“Who is there?” - Metagenómica no conceito “One Health” – identificar o invisível

Molecular detection of canine herpesvirus in the reproductive tract of the bitch in different stages of the estrous cycle
Canine herpesvirus type I (CHV-1), widely spread among dogs in breeding kennels, is thought to be a major cause of infertility, reproductive disorders and neonatal mortality. In adults, infection remains latent and can be reactivated during stressful events. However, the correlation between the shedding of the virus and the phase of the estrous cycle is still unknown.
Objectives: The present study aimed to identify the presence of CHV-1 in bitches and to correlate its presence with the different phases of the estrous cycle, the bitches' reproductive health, epidemiological parameters and management conditions.
Material & Methods: Between September 2021 and April 2022, 60 bitches of various ages and breeds, attending reproduction consultation at Anicura Atlântico Veterinary Reproduction Centre, were included in the study. For each animal, a vaginal swab was collected and a questionnaire about the bitches’ health and reproductive history was filled. For each animal, the phase of the estrous cycle was determined, DNA was extracted from vaginal swabs and real-time PCR was performed to detect the presence of CHV-1 DNA.
Results: CHV-1 DNA was detected in 3,3% (2/60) of the samples. Both were adult animals in estrus, without CHV-1 vaccination, belonging to breeding kennels with history of infertility.
Conclusions: As far as the authors are aware, the present study constitutes the first description of CHV-1 molecular detection in female dogs in Portugal. The fact that the virus was identified during estrus, highlights the need for further studies to clarify an eventual association of the follicular phase and virus reactivation, which may impair ulterior fertility. Also, lack of vaccination against CHV-1 during pregnancy, kennel dimensions and animals’ density may predispose to a higher frequency of (re)infection. Further studies are needed for a better understanding of CHV-1 transmission and the association of the infection with the reproductive health of female dogs.

Playful PHI: Using Cognitive Behavioral Game Design (CBGD) to Create a COVID-19 Prevention Game, Vaccine Nation
During the Covid-19 pandemic, scientists and public health organizations such as the CDC and the WHO promoted health guidelines to the public. However, social media misinformation, social stigma, and a drastic change in lifestyle lead to reduced compliance or non-compliance with these measures. As a result, playful public health messaging emerged as an attempt to increase health literacy around Covid-19 preventative practices, one of which was the tower defense game, Vaccine Nation. This article outlines the design principles of Cognitive Behavioral Game Design (CBGD) and how they were used to design the tower-defense game Vaccine Nation, incorporating recommended health interventions including isolating, hand hygiene, social distancing, wearing masks, and eventually getting vaccinated.
Breaking barriers in veterinary education: SimuBov project
Objectives: Abdominal surgery is a frequent procedure in bovine clinics. Abomasal displacement is a common diagnosis that is usually demands surgical treatment, requiring blind palpation and assessment of abdominal organs, making this intervention a required Day One Competency for veterinarians. Training this procedure during undergraduate studies is challenging, since real cases are short for the high number of students and commercial bovine abdominal surgery simulators are not available for purchase. Therefore, the SimuBov project aims to develop a life-size model for comprehensive training in abomasal displacement diagnosis and correction.
Material and Methods: Digital modelling of a bovine stomach and greater omentum was achieved by 3D scanning of a miniature prototype, which combined a plastic anatomical model with clay-sculpted anatomical alterations (Milan®, Spain). The digital data was processed for 3D (Prusa Slicer) and printed in two parts with flexible materials (TPU) in a 50*50cm FDM printer. The next phase involves joining the parts of the life-size organ model and add the support system to be mounted within a full-size cow simulator.
Results: Our team has accomplished digital modelling and successfully printed a 3D bovine stomach and greater omentum prototype model, achieving a high-fidelity anatomical representation suitable for designing an abomasopexy and omentopexy simulator. The prototype model components exhibited the required flexibility, texture and durability for practical use.
Conclusion: Following the success in 3D model creation, further validation is needed to assess its effectiveness in improving veterinary students' surgical skills. Initial evaluations suggest the 3D-printed organs are suitable for practical training without live animals. However, comprehensive testing and feedback from students and veterinarians are essential to refine the model and confirm its educational impact.

Prevalence of FeLV and viral subtypes in feral cats
Objectives: The high concentration of feral cat colonies in Portugal is one of the main factors for Portugal showed the highest prevalence of the Feline Leukemia Virus Infection (FeLV) in Europe. Progressive infection is known to still be high especially in Southern Europe. In addition to the viral load, the subtypes are determining factors in the development of the various syndromes associated with this disease: neoplasms (FeLV-B is associated with lymphomas and leukemias), bone marrow disorders (FeLV-C mainly associated with anemias), immunosuppression and immunoproliferation. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of FeLV and identify the circulating viral subtype in feral cats in the Lisbon area.
Material and methods: This prospective study was conducted at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the FMV-ULusófona, from November 2022 to January 2023. Blood samples from 131 domestic cats from Lisbon area were enrolled. All samples were tested for p27 antigen detection and proviral DNA by qPCR. For the detection of FeLV subtypes (A, B and C) nested PCR was performed.
Results: The results showed that at the time of enrolment, 8.4% (n=11/131) of the cats tested positive for FeLV using p27 antigen and qPCR for proviral DNA. Considering the proviral DNA load, 83.3% (n=10/11) of the FeLV infections were classified as "likely progressive infection" (>4.0x105 copies/mL). For the remaining animal, the FeLV infection was classified as "likely regressive infection" (≤4.0x105 copies/mL).
In this study, the most common FeLV subtype was FeLV-A (45.4%, n=5/11), followed by FeLV-B and combination AB (27.3%, n=3/11 for both). FeLV-C subtype was not detected.
Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that the prevalence of FeLV prevalence in this group of was not higher than we expected. However, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to research FeLV subtypes in Portugal. Further studies are needed.

Descriptive study of feline lymphoma over a period of 7 years
Objectives: Lymphoma is the most common neoplasm seen in cat but stills difficult to predict the course of disease and response to treatment. Prevalences of the different anatomical forms differ markedly within studies, presumably related to diagnostic procedures, genetic and environmental factors. The aim of the study was to describe a feline lymphoma population according to anatomic location, diagnostic method, FIV/FeLV infection and treatment approach.
Material and Methods: The clinical data were retrospectively collected. The inclusion criteria were cats (N=150) with lymphoma, diagnosed by cytology, histopathology or both.
Results: Over the period 2017-2024, 20 new cases of lymphoma were diagnosed on average per year, with a notorious increase in the last 3 years. Most of diagnosis were made through cytology alone (69%; 104/150), cytology and histopathology (25%; 38/150) and histopathology only (6%; 8/150). The most frequent anatomic locations were alimentary (45%; 68/150), followed by extranodal (20%; 30/150), mediastinic (17%;25/150), multicentric (8%; 13/150), nodal (5%;7/150) and leukemic (5%; 7/150). Regarding FIV and FeLV status, 66% (99/150) of the cats were tested, being 33% (49/150) negative, while 25% (38/150) were FeLV positive, 7% (10/150) were FIV positive, while 1% (2/150) was positive for both viruses. About 45% (67/150) of the cats were treated, 34% (52/150) were not and 21% (31/150) were lost to follow up. Within the treated animals, 22 were treated with palliative therapy, 17 with CHOP, 17 with chlorambucil and prednisolone, 2 with lomustine and prednisolone and 8 with COP.
Conclusion: The worldwide shift in the anatomical subtype of feline lymphoma to the alimentary form also occurred in our study population, although the relatively high percentage of FeLV positive animals. Prognostic conclusions in cats with lymphoma are difficult because of the limited animals treated for the same anatomical form, subtype classification, stage, viral status and chemotherapy protocol. More studies are warranted.

Abandonar o Local do Acidente: Crime Contra a Segurança Rodoviária ou Falta de Solidariedade com as Vítimas?
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the crime of leaving the scene of an accident and its evolution in Spain until its (re)incorporation into the Spanish Criminal Code after the entry into force of Organic Law 2/2019, of 1 March. Furthermore, highlighting its evolution -and transformation- throughout the 21st century and the fact that the offence of leaving the scene of the accident is currently typified by administrative regulations in various legal texts, the reasons that could justify -or not- a reasonable criminal regulation that does not limit the main guarantees of a liberal criminal law typical of democratic states governed by the rule of law are addressed. In this way, the search for a legal asset of particular gravity that shows us this is fundamental.
The article focuses on the issues raised for patent law by the emergence of artificial intelligence.
We focus on Artificial Intelligence Systems (AIS) as programs with the ability to generate new functionalities and/or solutions to technical problems not specifically foreseen by processing massive amounts of data and training processes.
These EIS can be seen as either instrumental subjects or drivers of the inventive process, and potentially be recognized as inventors and/or holders of the right to register. The result of their processing may constitute a technical solution to a technical problem and therefore patentable subject matter, and therefore be recognized as an invention (either the EIS or the result of its processing).
However, this is only an approximation of these controversies, as their in-depth discussion would require a substantially longer text than the one we set out to write.

The present article aims to explore whether we should adopt a principles-based regulation—i.e., one that is less prone to legislative prolixity and more favorable to open-ended legal formulations—to frame FinTech activities within the national legal system. The answer can only be given after an analysis of the current functioning of our legal order. The repetitive assertion that principles-based regulation is the best solution for innovation hinders a thorough examination of its contours, the advantages and disadvantages of this approach, and a comparison with its greatest benefits. It also prevents the identification and elimination of ineffective, counterproductive, and contradictory elements within our legal framework. Furthermore, it seeks to determine whether a principles-based regulation can foster innovation while simultaneously safeguarding essential legal values, as some authors argue.
