The moroccan banking system and FinTech deployment: an overview of the literature
This study provides an in-depth analysis of the Moroccan financial system by examining key banking institutions, their characteristics, and their services. Under King Mohammed VI’s leadership, Morocco has emerged as one of the most financially advanced Mediterranean countries and the most developed in the Maghreb. Its openness in tourism and finance has facilitated the growth of both conventional and Islamic banking sectors. Using a qualitative methodology, this research follows a structured approach. First, a literature review examines academic and regulatory perspectives on Morocco’s financial system. Then, we analyze Moroccan banks by classifying them as commercial or business institutions and distinguishing between local and foreign financial entities. The study categorizes services into retail, corporate, and digital (FinTech), focusing on Sharia-compliant banking and its customer offerings. Furthermore, it assesses the evolution of digital financial services among Moroccan banking groups and foreign-owned banks. A unique aspect of this research, coauthored by management scholars and Arab studies experts, is its examination of how Moroccan banks communicate with customers, including language use and segmentation based on Sharia compliance. The findings will highlight Morocco’s banking strengths and potential improvements that could inspire financial strategies in Italy and other European countries with significant Muslim communities. Additionally, this study identifies best practices for expanding Sharia-compliant services to the hundreds of thousands of Muslim immigrants from Morocco and the broader Maghreb region
The revival of China time-honoured brands: Following the paw prints of the “White Rabbit” (Dabaitu大白兔)
This article fills an existing gap by examining the ongoing revival of China time-honoured brands (laozihao). It first offers a critical overview of the recent changes that happened in the perception of Chinese brands outside China and their current development inside China, by relating them to the country’s wider strategies of soft power and national branding. After providing an updated account of the governmental regulation concerning the revival of laozihao, the article focuses on the brand White Rabbit (Dabaitu) as a case study. Based on the theoretical framing that brands are cultural texts, it identifies the different historical phases of WR development and provides a critical analysis of the branding and promotional strategies that allowed it to thrive over the past few decades, in line with the official priority of shifting to “Created in China” and the increasing demand for Guochao
Sex and irony in Zhang Dachun’s Bildungsroman Wo Meimei
Growing up in the juancun 眷村 (soldiers’ villages) communities of Taiwan during the 1980s, contemporary Taiwanese author Zhang Dachun 张大春 (b. 1957) appears to have embraced the postmodern ideas and techniques, drawing inspiration from writers like Roland Barthes and Umberto Eco in his literary work. Since the publication of his novel Da Shuohuangjia 大說謊家 (“The Big Liar,” 1989), Zhang Dachun earned the moniker “the big liar,” and his novels have been described as metafictional, employing a postmodern approach that playfully utilizes signs and symbols to convey meanings or “lies” (Peng 2009).
In 1993, under the pen name Datou Chun 大头春 (“Big-head Spring”), the author published a semi-autobiographical Bildungsroman (qingchun xiaoshuo 青春小說) titled Wo Meimei 我妹妹 (“My Kid Sister”), adopting a sarcastic teenage narrative voice. The novel depicts his own growth, as well as that of his sister, who is eight years younger, within the complex historical and political backdrop of 1980s Taiwan. Throughout the novel, there are numerous references to children’s sexual instincts and behaviors, often reinterpreted through a Freudian lens. These references are intertwined with the author’s personal experiences rooted in contemporary Taiwan’s reality and metafictional discussions on narrative meaning and strategies. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to gather these references and shed light on Zhang Dachun’s reception of postmodernism while reconstructing his distinct “poetics of the lie.

Sensing Swahili aesth-ethics with and through Mzee Farouk Topan’s wor(l)dings
In this chapter I argue that intellectual biography as a western scientific method does not allow us to sense Swahili wor(l)ds, because it assumes life (bio-) and (written) work (-graphy) to be separate, primordial entities. In this view, authors and their intellectuality exist prior to—and therefore separately from—their work, and their biographies can be written ‘at a distance’ by somebody else. What if bio- and -graphy were, instead, inseparable and co-constitutive of the ‘becoming intellectual’? How could we then humbly attempt to sense the unfolding becoming of intellectuals with and through their work? Exploring these questions, I engage with Mzee Farouk Mohamed Hussein Tharia Topan’s intellectuality through the Swahili tradition of wasifu, which is not just a fixed and delimitating literary biography compendium. Rather it encompasses a long poetic tradition in oral narrations, and, importantly, it is born across the Indian Ocean, carrying a sense of belonging that is uniquely and specifically Swahili. After introducing the concepting that co-constitutes my reflection, I will attempt to share how I was touched by, and, in reverse, could touch the words of Mzee Farouk in the ways of wasifu, an experience of sensing Swahili aesth-ethics that emerges through his own wor(l)dings (wordings and worldings)
Outline of Shaaban Robert’s idealism
The influence and dominance of Anglo-American philosophy since World War II has left the false impression that the philosophical ideas of thinkers can only be found in either the journals dedicated to the different aspects and branches of the discipline, or in the compendiums and treatises of their authors traditionally regarded to be philosophical within those traditions. I said “false,” because it is hardly the case, yet the cultural bias and arrogance that came with colonial power left many people across the colonized world, especially in Africa, believing that philosophy had homes only in European languages and not in any one of their own. To be sure, style is one thing, and the thought content of a thinker’s endeavors is a whole different matter. The Western colonial biases in defining what ought to be regarded as philosophy has led to the neglect or underrepresentation of the materials and content of philosophical education in formerly colonized countries and cultures. But this ought not be the norm, as experiential issues thinkers deal with, as well as the styles they present these concerns in, vary from tradition to tradition, and none of them is more valid than another. In what follows I sketch how Shaaban Robert’s works can be read and reflected on, despite his unique and eclectic style, as works in social, moral, and even political philosophy. As he says it himself, a good text must be judged by the estimation of the audiences for whom it is written, and this can be the case only if the text appeals to, and stimulates their intellectual and emotional arousal, both of which are functions of the vernacular. Are English, French, German, Russian, Chinese, and any other language out there in the rest of the world, not just vernaculars to their respective native speakers after all? Similarly, and naturally for that matter, KiSwahili is the native language of all those people who consider it their native language through which they experience and think about the world
Theories and models for sustainable agroecology business networks: Lessons for agroecology business networks and markets in Eastern Uganda-Teso region
We study theories and models for sustainable agroecology business networks and lessons applicable to agroecology businesses and markets in Eastern Uganda. Agroecology, as both a science and social movement, offers promising solutions for building resilient food systems. However, transitioning from conventional market-driven agriculture to agroecology-based systems presents challenges, particularly in the marketing of agroecological products. To address this gap, we examine various theories and models for sustainable agroecological business networks, aiming to identify interventions that catalyse the transitioning and sustainability of agroecological business networks through enhanced marketing. Methods involved document analysis, following interpretive qualitative research, and stakeholder participatory market system mapping and development. The results indicated seven theories shaping the principles and practices of agroecology business networks, one approach for developing market systems, and ten models for social, economic, and environmental interventions in agroecology networks. The Model for Women’s Entrepreneurship in Agroecology and Food Systems scored the highest at 93% to address the disablers of transitioning towards agroecology. From this model, and with support of other literature, we proposed the EquiAgro; A gender-inclusive Agroecological Business Model for Agroecology Business Networks and Markets. Our conclusions provide strategies for co-creating sustainable, resilient and socially inclusive agricultural systems that prioritize environmental stewardship and community well-being
Circular economy in action: Co-creating shared value in the tapioca industry of Indonesia
Circular Economy (CE) integrates social and environmental considerations into business strategies, recognizing these aspects as crucial for achieving organizational and ecosystems sustainability. While previous studies on CE and its correlation with Creating Shared Value (CSV) predominantly focus on developed nations, this research aims to fill the gap by showing an empirical investigation of the implementation of a circular business model in the tapioca industry of Indonesia. This study employed the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework, encompassing economic, environmental, and social performance and analysed 132 survey responses from tapioca business managers and owners in Indonesia using a quantitative approach with SmartPLS 4. The findings indicate that CE and CSV practices positively influence TBL performance and reveal a strong association between CE practices and CSV opportunities. By aligning with the TBL framework, this study highlights the transformative potential of CE and CSV practices in driving sustainability, profitability, and social equity in the global agroindustry
Plasticità dell’arte, plasticità del cervello
The present text on the plasticity of art and brain was presented by Horst Bredekamp at the symposium Brain Roads. Exploring Neuroplasticity Through Art and Science. This event, held in Berlin on November 2, 2023 as part of the Berlin Science Week 2023 and supported by the Cluster of Excellence “Matters of Activity. Image Space Material” of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and by the Ambassade de France en Allemagne, was organized by Patricia Ribault and Olaf Avenati with the aim of fostering a dialogue between the arts (especially graphic arts and design) and neurosurgery. Featuring a keynote lecture by Hugues Duffau (Professor and Chairman of the Neurosurgery Department in the Montpellier University Medical Center and Head of the team “Plasticity of the central nervous system, human stem cells and glial tumors” at the Institute for Neurosciences of Montpellier), the symposium also invited artists and scholars from the humanities to reflect on the unique aspects of the neurosurgical procedures performed by Duffau and his team, during which the patient remains awake throughout the entire operation and actively participates in it by engaging in an actual dialogue. More information about the event is available at the following link: https://www.matters-of-activity.de/en/activities/11943/brain-roads. A volume collecting the results of the various editions of the symposium and the activities related to this project is forthcoming (in English). A heartfelt thank you goes to Patricia Ribault and Olaf Avenati, not only for organizing and making the Brain Roads events possible, but also for the opportunity to reproduce this contribution in the 22nd issue of Philosophy Kitchen. Finally, sincere thanks to Professor Horst Bredekamp for his generosity in making his text available to the readers of Philosophy Kitchen. The present text on the plasticity of art and brain was presented by Horst Bredekamp at the symposium Brain Roads. Considerazioni sul bias nella pedagogia medica basata su AI
Introduction: The advent of Large Language Models in 2022 is requiring a reconsideration of the contents to be included in Artificial Intelligence (AI) training for healthcare personnel. Objectives: A review of the literature published since the launch of ChatGPT has been performed, to identify which contents are suggested for inclusion in AI training for healthcare personnel. Methods: the review has been conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR extension to the PRISMA statement. Only items containing primary data have been included, thus excluding literature reviews. Results: 10101 items have been identified, of which 21 have been selected for review. These include original articles, letters, commentaries, opinion papers, editorials, interviews.Discussion: The items extracted from the literature address almost exclusively medical training. The analysis failed to identify methodologically robust studies on the contents to be included in AI training for healthcare personnel. There is however consensus on the fact that content on the broader technical, application, ethics, and regulatory aspects should take priority over direct operativity on informatics tools.Introduzione. L’avvento dei Large Language Models nel 2022 richiede una riconsiderazione dei contenuti da includere nella formazione all’intelligenza artificiale (AI) del personale medico-sanitario. 5VOL. 24 N. 1, 2023: 5 - 24DOI:10.13135/1971-8551/11033Obiettivi. Una revisione della letteratura pubblicata dall’avvento di ChatGPT in poi è stata effettuata per identificare quali contenuti vengano indicati per i corsi di formazione all’AI rivolti all’ambito medico-sanitario.Metodi e strumenti.
