The R.I.C.O. Act: America\u27s Approach Against the Mafia and Corporate Crime

    Get PDF
A full explanation of how the federal government has made provisions to take down the Mafia that can and have been used against corporate crime through something known as the R.I.C.O. Act of 1970, and how the courts have failed to interpret the laws that were developed with the intent to neutralize both crime syndicates and corporate crimes

    Recovery Experiences During COVID-19

    Get PDF
People with substance use disorder are a particularly at risk population who experienced greater hardships during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as previous literature revealed. The present study aims to explore the experiences of individuals with substance use disorder accessing recovery support services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Self-report survey data was collected from 144 participants who self-identified as having substance use disorder and engaged in recovery support services since COVID-19 began. Thematic analysis was used to analyze survey data and 4 main themes were identified: (1) Shifting terrains in recovery, (2) Connecting through a screen, (3) Heightened hardships, and (4) Grow through what you go through. Participants experienced greater challenges during the pandemic related to accessing virtual substance use support services, exacerbated mental health symptoms, and loss of relationships, which often led to decreased motivation for recovery. In the face of adversity, however, a number of participants expressed cultivating resilience and healthy coping strategies, leading some to derive a newfound sense of purpose in recovery. Future research should explore the present role of virtual services in recovery treatment and mental health conditions following the pandemic

Analysis of Laminar Flow Patterns in Milifluidic Devices

    Get PDF
This research centers around a millifluidic device designed for the analysis of flowing chemical reactions that may happen too quickly to be analyzed by traditional spectroscopic methods. The device works by combining two simple concepts: fluid flows a certain distance over time and chemical reactions progress over time. Combining these allows for the correlation of reaction progress and distance through the device. Since the flow within the device is laminar, there is friction along the walls of the channel that creates a flow profile that elongates over time. The details of the flow were previously unknown but are necessary if the device is to be used for future chemical kinetics research. This paper studies the nature of the flow by creating a simulation and an experiment to measure the laminar flow head. A spectroscopy calculator program was created to accompany the device that allows for an accurate prediction of spectral data to be collected using the device. The work presented here will be used to guide future experiment choices for these millifulidic devices

Elevating our Voices: An Exploration and Demonstration of Modern Feminist Poetry

    Get PDF
This paper is formatted with several pages of background information on two poets, Rupi Kaur and Kim Addonizio, who have greatly contributed to modern feminist poetry within the past decade or two. This background will serve as a supportive feature for my portfolio, the main goal of this experience. The themes of Addonizio and Kaur and their poetic techniques inspire my collection of unique poetry. These poems represent the ups and many downs already lived by a twenty-two-year-old woman just trying to find her place in this beautiful, yet dark and twisted world

Marketing Through Microcultures on Social Media: An Examination of BookTok and Independent Bookstores

    Get PDF
This thesis explores the role of microcultures in social media marketing, by focusing on the BookTok microculture and its significant role in the marketing strategies of independent bookstores. The research includes an examination of microcultures and their impact on businesses, the effectiveness of the key social media marketing tactics used on TikTok, what BookTok is, how independent bookstores engage with BookTok, and an interview with an independent bookstore on their uses of BookTok

The Effect of Gratitude and Compassion on Persuasion Processing

    Get PDF
The present study investigated the relationship between two positive emotions (gratitude and compassion) and persuasion susceptibility. Participants were randomly assigned to be induced to feel gratitude or compassion and read either strong or weak arguments. Participants then rated how favorable they found the arguments. We hypothesized that participants feeling gratitude would be more easily persuaded than those feeling compassion, particularly in the weak argument condition. The hypotheses were not supported. In the strong argument condition, the gratitude and compassion groups were equally persuaded. In the weak argument condition, the compassion group was more persuaded than the gratitude group, though not significantly. Multiple limitations are addressed. The manipulation check indicated that the induction procedure for compassion was problematic. In addition, the arguments were perceived more negatively in the present study than in past studies. Future research should revise the induction procedure, include additional emotions, and pilot the use of less controversial arguments

Breakfast is the Most Important Meal of the Day: An Investigation of the Levels of Cadmium in Breakfast Cereal

    Get PDF
Cadmium (Cd) is a transition metal that offers no nutritional value to human beings. Humans’ main exposure to Cd is through consumption. Cd is extremely soluble, leading to plants readily absorbing it through contaminated water. Plants containing the absorbed Cd are consumed, and the metal accumulates in the body and is toxic. Effects of Cd in the body include renal tubular damage, pulmonary emphysema, epigenetic changes, and carcinogenesis. Previous studies have looked at Cd in cereal based products, and their results revealed low, varied amounts of Cd in the samples. However, most of these studies were performed in Asian countries. This leaves a gap in data for foods in the United States. This study looks at three different rice cereal brands from grocery stores in the Worcester, MA area. In a 2 g sample, the results ranged from 0.04 ± 0.03 μg in Rice Chex (General Mills), 0.06 ± 0.04 μg in Signature Select’s Rice Pockets (Shaws), and 0.09 ± 0.06 μg in Food Club’s Rice Squares (Big Y). These results were all above the LOD of 0.015 μg. The amounts of Cd found were comparable with the amounts found in previous literature. Since the levels of Cd were below the TWI of 2.5 μg/kg body weight, it can be concluded that the amount of Cd in these brands do not pose a health risk

Project-Based Learning in the Mathematics Classroom

    Get PDF
The literature is saturated with examples of project-based learning (PBL) in other fields (e.g. science, nursing). However, examples of PBL that are specific to mathematics are limited. Furthermore, often mathematics projects or problems were mislabeled as PBL when in fact they are ProbBL. Herein, I will expose and correct the misapplication of PBL; at the same time, I will explore its many benefits, including the factors that determine its success. I provide examples of PBL in mathematics. Based on the literature review findings, I have developed a mathematics unit that implements PBL using the necessary factors. The unit I wrote should give mathematics teachers a clear conception of the term PBL and provide clear guidelines on how to implement PBL more efficiently in their classrooms
