Gambling-Motivated Market Attention and Stock Market Volatility

    Get PDF
Retail investors show gambling preferences and pay greater attention to the market than individual stocks. Previous studies report a positive and significant relationship between market attention and volatility. This relationship results from the joint effects of attention to investment-motivated and gambling-motivated components. However, the separate roles of these two components have not yet been examined. Hence, this study applied principal component analysis to identify the gambling-motivated component from market attention and gambling-related variables. The investment-motivated component is the regression residual of the market’s attention paid to the gambling-motivated component. This study linearly relates these two components to volatility. The generalized method of moments regression was used to resolve endogeneity problems and biased estimates. The Google search volume index is a proxy for unobserved retail investors’ market attention. Using a daily sample of the Thai market from August 6, 2008, to September 30, 2022 (a total of 3,450 observations), this study found a positive relationship between market attention and stock market volatility. This relationship results from the positive effects of both investment-motivated and gambling-motivated components. Attention to gambling is more influential than attention to investment. The explanatory powers of gambling-attention and investment-attention for volatility were 81.33% and 18.67%, respectively. These effects were less pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Get PDF
As the biggest occupational hazard in the 21st century, job burnout has become a “chronic killer” of teachers’ physical and mental health. The research adopts action research as a research method and non-randomized control group and experimental group samples are used for comparison, quantitative and qualitative data were used to measure and analyze the impacts of organizational development intervention (ODI) on psychological capital (PC), organizational commitment (OC), and teachers’ job burnout (JB). In the ODI stage, researchers try to develop PC and OC through career planning and development, appreciative inquiry, and team building to help teachers improve their ability to deal with JB. The results of post-ODI stage demonstrated that the teachers’ JB in experimental group decreased significantly, PC and OC have a negative correlation with teachers’ JB. Without any interventions, the control group did not significantly improve between the pre-ODI and post-ODI stages. This research supports the effects of PC and OC on teachers’ JB through ODI

    Get PDF
For the past two decades, forensic science has been playing essential role in criminal investigation in Thailand.  It has been praised as a game changer for criminal justice. The work of Thai forensic police officers has profoundly altered how police investigated crimes since it can provide evidence for answering crucial questions like Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? more objectively and expeditiously among other available tools. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the behind-the-scenes type of work, Thai forensic police officers perceive themselves as just scientists working in some backroom laboratory who has no real influence nor decision making power in the overall investigation process. Thus, this study aims to explore these issues in the hope of enhancing the Thai forensic police officers’ (FPO) self-efficacy (SE), meaningful work (MW), and job crafting (JC). The study applied self-efficacy theory, meaning in work based on job characteristics theory and job crafting model as the theoretical framework. Three hypotheses were derived to evaluate significant difference between Pre-ODI and Post-ODI based on self-efficacy, meaningful work, and job crafting. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected and used for analysis. They were obtained from 30 forensic police officers from eight different functions stationed in ten provinces using stratified sampling technique. Organization development interventions (ODI) were executed over the period of two months using individual coaching techniques, and questionnaires and interviews as instruments. Reflexive thematic analysis paired samples t-test, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were chosen to analyze the data. Findings revealed that self-efficacy and meaningful work showed significant differences after the coaching intervention, whereas job crafting failed to exhibit any statistical significance
