Vittoria e dissoluzione: Franco Fortini traduttore e interprete del Surrealismo
This essay reconstructs Franco Fortini’s complex theoretical, critical, and poetic trajectory in relation to Surrealism, highlighting the metamorphosis of his judgment over more than thirty years. Beginning with his early interest in the 1940s and 1950s—culminating in the 1959 anthology published by Garzanti—Fortini engaged with the French avant-garde movement in multiple ways, both as a critic and as a translator and poet, focusing above all on the relationship between poetry and politics and on the dissemination (and dissolution) of Surrealism within contemporary culture. In the 1970s, the shift in historical and cultural conditions led Fortini to formulate the concept of “mass Surrealism,” describing the transformation of Surrealism into a depoliticized collective imaginary absorbed by the society of the spectacle and by the mechanisms of consumption. In this new phase, the author developed a systematic critique of the notion of immediacy—psychic, linguistic, mnemonic—opposing to it the necessity of voluntary memory, mediated form, and conscious historical transmission. This stance is also reflected in his poetic production, which reuses Surrealist procedures—critically—to reveal their limits and move beyond them. The essay focuses in particular on texts such as L’ora delle basse opere, in which the visionary dimension is reabsorbed into a clear-sighted representation of bureaucratized horror. In his essays as well, Fortini arrives at an anti-Surrealist position that requires the abandonment even of masters such as Proust and Benjamin, in the name of a poetry grounded in conscious remembrance, in fidelity to the intergenerational pact, and in the ethical-political function of mediation. This essay reconstructs Franco Fortini’s complex theoretical, critical, and poetic trajectory in relation to Surrealism, highlighting the metamorphosis of his judgment over more than thirty years.
Between 1947 and 1974, the poet, composer, and playwright Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes played the role of a witness and chronicler of Dadaism and Surrealism on the airwaves of Radiodiffusion française. Alongside the numerous radio plays he created during this time, he hosted a wide range of cultural programs, a significant portion of which focused on these avant-garde movements or featured their representatives. The familiarity with which he addresses his former comrades and his way of questioning them about the Surrealist adventure reflect an intention to move beyond the quarrels and vicissitudes of the movement, in order to avoid corroborating the assumptions of obsolescence that burden it. This article seeks to define the posture adopted by the poet-memoirist at the microphone, and to observe how his talks and interviews fit into the historiographical process of Surrealism that was being constructed at the mid-century, following—or in reaction to—Maurice Nadeau’s History of Surrealism and the Interviews of Breton on Parinaud's microphone, in particular.Between 1947 and 1974, the poet, composer, and playwright Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes played the role of a witness and chronicler of Dadaism and Surrealism on the airwaves of Radiodiffusion française. The planetary man: Nature and visions in post-Christian cosmologies
Despite evidence of a biblical influence on the anthropocentric model of man’s dominance over nature, some trends of Christian thought dialogue with the contemporary philosophical and anthropological insights on nature and human relationship with it. Beside Pope Francis’ relevant contribution to the debate on climate change and anthropocentrism at large, and his call for integral ecology, other Christian experiences are of great interest in this regard. The article focuses on the work of an Italian Catholic thinker who anticipated some of the current theoretical questions about Anthropocene, and envisioned a novel post-Christian, generally post-religious and even post-cultural, cosmology which is worth to investigate. In L’uomo planetario (The Planetary Man) (1985), Ernesto Balducci presents a vision of human interdependence with nature, echoing themes later explored by posthumanist anthropology. Balducci advocates for transcending the human-centered view of nature as a separate object, and embracing a planetary consciousness, urging a re-evaluation of the human-nonhuman relationship. His perspective, which predates current onto-ecological debates, underscores the urgency of overcoming anthropocentrism and embracing a holistic approach to environmental stewardship. Balducci’s vision aligns astonishingly with Chakrabarty’s concept of the “planetary age” and resonates with his argument on overcoming sustainability toward planetary habitability. Revisiting Balducci’s insights, we can find inspiration in our constant search for new visionary visions of nature and our place within it
Rethinking sustainability: When social conformity and identity transform students’ consumption
In the face of intensifying environmental degradation and unsustainable consumption trends, fostering sustainable consumption behaviour among university students has become a strategic imperative for global sustainability agendas. Although environmental education is widely endorsed as a key driver of pro-environmental behaviour, its real-world impact often remains limited when psychosocial dynamics are overlooked. This study investigates how conformity, social environment, and self-concept function as moderating factors that enhance the impacts of environmental education on sustainable consumption behaviour. Employing a large-scale quantitative design, data were collected from students across 122 public universities in Indonesia using structured questionnaires. The model was tested using Structural Equation Modelling with Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) through WarpPLS. The findings reveal that these psychosocial factors significantly strengthen the link between environmental education and sustainable consumption, suggesting that social identity and peer context are critical enablers of behavioural change. The study offers a novel contribution to the sustainable consumption literature by integrating educational, social, and psychological constructs within a cohesive theoretical framework. It also provides actionable insights for higher education institutions and policymakers to design transformative educational interventions that cultivate social influence, internalized norms, and environmentally responsible identities among students
The Joint Research Centre of the EU Commission: An Ideological Dispositif for Whom? A Critical and Positive Discourse Analysis
This paper comprehensively examines the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) public communication and its practices when interacting with recruited external contributors, shedding light on its role as a Foucauldian dispositif in shaping political narratives and policy decisions. Drawing inspiration from the works of Gilbert and Wodak (2000), Rossetti di Valdalbero (2021), and building upon the insights of Hughes (2018), this study employs a blend of Critical and Positive Discourse Analysis, quantitative and qualitative multimodal corpus linguistics, and autoethnography (Chang 2008; Adams et al. 2015) to dissect the JRC's activities and their implications for decision-making processes within the EU. The paper particularly focuses on the political struggles among actors involved in decision-making processes and the impact on report authors.
Keywords: Joint Research Centre; dispositif; European Union; discourse analysis; multimodality; autoethnography; political communicatio
FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE DEATH OF CONTRACT: THE SCHRÖDINGER’S DEADALIVE CONTRACT’S PARADOX
This paper revisits Grant Gilmore’s The Death of Contract five decadesafter publication. Rather than resolving the tensions he exposed, it embraces thesuspension in which Gilmore left Contract Law, a juridical Schrödinger's box wheredoctrinal coherence and disintegration coexist. By resisting closure, this approachinvites readers to engage with Gilmore's paradoxes as if they remain ever-present.The contradictions within the Restatement (Second) of Contracts were never resolved, and the proliferation of sub-disciplines meant to coexist with the general contracttheory has only obscured the deeper reality: that Private Law is a terrain ofirreconcilable tensions. If Contract Law retains any centrality, it is preciselybecause it exposes—rather than reconciles—these structural contradictions, serving as the fault line along which the illusions of coherence in Private Lawuntangle
