The world of jazz has always shown a particular interest towards the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Book 1 of the Well-Tempered Clavier (1722-2022) was the incentive to investigate particularly the relation between jazz and this work. In the first part of this paper the authors analyse some possible motivations and general trends concerning the relationship between jazzmen and Bach's music. Some themes came out: ie the respect, or even devotion for Bach. On the other side many jazz musicians feel familiar with Bach, sometimes called "the first jazzman". In the second part, the focus is on some works by individual jazz musicians from different periods, countries and cultural trends (Jacques Loussier Trio, 1959 e 1960; John Lewis, 1985-1990; Enrico Pieranunzi, 2011; Édouard Ferlet, 2012; Brad Mehldau, 2018; Johann Sebastian Jazz [Iñaki Salvador e Alexis Delgado Búrdalo], 2020). Starting from analytical comments about these works, it's possible to notice how Bach's music has stimulated different and highly original readings. In Appendix is provided a catalogue, of course not exhaustive, of Bach-oriented jazz recordings, issued since 1935, until the 2022 anniversary. For each item there is a remark about the kind of elaboration, ranging from a simple reference in the title, to "jazz fugues", to more thorough and transformative creative reworking.

A synthesis of educational chanted rules: The chapter Xuntong men 訓童門 in riyong leishu 日用類書

Among the many chapters on all human knowledge provided by the 1612 encyclopedia entitled Xin ban zengbu tianxia bian yong wenlin miao jin wanbao quanshu (The marvelous, precious, newly edited and supplemented “Complete Book of Myriad Treasures” of literati for the convenient use of all), there is also one on infant education. In the introduction of the chapter, the author stresses the importance of education, and how it can transform a person’s life. Therefore, what were the recommended teaching strategies for raising virtuous children? What was the common etiquette for a child to follow in seventeenth-century China? What analogy or difference does it have in comparison to previous pedagogical literature? This paper, by means of the partial English translation of the encyclopedic chapter Xuntong men 訓童門 (section for educating children), tries to answer these questions by analyzing the educational precepts, their roots anchored in the Chinese pedagogical literature and the use of rhymes such as erge 兒歌, geyao 歌謠, as an effective teaching strategy to make the precepts simpler and catchy.  The selected case study represents a model example of printed text which belongs to the genre riyong leishu 日用類書 (a collection of texts for daily-use), encyclopedias that circulated widely in late Ming and early Qing China, and reflects what was then the most widespread and common knowledge in the pedagogical field recommended for self-study. The chapter which is focused on teaching children also represents the fusion of Confucian educational concepts and the practical nature characteristic of daily-use encyclopedias

The presence of numerous Italian colonies in South America in the second half of the 19th century and the political and social instability in those countries had led our government to send warships in those waters. It was up to the Caracciolo pyrocorvette to reach the Pacific in 1882 where the war between Chile, Bolivia and Peru was underway. The unit will then travel around the world during almost three years. They will encounter difficulties and unexpected events but also exciting moments. The ship’s commander Carlo De Amezaga will write four volumes on the mission which contain, among other things, an extensive health report written by the on-board doctor Filippo Rho. The experience was useful in enriching knowledge of tropical diseases, later described in Filippo Rho’s great treatise on Prevalent Diseases in Hot and Temperate Countries.

Origins of Brexit: History at the service of media representation

    No full text
Brexit is an ideal media event for analysing the circulation of imaginaries and the identity construction within Europe. The analysis focuses on the history writing as a device in the context of the controversies sparked by Brexit. The device concept allows us to identify the relationships between the media as a framework in which the journalist's writing has the dual objective of informing and arguing, in response to an implicit contract with the readership. The analysis of journalists' choices in writing the past leading to Brexit thus shows the constructed public by the media outlet and the fractures that Brexit reveals in the unity imaginaries conveyed by European institutions. The analysis is based on a thesis work and draws on a corpus of nine press titles in three countries: Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Quantitative and qualitative analyses highlight the circulation of different historical motives: the 1930s, the Suez Canal crisis and the immemorial times of Athenian democracy, Christianity and the Enlightenment. The circulatory approach consists of not comparing differences on a national basis, but rather identifying variations in historical motives according to their polarising power. The historical motives analysis shows the formation of a European semiosphere (Bal, 2023) around Brexit, but also the limits of a European public sphere constitution in Habermas' sense. Pulling democracy up by its national bootstraps? Contemporary societal order in Italy, Europe and the West

Tackling the structures of contemporary political life, constituted by nation, state and political regime, is no easy task. Many scholars have dedicated research to decipher the interlinks, even interdependencies, between state-building, nation-building and the formation of political regimes. By crossing centuries and deconstructing the sedimentation of political phenomena that have characterised domestic political life as well as international relations, the essay reviews some of the major features of what it suggests to be a triadic nation-state-regime edifice. With a specific attention paid to Italian and European societies, issues concerning democratic rule, sovereignism, nationalism, populism and so forth are scrutinised, whilst using processual analysis that indicates lacks and excesses in the Western model of a nation-state-based collectivity. The essay briefly introduces the interdependent threefold infrastructure of modern national statehood and juxtaposes some of the main theses which shaped contemporary political thought. It thus draws from recent scientific literature from which it takes inspiration in bridging different scholarly sensibilities. While placing the Italian case, the European context and the vaster Western morphology of nation-state-democracy combination, the essay adds two other variables that have shaped European and Western citizenry: ideology and nostalgia. The latter are then discussed through both theoretical and empirical exemplification of the dynamic dialectics between individuals, collectivity and societal order. The state of contemporary Western democracy is thus put in relation to its long-term institutional and mental stratification, as forged by national statehood and its seemingly ever-lasting hold.Key-words: democracy, national statehood, Italy, European society, ideology, nostalgi

    No full text
Published in Venice in 1614, the Ars […] de Statica Medicina is the most significant work – both in terms of editions and translations – by the Istrian physician Santorio Santorio (1561–1636), who served for many years as Professor of Theoretical Medicine at Padua and is still remembered for his experiments devoted to quantifying perspiratio insensibilis as well as for elevating principles of measurement to the primary method for defining the patient’s state of health and disease. The 502 aphorisms that compose this treatise are examined here from a linguistic and rhetorical perspective, with the aim of investigating the formal recurrences that characterize the author’s mode of exposition, and explore the connection between writing style and experimental practice. Particular attention is devoted to the unfolding of syntactic structures and to the recurring and strongly marked figures of symmetry that distinguish them: the syntactic parallelism, and the syntactic correlation. Both phenomena, skillfully interwoven, shape aphorisms that, in their very articulation, lay bare the author’s modes of reasoning. In this way, the relationship emerges between the forms of linguistic argumentation and the interpretation of natural phenomena in mathematical terms: a conceptual framework that, on the threshold of the early modern period, came to be applied also in the medical domain, with Santorio standing as one of its foremost exponents. This study thus seeks to enrich –through the analysis of linguistic phenomena as bearers of historical and cultural meaning – our understanding of the profound evolutionary dynamics that shaped the history of ideas in the century of the Scientific Revolution.
