadith ṣaḥiḥ or ḥasan. This study examines Ibn Ḥajar’s perspective on utilizing hadith dha’if, guided by two central research questions. First, what are Ibn Hajar’s view and considerations in incorporating dha’if hadiths into Bulūgh al-Marām? Second, what is the position and validity of dha’if traditions within the broader discourse of Islamic jurisprudence? The study employs a descriptive-analytical method grounded in a literature review to address these questions. The findings reveal that Ibn Ḥajar permits the use of hadiths dha’if under specific conditions; the weakness must not be severe, the narration should align with established principles or stronger evidence, and it must not be definitively attributed to the Prophet. In Bulūgh al-Marām, hadith dha’if are not presented as primary legal sources but rather as supportive material to strengthen or clarify authentic reports. Moreover, the presence of hadith dha’if in his work shows a concrete effort to provide examples of the position and permissibility of using da\u27if traditions. Thus, people can be wiser in responding to any information, both general and prophetic traditions in the midst of religious life

The Rohingya refugee crisis is a critical issue in the realm of human rights and forced migration in Southeast Asia, demanding a comprehensive and context-sensitive policy response. This study examines how Indonesia’s refugee protection policies are influenced by the dynamics of political Islam, focusing on the challenges and opportunities in policy formulation and implementation. A qualitative approach was employed, using secondary data such as policy documents, reports from international organizations, and academic literature. The theoretical framework used is political Islam, which emphasizes principles of empathy, communal solidarity, and humanitarian responsibility in the context of a Muslim-majority country. The findings reveal that although Indonesia has not ratified the 1951 Refugee Convention, Islamic values—expressed through both state and non-state actors—encourage the development of morally responsive refugee policies, such as Presidential Regulation No. 125 of 2016. However, weak inter-agency coordination, limited resources, and the absence of long-term legal frameworks remain key obstacles in providing effective protection for Rohingya refugees.

This paper explores the role of digital media, which has evolved from its initial use in religious practices to creating new sacred spaces that influence the spiritual experiences and feelings of religious adherents. Furthermore, it demonstrates that digital media significantly supports the objectives of traditional religions. Using Mircea Eliade\u27s theory of hierophany, this study analyzes how digital media mediates sacred experiences by highlighting the dialectics between the sacred and the profane. A qualitative method based on literature analysis is employed to investigate the shift in the meaning of digital media from sacred to profane and back to sacred through the adoption of technologies such as the internet and artificial intelligence in religious practices. The findings reveal that digital media enriches religious identity in a more inclusive manner, forms fluid virtual communities while preserving spiritual values, and expands religious authority by integrating tradition and technological innovation. Digital hierophany introduces religious spaces that enable spiritual experiences to remain relevant and personal in modern contexts. Digital media not only supports traditional practices but also revolutionizes human relationships with the sacred, strengthens spiritual solidarity, and creates new integrations between sacredness and profane realities in the technological era.

Framing Religious Pluralism as Deviation: A Digital Hadith-Based Discourse of Salafism on Instagram
Digital transformation has changed the landscape of Islamic da\u27wah in Indonesia, including in the production and dissemination of exclusive religious discourse by Salafi groups. This study analyzes the Instagram account @ittiba_salaf, which consistently frames religious pluralism as a deviation from Islamic creed, by referring to verses of the Qur’an and hadith. This study uses Robert M. Entman\u27s framing analysis approach, which includes four main elements—problem definition, cause diagnosis, moral evaluation, and solution recommendation—combined with Maʿānī al-Ḥadīth analysis to reveal the ideological instruments underlying the use of hadith. The findings show that this account constructs pluralism as a theological and ideological threat, associated with Western liberalism and categorized as a form of kufr. This narrative represents theological reductionism that ignores the complexity of Indonesia’s pluralistic society. This study emphasizes that digital da\u27wah not only conveys religious messages, but also becomes an arena for contestation over the meaning and authority of Islam, requiring a moderate hermeneutical approach to bridge theological commitments with the reality of societal diversity
From Concept to Practice: The Reality of Religious Moderation in State Islamic Universities in Aceh
This study examines the implementation of Religious Moderation (Moderasi Beragama/MB) in State Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN) in Aceh, Indonesia, within the framework of national policy and local religious dynamics. Using empirical data and institutional analysis, the research identifies key structural and cultural factors affecting the success of this agenda. While the concept of moderation is compatible with Acehnese Islamic traditions, institutionalization remains limited due to its exclusion from strategic planning, inadequate funding, and varied reception among academic communities. UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh stands out for its more structured and sustained approach, supported by strong leadership and resource commitment. In contrast, other PTKINs show fragmented, ad hoc efforts shaped by institutional and financial constraints. The study finds that localized strategies—rooted in contextual theology, cultural practices, and credible religious authority—are more effective in embedding moderation values within academic settings. These findings underscore that successful implementation of religious moderation in higher education depends on integrating policy with institutional will and cultural engagement, allowing national agendas to resonate meaningfully within diverse local contexts
Abu Hayyân\u27s Interpretation of the Verses of Law (Study of the Verse of the Relationship between Husband and Wife in Verse Qs. Al-Baqarah [2]: 222)
This research examines Abu Hayyan\u27s methodology in the tafsir \u27al-Bahr al-Muhit,\u27 especially in interpreting QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 222, by comparing mutawatir and shādzdzah qirât. Abu Hayyan\u27s approach highlights the interaction between qirât and legal interpretation and compares it with other scholars to assess his contribution to Islamic jurisprudence. This study is qualitative research using descriptive-analytical methods. It analyses Abu Hayyan\u27s interpretation, especially in his work al-Bahr al-Muhit, by comparing the different interpretations of other scholars to gain a broader insight. This study concludes that Abu Hayyân succeeded in showing that qirât syâdzdzah can be used to interpret the Qur\u27an. Qirât shâdzdzah can be compromised with qirât mutawatir to provide a more holistic interpretation in the study of interpretation and Islamic jurisprudence
Educational Traditions of the Prophet’s Sports in the Formation of Physical and Mental Health: Hadis tentang Pendidikan Olahraga Nabi dalam Pembentukan Kesehatan Fisik dan Jiwa
Modern society\u27s awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle has brought new ideas not only limited to diet and sleep but also exercise. In this case, exercise is believed to be important in realizing physical and mental health. However, some groups limit the practice of exercise to archery, swimming, and horseback riding, as referred to the hadith delivered by the prophet. This study aims to analyze the concept of sports in the Prophetic traditions as a basis for developing a holistic sports education program, as well as to examine the permissibility of the Prophetic sports tradition through the contextualization of hadith in the modern era. Through a qualitative approach based on literature study, the author uses a collection of literature and relevant sources of information as research sources. In analyzing the data, the author uses the stages proposed by Miles & Huberman, namely data identification, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. From two questions; how is the contextualization of sports hadith in realizing physical and mental health, and how is the application of hadith about sports in the development of sports education programs, the results show that the concept of sports in the prophet\u27s traditions is not seen from the form of sports alone, such as swimming, archery and horse riding, but rather on the aspect of its purpose and usefulness. Philosophically, the purpose and benefits of sports education in children through the context of archery and horse riding during the Prophet\u27s time are more directed at the form of children\u27s education so that they become individuals who understand the goals and objectives of life, calmness, concentration, and strategies in achieving these goals, including mastery of modern technological means that support the ease of physical activity in facilitating towards every goal of life
The Living QS. Saba`: 13 among Javanese Moslem Sculptors
Every depiction of living creature is forbidden in Islam, whether in the form of paintings or statues. The prohibition that originates from the hadith has become an established doctrine in Islam, even then created a unique branch of art in Islam namely aniconism. However, there is a group of Muslim sculptors in the Prumpung Magelang area who still preserve their culture as sculptors without having to confront Islamic teachings either in the philosophical or practical domains. This study aims to examine and analyze the negotiations of Muslim sculptors in Prumpung Magelang regarding the doctrine of the prohibition of sculpting in Islam. By utilizing reception theory, this field research is located in the Prumpung Magelang area, with Muslim sculptors as the research subjects, and therefore primary data is obtained based on in-depth interviews with informants consisting of key figures in Muslim sculptors and those associated with them. This study found that Muslim sculptors were aware of the existence of the doctrine that prohibits carving statues in the form of living creatures in Islamic teachings, which only applies to statues that are converted into idols (used as objects of worship). Meanwhile, the statue making industry in the Prumpung Magelang area is not at all related to religious worship and certain beliefs, therefore it is permitted. This perspective is identical (linear) with the status of the existence of statues mentioned in the Qur\u27an, that their existence is permitted as long as they are not used as objects of worship as in QS. Saba`:13
