BEYOND SPEECH ACTS: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SILENCE IN THE SHINTO MARRIAGE RITUAL
Rituals and ceremonies in the Western tradition, give priority to the spoken word and various kinds of declarations. But in the Asian tradition, there is also an appreciation for the unspoken. In this article, the researcher will examine the non-verbal communication which takes place in the Shinto marriage ritual. The marriage is accomplished without “words,” “announcements,” or “declarations.” The consummation of the marriage takes place when the couple quietly drinks the sacred liquid, three times in three different cups, for a total of nine times. It is only then the marriage is accomplished. By investigating such a ritual in the Japanese culture or Eastern culture, the paper also suggests limits to Western speech act theory as developed by John Searle
RELATIVE VALUATION OF STOCKS: EVIDENCE FROM THE LISTED CEMENT MANUFACTURING COMPANIES OF BANGLADESH
The paper aims to apply the relative valuation technique to the listed cement manufacturing companies of Bangladesh and address whether they are mispriced (overvalued/undervalued) or not. It considers the financial information of seven listed cement manufacturing companies of Bangladesh. All the financial data used in this study has been collected from the annual reports published in their websites for the financial year 2020-2021. On the contrary, closing prices of their stocks for the same year has been collected from the website of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), one of the two major stock exchanges of Bangladesh. The study reveals that in terms of the selected multiples (PS, PE and PB) all the sample companies are undervalued. But when comparison is made in terms of the relative value and the market value, six companies except one were found undervalued. This implies that despite their strong financial and operating performance, the stocks of the listed cement manufacturing companies are not correctly priced.
Comparative Analysis of Factor-Based and Composite-Based Structural Equation Models: Factors Affecting Word-of-Mouth of Tourists in Khung Bang Kachao
Structural Equation Models (SEMs) are commonly categorized into two main types: factor-based SEM and composite-based SEM. Each type is suitable for analyzing different forms of hypothetical constructs. Factor-based SEM is well-suited for analyzing factors, while composite-based SEM is tailored for analyzing composites. However, the majority of past research has favored composite-based SEM, particularly Partial Least Squares (PLS), for analyzing factors. Such practices can introduce biases into the analysis.
This article provides an illustrative example from the tourism and hotel management domain by analyzing hypothetical constructs in two scenarios: one where the constructs are treated as factors and another where they are treated as composites. The study includes six constructs: service quality, atmosphere, perceived value, satisfaction, revisit intentions, and word-of-mouth. In the first scenario, the research objective is theory testing, while in the second scenario, the research aims to assess the model’s predictive capabilities when applied to datasets beyond those used for the analysis.
The constructs of service quality, atmosphere, and perceived value are assumed to influence satisfaction, while satisfaction and service quality are hypothesized to impact revisit intentions. Perceived value, satisfaction, and revisit intentions are further assumed to trigger word-of-mouth
Investigation through the Lens of Guardians of Factors Impacting Student Satisfaction and Behavioral Intention to be Educated by Cartoon Animation in China
This research aims to investigate the factors impacting student satisfaction and behavioral intention to be educated by cartoon animation in Sichuan, China. The quantitative survey was completed by students’ guardians, constructed with information quality, service quality, perceived usefulness, negative economic impacts, negative sociocultural impacts, satisfaction, and behavioral intentions. The target population involves 500 guardians whose children are between grades 1 to 4 and have been educated with cartoon animation in a primary school. The sampling techniques involve judgmental and convenience sampling. Before the data collection, Item Objective Congruence (IOC) Index and the pilot test (n=50) with Cronbach’s Alpha were used. Data were analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM). The hypotheses testing was measured with a p-value<0.05. The results were that five out of six hypotheses were supported. Information quality significantly influences perceived usefulness. Perceived usefulness, negative economic impact, and negative sociocultural impacts significantly influence satisfaction. Satisfaction significantly influences behavioral intentions. On the other hand, service quality has no significant influence on perceived usefulness. The findings provide a better understanding for animation developers, educators, and students’ guardians to improve this animated cartoon content and monitor their children’s behavioral intentions for their learning purpose

The conceptual framework demonstrates the interrelationships among confirmation, system quality, service quality, perceived usefulness, satisfaction, information quality, satisfaction, and continuance intention. The researcher used a quantitative survey strategy to distribute questionnaires to a sample of 500 undergraduate students selected from three target universities. Three sampling techniques were employed in this survey, utilizing judgmental, quota and convenience sampling to collect data. The collected data was analyzed using validated factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM), with model goodness-of-fit, correlation validity, and reliability tests conducted for each component. All exogenous variables were found to significantly impact the endogenous variable of interest, with perceived usefulness exhibiting the strongest on satisfaction. Additionally, satisfaction demonstrated a highly significant influence on continuance intention. In conclusion, system developers and educational institutions should actively collaborate to enhance the quality of learning resources. Besides instructing with self-made teaching materials, the online education system should leverage the advantages of the internet and network technology to develop e-learning resources effectively
Developing a Leadership Model for Enhancing Leadership Characteristics of Thai Salesian Students
Leadership involves inspiring, influencing, and directing people to work together to achieve goals and objectives. Student leaders need to enhance their leadership characteristics to help them be better and thrive in the future. Relatively, students are trained to develop their holistic growth with the mission and uniqueness of the Salesian Society Foundation of Thailand. Therefore, this study aimed in developing a model to enhance Thai Salesian students' characteristics. The study was conducted in all five schools under the Salesian Society Foundation of Thailand with a sample size of 351 students. The research applied qualitative and quantitative methods designed with qualitative data from the literature resources to create questionnaires and experts' qualitative interview data to triangle data in developing a mode with activities enhancing characteristics. The findings resulted in seven leadership characteristics of Thai Salesian students: commitment, communication, inspiration, morality, teamwork, service mind, and vision. Based on the questionnaire to find the needs for improvement priority index, the study disclosed that among Thai Salesian students, leadership characteristics that needed priority improvement were ranked as follows: (1) teamwork, (2) commitment, (3) inspiration, (4) vision, (5) service mind, (6) communication, and (7) morality. As a result, the four leadership characteristics that need to be developed are teamwork, commitment, inspiration, and vision.
The Effect of Work-Family Conflict on Turnover Intention for White-Collar Workers: Examining the Mediating Role of Job Stress and Burnout
White-collar workers are a large workforce group that has an impact on organizational performance, as they possess knowledge, skills, and educational backgrounds that are valuable resources for their organizations. The aim of this study is to examine the interplay between work-family conflict and turnover intentions, along with the mediating effects of job stress and burnout within that association. The study collected empirical data from 400 white-collar workers in private organizations in Thailand. The result supported the hypothesized model, where direct effect and indirect effect were tested. The findings of the structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis revealed an association between work-family conflict and turnover intentions, job stress, and burnout, respectively. What’s more, the results indicate that job stress and burnout were associated with turnover intentions. According to the mediation analysis results, job stress appeared to partially mediate the relationship between work-family conflict and turnover intentions. Correspondingly, burnout was found to partially mediate the relationship between work-family conflict and turnover intentions. The findings have theoretical implications which indicate that this framework also supports the majority of white-collar workers in most industries, not only in specific professions. This approach can be beneficial for retaining talented employees within an organization.
