LOVE LANGUAGES OF GARY CHAPMAN IN THE ECCLESIASTICAL DOCUMENT NO. 100: AMORIS LAETITIA

    No full text
Amoris Laetitia is a document that explicitly discusses how to love in relationships and families, and another practical theory to prevent disharmony in relationships is the language of love, and this study aims to prove that the language of love has been adopted and serves as a practical guide in understanding the Catholic doctrine of love. Even in the Islamic view, the language of love claimed by secularists is the language of love in violation of the commands of Allah SWT, because love is considered a spiritual path that connects a person to Allah SWT. This study uses the qualitative approach to analyse through the theological and psychological approach. The result of this study is that each point of the love language by Gary Chapman is related to some of the points in Amoris Laetitia\u27s love letter. Thus, Amoris Laetitia becomes a practical spiritual guide and the Language of Love becomes a practical framework for families to express love more effectively, according to the teachings of the Church. Based on this research, it is hoped that further research can be studied in terms of phenomenology. Keyword: Amoris Laetitia; Gary Chapman; Love Language.

Weeping Toughs and Pretty Militants: Living Islam and Negotiating Gender in a Muslim Militia (Banser)

    No full text
This paper explores the intersection of gender, religion, and militarism within Banser, the paramilitary wing of GP Ansor, affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama—the world’s largest Muslim organization. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, it examines how masculinity and femininity are negotiated in this male-dominated but increasingly gender-diverse organization. Through a ritual analysis of training camps and ceremonies, the paper unpacks emotional expression, moral formation, and the performance of Islamic piety in ways that challenge both normative gender roles and essentialist conceptions of Islam. Building on Talal Asad’s notion of Islam as a discursive tradition, the study develops a “linguistic model” to conceptualize Islamic variation as analogous to dialects—local articulations of a shared religious grammar. This model allows for an analysis of Javanese Islam as one such dialect, shaped by mysticism, hierarchy, and local understandings of gender. The paper also traces how militarized masculinity, inherited from Indonesia’s nationalist and New Order legacies, intersects with traditional and Islamic ideals, producing hybrid forms of moral militarism. Finally, it examines how female participation—through structures like Denwatser (Detasment Wanita Banser) and Garfa (Garuda Fatayat)—both challenges and is contained by existing gender hierarchies. Banser thus emerges as a site where lived Islam is actively negotiated through embodied practice, emotional intensity, and the disciplining of gendered selves. This study contributes to the anthropology of Islam by offering a grounded, theoretically rich account of how Islam is lived and contested in contemporary Indonesia

Between Central and Peripheral: The Views of amina wadud and Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir on Islamic Feminism

    No full text
This article discusses two feminist thinkers, amina wadud and Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir, who articulate similar ideas of Islamic feminism through different approaches. wadud represents thinkers who live in the ‘central’ environment of feminist discourse, while Faqih indicates how ‘peripheral’ currents creatively adopt and adapt such discourse. This article argues that differences in intellectual formation and socio-cultural background strongly shape how each engages the Qurʾān, which in turn affects their respective attitudes toward classical traditions, particularly tafsir and uṣūl al-fiqh. This article discusses how their hermeneutical frameworks interpret Qur’anic gender verses, where their similarities and differences lie in their approaches to tafsir, both in terms of methodology and exegetical outcomes, and especially how they resist, receive, and reconfigure the classical tradition. Ultimately, this study shows that wadud, situated within the ‘central’ domain of feminist theory and influenced by secular-liberal paradigms, tends toward a deconstructive posture that challenges classical traditions. In contrast, Faqih, who was educated in traditional academia and lives in a ‘peripheral’ context, while inspired and influenced by wadud, adapts feminist ideas in ways that are more appreciative of the classical intellectual heritage.

The Relevance of Thematic Hadith Studies of al-Ardh to The Problems of Land Eco-Theology in The Modern Era : Relevansi Kajian Hadis Tematik al-Ardh terhadap Problematika Eco-Teologi Tanah di Era Modern

    No full text
In the last few decades, serious land issues have emerged, such as land degradation, pollution, land scarcity, and ownership conflicts. Departing from this reality, it is important to examine in depth the concept of land utilization and maintenance, because there has been a shift in the function of land from a medium of production to an economic object. On this basis, two problem formulations are proposed as the starting point of the research. First, how is land discussed in the Prophetic traditions? Second, how is the Prophet\u27s guidance related to the maintenance and utilization of land. Both questions will be approached using a qualitative-descriptive method with a library research approach, namely reading and comparing several references related to the study. The results showed that the study of the term al-ardh in the text of the prophetic traditions led to two findings. First, the philosophical aspect in the form of human attitudes towards land. Second, the technical aspects include the priority of land ownership, land utilization methods, and various functions of land which include theological, ecological, social, and economic functions

Rethinking Gender Justice in the Quran: A Critical Exploration of Muslim Feminist Perspectives

Discussions on men and women in Islam involve three major schools of thought: classical Muslim scholars, secular feminists, and Muslim feminists. While all aim to uphold women’s dignity, they diverge in their interpretations. Classical Muslim scholars emphasize justice but do not necessarily advocate absolute equality between men and women, whereas secular and Muslim feminists argue for full equality in rights and responsibilities as a form of just treatment. In particular, Muslim feminists engage in Quranic reinterpretation to uncover gender justice rooted in equality. This paper examines how Muslim feminists construct their arguments in Quranic reinterpretation, critiques the logic underlying their exegetical approach, and explores a Quranic perspective on gender justice that is both “meaningful” and contextually relevant to contemporary society. To achieve this, the study employs a critical-appreciative approach, integrating critical discourse analysis and maqasidic interpretation to analyze these three aspects. The findings highlight three key points: first, the efforts of Muslim feminists in advocating for women’s fundamental rights deserve recognition; second, their exegetical reasoning requires scrutiny, as it tends to shift from social analysis to ideological assertion; and third, the Quran presents a concept of gender justice that is dynamic and adaptable to diverse contemporary contexts. Justice in Islam does not always equate to equality; rather, it can manifest as proportional rights and responsibilities that maintain social balance and harmony. Thus, gender justice can be achieved through differentiation, provided it upholds fairness within the given context. This study bridges feminist and traditional Islamic scholarship by critically assessing Muslim feminist exegesis and proposing a contextualized framework for Quranic gender justice

Negotiating Living Hadith in Public Spaces: The Case of Salafi Muslimah Religious Study Groups in Yogyakarta

This study examines how Salafi Muslimah in Yogyakarta negotiate the implementation of Living Hadith in public spaces, particularly in relation to gender roles. Using a qualitative case study approach, it analyzes interpretations of hadith concerning women\u27s obedience to their husbands, hijab, and religious participation. Data were collected through six months of participant observation and in-depth interviews with twelve informants from four universities, whose identities were anonymized to ensure privacy. Methodological rigor was maintained through triangulation, member checking, and peer debriefing to enhance the study\u27s validity. Data analysis was conducted using thematic coding. The findings indicate that many Salafi Muslimah participants tend to adopt a literal and conservative interpretation of hadith. However, instances of negotiation were also observed, reflecting internal discourse within the community. These results contribute to the broader discourse on how Muslim women engage with religious teachings in their daily lives, particularly within the Salafi movement, which is noted for its strict adherence to traditional religious texts. Despite its significant contributions, this study is limited by its narrow geographical focus and reliance on qualitative methods, which may not fully capture the diversity of interpretations across different Salafi communities. Future research should expand the geographical scope and adopt mixed-method approaches to provide a more comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon

Fiqh of Biotechnology: Reinterpreting Qur\u27anic Verses on the Impurity of Pigs and Its Implications for the Halal Status of Vaccines

The use of pig-derived ingredients in vaccine production, such as trypsin enzyme and gelatin, has sparked controversy among Muslims. This issue stems from the fiqh understanding of the impurity (najāsah) of pigs as stipulated in the Qur\u27an and Hadith through Qur\u27anic interpretation. This study aims to reinterpret Qur\u27anic verses and Hadith on the impurity of pigs within the framework of Fiqh of Biotechnology, a novel approach integrating Islamic jurisprudence and biotechnology. This research employs a qualitative method based on library research, analyzing Qur\u27anic verses, Hadith, classical and contemporary tafsir, fatwas of Islamic scholars, and relevant biotechnology literature. The findings reveal that there are six Qur\u27anic verses and at least three Prophetic Hadiths declaring the prohibition of pigs, yet interpretations among scholars vary. From a biotechnological perspective, the trypsin enzyme used in the cell culture stage of vaccine production is entirely removed through filtration and purification processes, rendering it pure. Meanwhile, pig-derived gelatin undergoes significant transformation during vaccine production, which, according to the concept of istihalah, has the potential to alter its legal status to halal. By integrating the fiqh principles of thaharah, najis-mutanajjis, and istihalahwith the purification principles of biotechnology, this study proposes the Fiqh of Biotechnology as a new approach in assessing the halal status of vaccines containing pig-derived ingredients

Hermeneutic’s Ibn Arabi: An Alternative in Understanding Texts for Islamic Moderation

    No full text
The recent phenomenon of radicalism is attributed to rigid and intellectualistic interpretations of religious texts. Referring to the classical thought of Ibn Arabi, there is a common thread in understanding religious texts that involves not only a literal (dhahir) approach but also an inner (batin) approach. This inner approach creates a more inclusive and universal understanding of religious texts. The inner approach introduced by Ibn Arabi, known as ta’wil, is understood in philosophical studies as hermeneutics. Ibn ‘Arabi’s thought is particularly interesting for deeper examination because it introduces various essential themes in Sufism, such as Wahdat al-Wujud, the concept of prophethood, entities, and others. This is inseparable from his paradigm, rich in hermeneutics based on spiritual experience and distinctive mystical knowledge, setting him apart from other mystics. This study employs a literature review method with a hermeneutical approach to further explore Ibn Arabi’s hermeneutical concepts within the context of Islam. The findings indicate that the characteristics of Ibn Arabi’s knowledge paradigm can be observed through his hermeneutical methods, which are derived from the power of imagination, the use of symbols in understanding texts, and epistemology and sources of knowledge. These characteristics contribute to the development of epistemology in understanding religious texts, such as the Qur’an and Hadith

BATE MANURUN SEBAGAI MEDIUM TEOLOGI KONTEKSTUAL

    No full text
Kata Kunci: kekekalan, mengilahi; ritual kematian; ritual kehidupan; ritual berpasangan; puya   This study aims to explore bate manurun within the cultural context of the Toraja people as a medium for contextual theology through an anthropological approach. In Torajan tradition, bate manurun functions not merely as a cultural artifact but also carries deep symbolic and spiritual significance. This symbol expresses profound religiosity, encompassing a sense of sacredness, strong relational ties with ancestors, and the hope of eternal life. By employing Stephen Bevans’ anthropological model of contextual theology, this research examines how the meaning of bate can be transformed within the framework of Christian faith in Toraja. Data were collected through literature review, field observation, and interviews with traditional leaders and church figures. The analysis reveals that this symbol facilitates a dynamic dialogue between faith and culture, enabling Christianity to take root in the local context without losing its universality. By adopting a contextual approach, the church is empowered to integrate local symbols as part of a gospel proclamation that is both relevant and transformative. PEMBACAAN EVALUATIF HILMI ALI SYA’BAN ATAS NARASI KISAH NABI YUSUF DAN SULAIMAN DALAM AL-QUR’AN DAN ALKITAB

    No full text
Kata kunci: Yusuf, Sulaiman, Sya’ban, Perbandingan, Evaluasi     This study aims to analyze Hilmi Ali Sya’ban’s evaluative reading of the narratives of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) and Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon) as presented in the Qur’an and the Bible. This evaluative approach reveals how Sya’ban utilizes sources from both scriptures to construct a more comprehensive narrative, emphasizing corrective, complementary, and interpretative aspects in the process. The study identifies the forms of Sya’ban’s evaluative reading, demonstrating a creative response to narratives deemed to have incomplete elements (indeterminate aspects), as theorized by Roman Ingarden and Wolfgang Iser in reception theory. Using a qualitative method based on library research, the study explores the factors underlying Sya’ban’s narrative choices, including the horizon of expectations and the context of Islamic tradition. The findings indicate that Sya’ban’s evaluative reading leverages the Bible to complement or critique Qur’anic narratives, thereby producing a narrative that not only strengthens the Islamic perspective but also fosters a dialogical space between traditions, enriching religious studies. These findings highlight the importance of an intertextual approach in understanding the relationship between interfaith narratives more profoundly and relevantly.   Keyword: Yusuf , Sulaiman , Sya’ban, Komparation ,Evaluatio
