Un forum su Ricominciare
La sezione Dispositivi ospita in questo secondo numero un forum di discussione dedicato a Ricominciare. Classici della letteratura italiana 1939-1962 (Einaudi, 2025) di Riccardo Gasperina Geroni. Muovendo dalle nozioni di “dispositivo” elaborate da Michel Foucault e Gilles Deleuze, i curatori della sezione propongono di leggere Ricominciare come una formazione strategica che intreccia storia politica e storia letteraria, processi editoriali, pratiche istituzionali e saperi laterali (antropologia, sociologia, studi culturali, storia dell’editoria). Il forum raccoglie gli interventi critici di Lorenzo Marchese, Michela Rossi Sebastiano e Franco Baldasso, che analizzano il volume da prospettive teoriche differenti, soffermandosi sul ritorno riformulato della storia della letteratura e sulla centralità del romanzo nel campo letterario del Novecento. Alle loro osservazioni segue una replica di sintesi dell’autore, che chiarisce presupposti, obiettivi e implicazioni del progetto, insistendo sulla nozione di palingenesi, sull’idea di origine come processo dinamico e conflittuale, sulla lettura dei testi come “rovine” (Baldasso) ancora attive, capaci di parlare al presente
Organising the Smart Future of Living and Mobility: A Welfare Paradox
The research aims to critically examine the renewed Italian regulations on fringe benefits for mixed-use company cars, which came into force in 2025, with a specific focus on the implications for social equity and the transition to electric mobility. The main objective is to highlight the potential disparities in treatment between electric, hybrid and combustion vehicles, as well as the existence of welfare paradoxes. In fact, the primary aim is to analyse the potential paradox of an incentive policy for sustainable mobility that, through the reduction of taxation on company electric vehicles, may inadvertently exacerbate social and economic inequalities. The research is based on a critical perspective of social functionalism, highlighting how the persistence of paradigms of unequal distribution of benefits can be legitimised by policies that incentivise logics of position and social status. The research adopts a mixed methodological approach, based on a field analysis managed by questionnaires and interviews (181 respondents). The authors offer policymakers insights into the dynamics that condition the electric transition, implemented through regulatory incentives, highlighting the risk of generating social frictions and welfare paradoxes.
The results of the analysis highlight an unequal treatment that considerably favours electric vehicles, potentially creating a double advantage for high-income individuals and organisations. This could lead to a regulatory imbalance that manipulates the situation in the automotive market, also hindering a fair requalification of company car fleets
Libertà ed eguaglianza: La traduzione nell’Italia del triennio democratico (1796-1799)
Il boom delle traduzioni alla fine del Settecento non coinvolse solo romanzi, letteratura di viaggio e opere scientifiche, ma anche un fenomeno meno studiato: le traduzioni motivate politicamente e legate ai movimenti democratici inaugurati dalla Rivoluzione francese. Questo saggio analizza le tracce paratestuali lasciate da traduttori e editori militanti, spesso dimenticate oppure oggetto di analisi distratte, come formidabile strumento per la comprensione delle peculiarità della traduzione ‘radicale’ in epoca rivoluzionaria e in particolare delle modalità di autorappresentazione degli agenti storici coinvolti nella produzione di traduzioni attiviste nel contesto italiano. Nel suo complesso, questo corpus paratestuale variegato per modi e forme è uno spazio in cui si articolano la portata transnazionale dell’idee democratiche ma anche le linee di frattura e di resistenza rese evidenti dall’impresa di ‘tradurre la rivoluzione’.
The translation ‘boom’ in the late 18th century did not involve only novels, travel literature and scientific works but also a lesser studied phenomenon, that of politically motivated translations connected to the democratic movements inaugurated by the French Revolution. This essay analyzes the paratextual traces left by militant translators and publishers, which have often been forgotten or neglected. It will show that they are a powerful tool for understanding the peculiarities of ‘radical’ translation in the revolutionary period, and particularly of the modalities of self-representation of historical agents involved in the production of activist translations in the Italian context. This corpus presents a wide variety of modes and forms. As a whole, these paratexts articulate the transnational sway of democratic ideas as well as the fault lines and points of resistance highlighted by the attempt to ‘translate the revolution’.

A vent’anni dalla scomparsa di Jacques Derrida, la sua eredità filosofica non smette di interrogare incessantemente la nostra attualità, attraversando i più svariati domini teorici, culturali, sociali e politici. Il presente volume, così come il successivo, si pone l’obiettivo di saggiare questa eredità, mostrando la fecondità inesauribile del gesto di pensiero della decostruzione. Più che un metodo di analisi precodificato, o una maniera univoca di interpretazione di testi o fenomeni, la decostruzione è una postura, un’esigenza, uno stile di pensiero che mira a mettere in questione, sempre con fare affermativo, ogni aspetto del reale, debordando qualsiasi possibile schematica applicazione. «L’eredità non è mai un dato, è sempre un compito. Che resta davanti a noi, incontestabilmente, al punto che, prima ancora di volerlo o rifiutarlo, noi siamo degli eredi, e degli eredi in lutto, come tutti gli eredi»

Starting with the theme of birth, the essay shows how deconstruction is at work with regard to issues of gender and the family construct, subtracting them from a binary logic. With respect to gender, Derrida does not theorize a neutralization, but on the contrary a pluralization of sexual and gender differences; with respect to motherhood, a deconstruction of the essentializing fetishes makes it possible to break the woman-mother-origin nexus, in the direction of the elaboration of motherhood as “legal fiction”. L’iperbole del presente.: Tornare alla querelle Foucault/Derrida
In 1963, Derrida initiated a significant debate with Foucault. He reproached the author of Folie et déraison for having, through his project of radical historicization, imprisoned within a historical totality that «temporal originality in general» which exceeds history while also founding it. However, the real issue at stake in the controversy emerges as controversy itself: not as an idea belonging to one side or the other, but precisely as the space of dissent. Indeed, it is the present (rather than history) that constitutes the true theme of the debate: the possibility of conceiving a present in which to situate oneself and of which to have a full experience. Foucault, influenced by Derrida’s critique and, above all, by his encounter with Deleuze, would eventually abandon the idea of transgressing rational limits in the direction of the original and uncontaminated ground of madness. Thus, the querelle, in its very polemical and differential form, remains highly relevant in a historical phase where even the left attempts to compensate for a vast political deficit through a mere libidinal investment. Today more than ever, the anxiety for a presence to be enjoyed generates sad and reactive passions.

The general and the artist: Travel narratives in 1930s’ Italy by Cai Tingkai and Huang Juesi
The first half of the twentieth century witnessed unprecedented mobility from China to Europe. Many Chinese travelers came to Europe to travel or study and, once home, contributed in various ways to the construction of the newly born Chinese republic (Levine 1993). During their journeys, many of them visited Italy for practical reasons – being the place to leave the continent via sea – or often under the influence of the education received in other European countries such as France, Belgium, Germany, and the UK, where the memory of the Grand Tour was still alive. The paper illustrates a research project on Italian cultural itineraries whose main purpose is to identify types of travelers and travel modes, and map cultural itineraries covered by Chinese people in Italy mainly through the analysis of Chinese travel literature written in the first half of the twentieth century. Particular attention is paid to the close relationship between literature and movement from a Mobility Studies perspective (Merriman & Pearce 2017), and to the variety of accounts dealing with Italy, its culture and society as perceived and narrated by this generation of Chinese travelers. The possibilities of quantitative and qualitative analysis of such a research project are then illustrated through two case studies: the accounts of the coeval journeys to Italy by the former general Cai Tingkai 蔡廷楷 (1892-1968) and by the artist Huang Juesi 黄觉寺 (1901-1988) which respectively led to the publication of the Haiwai yinxiang ji 海外印象记 (Impressions from abroad, 1935) and Ouyou zhi shi欧游之什 (European writings, 1944)
Representation and symbolism of Huaixiang in Ji Xian’s nostalgic poetry
This paper aims to examine the representation and symbolism of huaixiang 懷鄉 (“homesickness”) in the nostalgic poetry of Ji Xian 紀弦 (1913-2013), with a specific focus on the symbolism of trees. Ji Xian was among the Chinese writers who relocated to Taiwan in the late 1940s. On the island, he played a pivotal role in the diffusion of modern poetry, advocating for a modernist movement through the publication of poetry magazines and the establishment of a Modernist School, which attracted more than a hundred poets. Ji Xian’s theories and poems mainly promoted the introduction of Modernism to Taiwan through the incorporation of Western literature and experimentation with new imagery, language and style. However, amidst Ji Xian’s writings, one also finds several nostalgic poems that reveal the poet’s distress upon leaving Mainland China and the alienation and loneliness experienced on his arrival on the island. His nostalgic poetry features new symbols often related to Chinese and Taiwanese vegetation. Trees of different species, such as the Acacia and Wutong trees, as well as the Betel palm, become carriers of his homesickness or self-referential symbols through which he expresses the hardship of settling into Taiwan and the complex process of establishing roots in a foreign land
Commemorating the PRC’s first artificial satellite: The contested legacy of “The East is Red-1” in today’s China
On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the launch of the first Chinese satellite—“The East is Red-1” [Dongfang hong-1东方红一号 (DFH-1)]—an exhibition dedicated to it was held online on the website of the National Museum of China. Such an exhibition signals the on-going nationalist revival of the historical memory associated with the DFH-1 in today’s China. However, having been built during a time that remains a kaleidoscope of divergent memories—that of the Cultural Revolution—the satellite’s legacy remains contested too. Indeed, in the Party’s official historiography, the satellite has been presented as a survivor from the “ten years of chaos,” mostly thanks to the commitment of the Chinese scientists and of the far-sighted leaders Zhou Enlai and Nie Rongzhen. Conversely, for some current “leftist” stances, the DFH-1 did not “survive” the Cultural Revolution—it was one of its greatest outcomes. Aiming to discuss such disputed memories, this essay will first outline a brief history of the DFH-1, analyzing how the activities of mass factions had a harmful impact on its construction. Then, the paper will focus on the ways in which the history of the DFH-1 has been framed by the Party’s official historiography and contested by other unofficial “leftist” accounts—mostly untranslated and ignored by Western scholars—for example those that appeared on the “red websites” such as Utopia (Wuyouzhixiang 乌有之乡)
