Essentially Doomed: How the COVID-19 Pandemic Has Impacted the American Restaurant Industry
COVID-19 appeared unpredictably in late 2019 and developed into the most catastrophic global outbreak of the last century over the course of the next three years. The highly contagious virus infected hundreds of millions of people worldwide and was responsible for the death of millions. Beyond the devastating health impact the virus had on the world, pandemic related shutdowns resulted in massive economic consequences. Social distancing measures resulted in months long shutdowns and restrictions for businesses throughout the United States, resulting in massive revenue and employment losses. Of specific industries heavily impacted by the pandemic in the United States, the American restaurant industry was devastated by the pandemic and its shutdowns. Despite being among America’s largest industries by employment and being impacted by COVID-19 significantly worse than most other industries, three years later the restaurant industry is still fighting to recover. This paper is intended to answer the question of what the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was on the American restaurant industry. This question will be further examined as 3 sub-questions; these questions are: 1. How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact the American restaurant industry? 2. How were independent restaurants impacted by the pandemic in comparison to restaurant chains? 3. How did the pandemic change the future of the restaurant industry
Architecture in Berlin: Developing a New German Identity During the Weimar Republic
In my honors thesis project, I will be analyzing architectural developments in Berlin from the late nineteenth century and up until the end of the Weimar Republic. I will analyze why such developments occurred and will explain the historical background of German society to better explain to uninformed readers. Some of the new architectural styles and forms I will be discussing include expressionism and naturalism, and the prominent architects whose works will be most thoroughly analyzed include Erich Mendelsohn, Bruno Taut, and Walter Gropius, all who helped to lead the search in finding new architectural styles. I’ve chosen these three individuals in particular as I view their works in Berlin to best capture new architectural developments in the city and how they clearly reflect social upheaval taking place in German society
Emerson Remained My Master : The Influence of Ralph Waldo Emerson on Louisa May Alcott\u27s Thought and Writing in \u3cem\u3eLittle Women\u3c/em\u3e
In this thesis, I will argue that Little Women was heavily influenced by Alcott’s mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson’s influence impacted Alcott’s life and writing in two main ways. First, growing up in Concord, surrounded by the influence of well-known Transcendentalist writers and under the mentorship of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Alcott was heavily influenced by his work and the ideals of the transcendentalist movement. The ideas of Transcendentalism that Emerson made popular and wrote about in his pieces such as “Nature” and speeches like “Women” and “The American Scholar” appear in Little Women. Second, Alcott was also heavily influenced by Emerson’s writing style, predominantly from his poetry, which appears in her writing in the novel. Little Women was the best performing work of Alcott’s career after she had spent many years studying under Emerson. The novel was ahead of its time in its representation of women and feminism based on Emerson’s ideals that Alcott put into her own words, and these themes continue to stay relevant today. In what follows, I will explore both types of influence
Neurological Abnormalities Following a Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Literature Review
Studies collectively reviewing hundreds of case studies have revealed that metal-on-metal hip implants have been failing in the body by degrading at the connection between the ball on the femur and the socket in the hip. In many older adults, these surgeries have been used to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatic disorders, trauma, bone tumors, etc., but there are various adverse side effects that come with a major surgery, as with any type of surgery. For a total hip arthroplasty, or THA, the risk of necrosis, pseudotumors and generalized pain in the surgical area are common side effects, but providers often do not note the risk of implant failure and how that impacts the body. An adverse side effect that is not as well known, but just as serious, is the physiological changes that occur in the brain to mimic dementia symptoms. Patients presenting with dementia symptoms have recently been misdiagnosed because providers would not think to run a heavy metal panel to investigate if the hip implants are the cause of the symptoms. This literature review will outline the long-term effects of metal hip implants, how patients should be aware of the possibilities presented by metal toxicity, less known adverse manifestations of metal accumulation in the bloodstream, and the subsequent neurological symptoms
The Causes and Ramifications of the Lack of Women in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Fields
Women consist of only 27% of workers within the STEM fields while men make up the remaining 73% (Martinez). Several causes contribute to this drastic difference, with one of the main reasons being the lack of confidence that women have in these subject areas. Their lack of confidence often begins in the elementary and middle school grades as a result of teacher bias, fixed mindsets, and a lack of role models, causing young girls to shy away from STEM and turn toward other interests. However, there are ways to fix this problem and if teachers are willing to put the energy into it, classrooms can become places that encourage young girls to pursue STEM careers later in life, rather than discourage them
Ever Ancient Ever New, Liturgical Development at Vatican II: October 1963 (Oh what a Council!)
The primary focus of this thesis will be liturgy, specifically how the liturgical movement of the twentieth century influenced the writings of the Council document Sacrosanctum concilium and how the document was implemented after the Second Vatican Council
A Push for Historical Thinking in Elementary History Instruction
While there is research in support of historical thinking in the elementary curriculum, the results vary and this raises the question, how capable are elementary students in engaging in historical thinking? I plan to answer this question by looking at examples of historical thinking in elementary students through their experiences with a unit plan I develop with a central focus on historical inquiry. My goal is to develop a 4-day unit plan for 4th graders on Westward 4 Expansion using the MA Curriculum Frameworks for 4th grade content and NCSS historical thinking skills. I will garner feedback from Worcester area teachers to support the revision of my unit. I will then teach my lessons with elementary students to learn how effective the lessons were in supporting the development of historical thinking in elementary students. There is currently a lack of historical thinking skills being taught in elementary curriculum. This study is important because students may be capable of more critical thinking skills than is typically expected. Due to the necessity of these skills, the earlier students can learn the more successful they will be making claims, recognizing historical perspective, and deeply inquiring into whose story is told in a history and whose is missing
Implicit Racial Bias in Healthcare: A Concept Analysis and Call to Action
For students pursuing a nursing degree, exposure to implicit bias during their educational program is as concerning as the lack of training to acknowledge and conquer the development of implicit bias. Both facets can root negative attitudes and behaviors in the student nurse that will be carried into their practice throughout the healthcare system. It is a professional obligation for the registered nurse to be aware of implicit bias and understand its strong connection to increased risk of mortality, health complications, and other adverse health outcomes, especially in racial minority patient populations (Maina et al., 2018). This thesis contains a concept analysis of implicit racial bias, using the method described by Walker and Avant (2005). The definition of implicit racial bias, including its attributes and characteristics will be examined. Example cases are provided to further clarify the concept and a comprehensive review of the Implicit Associate Test [IAT] (Moon, 2011) is explored as a means for providing an operational definition and empirical referent. Understanding how implicit racial bias negatively affects interactions across the healthcare continuum is emphasized, with a concluding recommendation for nursing education to take necessary steps in the effort to prevent implicit racial bias attitudes and behaviors in the nursing profession
The Factors Affecting Racial Disparities in the Juvenile Justice System
The neglect of the best interests of minority youth is a problem running rampant in the United States juvenile justice system. In order to address this problem, the factors influencing why racial disparities exist within the juvenile justice system must be known, so that they can eventually be diminished. This thesis will first evaluate prior research on the factors influencing such racial disparities. Once previously discovered factors have been identified and discussed, additional research will be conducted to examine what attempts are currently being made in jurisdictions throughout the country to reduce the influence of these factors in how youth of color are processed through the juvenile justice system, and whether such attempts have proven successful thus far. Finally, this thesis will analyze additional proposals put forward by juvenile justice scholars, not yet enacted, to discuss both their potential merits and deficiencies if they were to be enacted in jurisdictions throughout the country moving forward
Womanhood in Light of the Theology of the Body
This thesis will focus specifically on the sacramental meaning of a woman’s body
