Subverting Immigrant Autobiography in the US: Carlos Bulosan’s “American Is in the Heart” and Louis Adamic
This essay attempts to demonstrate how Louis Adamic’s material and intellectual influence, as well as his textual model, contributed to the writing of the Filipino American foundational text, Carlos Bulosan’s America Is in the Heart (1946), a classic of Asian American literature. Starting with the renowned friendship between the two authors and emphasizing Adamic’s support in guiding Bulosan through the ethnic expectations of the US editorial market – with the suggestion of the autobiographical genre –, this essay argues that Bulosan’s employment and subversion of the immigrant autobiography was partly modeled on Adamic’s semi-autobiography Laughing in the Jungle (1932), a heterodox European immigrant autobiography centered on class issues, social struggle, and the deconstruction of the American dream. The essay offers a brief comparative recognition of immigrant autobiographies written by European and Asian immigrants and their different canonical understanding through the classic works by William Boelhower and Elaine H. Kim. Then, drawing from archival materials and intertextual analysis, the essay argues that America Is in the Heart’s structure, the narrator’s skepticism toward assimilation policies and his attachment to the country of origin, are indebted to Adamic’s influence because of formal and thematic similarities with his semi-autobiography. Nonetheless, the US colonial history of the Philippines and the author’s background rooted in rural Pangasinan, set Bulosan’s text apart from both the European American and Asian American autobiographical “traditions” and thus from the model of Younghill Kang – even though the two undergo the same racial prejudice by the editorial market. America Is in the Heart subverts the immigrant autobiographical genre by re-signifying the concept of “America,” juxtaposing American ideals with the harsh realities of violent exploitation and discrimination experienced by Filipino migrant workers. In doing so, it reframes “America” as a symbol of solidarity between racialized workers against the fascist corporate manifestations that worried Adamic in the 1930s.
A Political Space that Wasn’t There Before: An Interview with Loretta Ross
This interview with Loretta Ross, a foundational figure in the Black feminist movement and a co-creator of the Reproductive Justice framework, provides a comprehensive overview of her life’s work and political perspectives. The discussion, which took place on March 5, 2025, begins with Ross’s personal experiences with reproductive oppression and sexual violence, which she identifies as the catalysts for her lifelong activism. She offers a nuanced explanation of how the concept of Reproductive Justice, which a group of twelve Black women developed, expands upon the traditional “pro-choice” movement. Ross highlights that true Reproductive Justice encompasses not only the right not to have children but also the right to have children and to raise them in a safe and supportive environment. The conversation further explores Ross’s insightful critique of how mainstream media often sensationalizes and overdramatizes reproductive issues. She also discusses the adaptability and universality of the Reproductive Justice framework, explaining how it can be applied to and expanded by diverse groups to address their specific vulnerabilities and concerns. The interview concludes with Ross’s thoughts on strategies for engaging men in the movement, emphasizing the importance of highlighting how these issues affect them and their communities. She also shares her forward-looking perspective on the future of reproductive justice in the face of a global rise in far-right, pro-natalist politics, offering a hopeful vision of resistance

In 1935 Italo Cremona and Carlo Mollino, members of the Turin editorial board of Il Selvaggio, presented an artwork, Tè numero 2, with declared Surrealist reminiscences, at an exhibition at the Società Pro Cultura Femminile of Turin. Two texts dedicated to this installation by Velso Mucci, a contributor to Il Selvaggio who moved to Paris in 1934, and some visual sources for Cremona’s painting offer some hypotheses to enrich the interpretation of Tè numero 2.In 1935 Italo Cremona and Carlo Mollino, members of the Turin editorial board of Il Selvaggio, presented an artwork, Tè numero 2, with declared Surrealist reminiscences, at an exhibition at the Società Pro Cultura Femminile of Turin.
Abstract:
The sea evoked in the medieval writer the limits of man. Three Spanish texts use sea adventures to challenge the boundaries of the human condition. In the Libro de Apolonio, the hero says, 'the man I was, I lost him in the sea' (172). Thus, the sea serves as a trial space that once overcome, allows for his redemption. In the Libro de Alexandre, the sea is a scene of conquest. Alexander's ambition for domination is not limited to just lands; the sea is another territory to subjugate. However, the sea does not want to reveal its secrets, so it seeks ways to stop the hero and put him in his place. In the Libro del cavallero Zifar, the characters' sea voyage is their way to ascend socially, but not without first undergoing trials that highlight their flaws. Despite their imperfections, through their faith in God, Zifar and his family acquire the noble titles they sought. In these texts, the sea proves to be more than just a descriptive element. Whether as a test of faith in the face of adversity, an exploration of the limits of knowledge, or a determinant of true nobility, the sea emerges as a vehicle through which humanity seeks its meaning in the world
The work of Luisa Carnés (1905-1964) is influenced by the biographical experience of this author affiliated at the Communist Party and strongly critical of the coup d'état. Although critical studies of her work have focused on the analysis of her novels, her prolific and little-studied short story works offers the reader a complete overview of the literary profile of this Madrid native writer. Among her short stories, three narratives stand out ("Sin Brújula", "Mar adentro" and La barca encantada") in which Carnés explores the semantic charge of the sea and navigation as a representation of the dispossessed and as a space of transition, an experience that the author herself would know due to her exile in Mexico after the Spanish Civil War
This essay aims to analyse a series of maritime events, mostly of a war-like nature (naval clashes, acts of piracy, arming of military fleets), which have potential implications for the geopolitical, strategic and economic interests of the Duchy of Milan and other European States (the Kingdom of France, the Crown of Aragon and the Kingdom of Naples) in the Western Mediterranean, and more especially in the Ligurian area, during the second half of the 15th Century. The object of the investigation will be the correspondence transmitted from Alessandria and other urban towns and villages of the surrounding territory to the authorities of the central government of the Duchy of Milan, during the reigns of Francesco I Sforza (1450-66), Galeazzo Maria Sforza (1466-76) and Gian Galeazzo Maria Sforza (1476-94).Este ensayo tiene como objetivo analizar una serie de acontecimientos marítimos, en su mayoría de carácter bélico (enfrentamientos navales, actos de piratería, armamento de flotas militares), que presentan implicaciones potenciales para los intereses geopolíticos, estratégicos y económicos del Ducado de Milán y de otros estados europeos (Francia, Corona de Aragón y Reino de Nápoles) en el Mediterráneo occidental, y más especialmente en la zona de Liguria, durante la segunda mitad del siglo XV.
