Issue n. 36 (2025) of RSAJournal features a Special Section on reproductive justice in the United States, edited by Cristina Di Maio and Fulvia Sarnelli. Framed by the post-Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) landscape, the section examines not only legal and healthcare repercussions but also the cultural and symbolic dimensions of this pivotal shift, from pronatalist rhetoric to popular culture as an ideological battleground. Drawing on the reproductive justice framework developed by African American activists in the 1990s, the opening interview with Loretta Ross – co-author of one of the movement’s foundational texts – provides the interpretive key to the section, positioning popular culture as a strategic space for resistance and the imagination of alternative futures. The contributions explore diverse genres and media: historical fiction on forced sterilization, a bestselling novel prompting a redefinition of life and autonomy, screen portrayals of breastfeeding, the evolution of the teenabortion road trip movie, male stand-up comedy’s engagement with abortion, and political strategies to involve men in reproductive rights debates.
The Articles Section presents essays on Louis Adamic’s influence on Carlos Bulosan’s immigrant autobiography (Enrico Mariani), the global ramifications of the Thirteenth Amendment’s 160th anniversary (Don H. Doyle), and Henry Charles Carey’s political economy and gender hierarchies (Matteo Rossi).
The Forum Section, edited by Alessandra Bitumi and Matteo Pretelli, marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Seven leading historians reassess the war’s memory, global impact, and contested legacies, questioning the durability of the post-1945 liberal order amid current geopolitical shifts.
The First Editions Section, edited by Tess Chakkalakal, introduces William Belmont Parker’s reader’s report on Charles W. Chesnutt’s The Marrow of Tradition (1901), contextualizing its historical, literary, and editorial significance in confronting Jim Crow’s color line. This is the first digital-only issue of RSAJournal, now entirely Open Access and indexed in major academic databases
Lo spettatore pensa, lo spettatore fa: David Bordwell e la costruzione dei Film Studies contemporanei
The article analyzes David Bordwell’s contribution to contemporary film studies, emphasizing the importance of the viewer’s active role in the perception and interpretation process of film. Starting in the 1980s, Bordwell shifted the focus from psychoanalysis to cognitive sciences, proposing an empirical analysis of cinematic narration that considers the mental dynamics of viewers. To this end, he highlighted how the viewer is not merely a passive receiver, but an active formulator of hypotheses and inferences. The discussion also includes critiques and debates that occurred between Bordwell and other scholars, such as Dudley Andrew and Warren Buckland, underscoring the tensions between analytical approaches and more traditional theories. Additionally, it touches on the evolution of embodied cognition and the link between neuroscience and cinematic experience, suggesting a continuous relevance of Bordwell’s thinking in the current context of film studies

The vastness and the mystery of the sea fascinated the Catalan poet Joan Vinyoli (1914-1984) to such an extent that he made it one of the most present and interpretatively diverse elements in his poetry. Even though this is widely mentioned by scholars, there is no detailed analysis of the evolution of sea and seaside throughout the entirety of his poetry. Through a close and comparative reading of Vinyoli’s poems that include references to coastal landscape elements, we trace the process of symbolization and connotation experienced by certain states of the sea and elements integrated into it
Ana María Matute would first articulate and explore childhood vulnerability and existential dislocation within the adult world in her anthology of micro stories entitled Los niños tontos [The Foolish Children]. These themes would become central to much of her later work. In order to deal with their loneliness and helplessness, Matute’s tiny protagonists escape to imaginary worlds, a strategy that invariably leads to a deathly outcome. Here we will analyse “Mar” [“Sea”], the final story in Los niños tontos. We propose that the terrible illness that affects the little boy at the centre of the story can be read as illustrative of the lack of protection and isolation characteristic of Matute’s young characters, while his escape into the imaginary world of the sea leads to his suicide beneath the waves –an action in keeping with a pattern of fatal outcomes established within the collection of brief fictions

Quand’eu soby nas torres sobe’lo mar (B708, fol. 155r; V309, fol. 50v; K fol.
With two compositions, formally cantigas de amigo but with elements foreign to the genre, the Portuguese troubadour Don Gonçal’Eanes do Vinhal forms part of the so-called “Don Enrique cycle”. Both cantigas are related by explanatory headings and deal with the infante Don Enrique, who is insinuated to be the lover of Queen Joan of Ponthieu, wife of Fernando III of Castile, his stepmother. The younger brother of Alfonso X is undoubtedly one of the most fabulous and exciting characters in the Galician-Portuguese lyrical corpus. I analyze as belonging to the cycle one other cantiga by the troubadour do Vinhal, Quand’eu soby nas torres sobe’lo mar, and I propose a historical reading of this piece and its connection with the two aforementioned compositions.
The rights of invisible children: challenges and consequences of nonregistration of births in Tanzania
This paper highlights the importance of birth registration in Tanzania, linking it to legal identity, access to essential rights, and protection from exploitation. Despite the various international frameworks and instruments, low registration still persists due to socio-cultural and national legal challenges. This study attempts to explore local attitudes, the importance of extra-legal actors and technological interventions through a fieldwork in Tanzania, during an internship at the Embassy of Italy. It underscores the need for holistic approaches, integrating local customs, government collaboration, and innovative solutions to ensure access to birth registration and strengthen children’s rights and societal inclusion
Cross-Country Comparison of Zakat Management Model for Economic Resilience: Insights from Indonesia and Malaysia
The negative economic growth observed in Indonesia and Malaysia has led to the classification of both nations as experiencing an economic recession. This situation arises from a reduction in total household expenditure, despite an increase in zakat collection. The management of zakat in Indonesia and Malaysia, in light of the economic recession, is implemented through various programs. This research aims to conduct a comparative examination of zakat management in Indonesia and Malaysia during economic downturns, with a particular emphasis on policy responses to the recession triggered by COVID-19. Subsequently, this investigation employs a qualitative descriptive methodology grounded in secondary data sourced from zakat institutions, governmental reports, and scholarly literature. The findings elucidate four notable distinctions in zakat management between Indonesia and Malaysia: the focus on resource allocation, the prioritization of beneficiaries, the sustainability of impact, and the originality of programs. Indonesia focuses on directing zakat towards economic initiatives, whereas Malaysia places greater importance on its distribution for consumptive purposes. Indonesia has delineated six priority clusters of mustahik affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, whereas Malaysia has categorized only three priority clusters of mustahik. Malaysia employs a unique methodology, characterized by a thorough focus on distributing consumptive zakat to meet pressing household needs. The execution of the program is expected to enhance overall household consumption, thereby aiding in the recovery from economic recession by restoring public purchasing power. This study advances the framework for zakat distribution, contributing to informed decision-making in the realm of policy development during economic crises. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of the allocation of zakat funds as a mechanism for social safety and economic resilience, highlighting exemplary practices from Indonesia and Malaysia, two leading Muslim-majority countries
