Comparison of the Efficacy of Mirror Therapy and Pharmaceuticals for the Treatment of Phantom Limb Pain

    Get PDF
While there are other treatments that have shown a reduction in phantom limb pain (PLP), such as acupuncture, mirror therapy and pharmaceuticals were focused on in this literature review. Mirror therapy is one of the most common treatments for PLP, and has shown to consistently cause a decrease in PLP. Morphine is widely prescribed and used for the treatment of pain, and studies have shown its possible efficacy for the treatment of PLP. Gabapentin is another pharmaceutical often used for the treatment of epilepsy and neuropathic pain, and has recently been studied in regards to the treatment of PLP. While there are other pharmaceuticals that have been used for the treatment of PLP, such as ketamine and lidocaine, morphine and gabapentin were examined in this literature review (Mayo Clinic, 2021). Studies were examined from the 1990s through 2021, and used the Visual Analogue Scale and the Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire. The studies were compared based on the trends reported for the decrease of PLP, as well as the percent of participants that reported a decrease in PLP

Mediators Between Adversity and Well-Being of College Students

    Get PDF
Although the concurrent link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and both physical and mental health is established, little is known about the mechanisms that explain it. We investigated the relationship between ACEs and well-being and the mediating roles of coping, executive function (EF), and cognitive failure in a non-clinical sample of college students. Participants (N = 194) completed behavioral measures and self-reports. More than half of the sample had at least one ACE. Correlational and mediational analyses examined the relationships between ACEs, college adaptation, psychopathology, substance use, coping, and cognitive failure. ACEs did not correlate with indices of EF or cognitive failure, but there was a positive relationship between cognitive failure and negative coping. ACEs positively correlated with college adaptation, psychopathology, and substance abuse. There was a full mediation from ACE via negative coping and cognitive failure for college adaptation and psychopathology and via negative coping for alcohol and drug use. ACEs relate with reliance on negative coping which in turn predicts directly and indirectly, through cognitive failure, poor adaptation and heightened symptomatology for psychopathology

Exploration of the Experiences and Perceptions of Club Athletes Using Mindfulness and Meditation Techniques During Their Basketball Season

    Get PDF
Literature reveals that there is a direct effect of mindfulness and meditation on athletes at various levels in their career. The present study aims to explore the experience and perceptions of mindfulness and meditation on female collegiate club basketball players. A sample of 8 undergraduates at Assumption University completed daily guided mindfulness and meditation sessions via the Smiling Mind application. Simultaneously, they wrote journal entries expressing their thoughts. Participants were interviewed at the conclusion of the study. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data from the interviews and the journal entries finding two major themes, (1) mindful expressions and (2) barriers to engagement. For future research, a larger sample size with athletes playing at the collegiate varsity level should be used to ensure that the present study is representative of the population

Hitting It Out of the Park: How Major League Baseball Changed the Game by Not Changing Anything at All

In this paper, I will examine the integration of baseball into American culture and statistics’ involvement in that process. This paper will paint a clear picture of the emergence and acceptance of analytics in baseball through a gradual transformation of the style of play spanning the past few decades in the form of increased strikeouts, homeruns, and extra-base hits. Furthermore, this paper will explore the polarizing implications of analytical baseball on and off the field. One of the main questions that this paper will explore is whether or not MLB can go too far with its statistic-minded initiative (if it has not already)

An Analysis of Educational Strategies Suited for Students with ASD

    Get PDF
This paper will analyze several reasons why traditional educational practices are not well suited for students with ASD, and will explore multiple promising areas of research on mathematical education for these students. The project has several goals, which will be described in more detail throughout the rest of this paper. One such goal is to create a web resource for teachers that is designed to be suited towards students with ASD. The website will contain an overview of my research and analysis, as well as access to sample lesson plans. The purpose of the website is to bridge a gap between research and implementation by making the dense and long research papers accessible to a wider audience and to help educators access and feel able and inspired to actually implement these concepts in their classrooms
