Seasonal Prevalence of \u3cem\u3eBatrachochytrium dendrobatidis\u3c/em\u3e in Central Massachusetts \u3cem\u3eLithobates catesbeianus\u3c/em\u3e Tadpoles
Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is the etiological agent of chytridiomycosis, a fungal disease that some experts believe will lead to the extinction of nearly half of the amphibian species on this planet. Limited research has been conducted on chytridiomycosis in the Northeast United States, and most of it has primarily focused on examining Bd in different species of amphibians. In this study, we examine the presence of Bd in one species, Lithobates catesbeianus, the American Bullfrog, which has natural resistance to the pathogenic effect of Bd. Examining different regions of the country, age of L. catesbeianus, and season may help scientists determine if environmental factors and developmental factors contribute to the spread of chytridiomycosis. This research project studied the prevalence of Bd in American bullfrog tadpoles at three locations in Central Massachusetts and examined if there is seasonal and spatial variation between Bd infection in the tadpoles. Tadpoles were swabbed during May and September 2018 and the swabs were analyzed using quantitative PCR. Positive samples were found in all three locations. Out of 136 samples, 33 were positive for Bd (24.3%). Twenty-six positive samples were collected during the Spring, and 7 were collected in the Fall. The variation in the density of tadpoles could lead to the significant difference between Bd prevalence in the Spring versus the Fall. Seasonal temperatures and the lifecycle of Bd could also have played a role in the variation and could be more specifically accounted for in future studies
They Were There for People Who Needed Them : Student Attitudes Toward the Use of Trigger Warnings in Victimology Classrooms
Over the last five years, vigorous debate has been waged about the purpose, use, and impact of trigger warnings in courses offered at institutions of higher education. This debate has been largely uninformed by research findings. This study fills this gap using quantitative and qualitative data collected via surveys in a large undergraduate victimology course to explore student attitudes toward trigger warnings. Findings revealed considerable, but nuanced support for trigger warning use in victimology courses. Support does not appear to differ between crime victims and non-victims; support is higher among females than males. These findings underscore that universal decisions mandating or advocating for or against the use of trigger warnings are premature. Further study is needed with a diverse range of samples to gain a fuller picture of student attitudes about trigger warnings as well as to assess any impact of trigger warnings use on student behavior and learning
Kids, Caregivers, and Cartoons: The Impact of Licensed Characters on Food Choices and Consumption
This research examines effects of on-package licensed characters on children’s and caregivers’ choices of healthy and indulgent food and children’s consumption amount. The authors propose that food liking exerts the greatest influence on children’s choices and consumption, such that the impact of on-package characters will be limited to choices between equally liked options. Caregivers’ choices are primarily influenced by their food goals for their children; thus, the impact of characters will likewise be limited to caregivers’ within-category choices. Two experiments show that a character influences children’s choices between two same-category options but not between indulgent and healthier options. A third experiment reveals that food liking influences amount consumed, while the presence of a character influences neither amount consumed nor food liking. Two additional experiments show that characters influence caregivers’ choice between the same foods, but not between different food types or intention to purchase a food. The expanded framework for the effects of licensed characters—taking into account choice versus consumption, children versus caregivers, and healthy versus unhealthy foods—enhances understanding for consumers, practitioners, and policy makers
The Immigration Crisis in Italy: A Convergence of Crises and What it Means for Globalization
This paper is an analysis of what is deemed the “immigration crisis” in Europe as it affects the country of Italy. Originally, I had theorized that the effects of the immigration crisis on Italy were due solely to the failings of the Schengen Agreement. However, upon further research, I concluded the problems of the Schengen are only one part of a larger picture that finds its beginnings in the economic problems of Italy. The worldwide economic crisis of 2008 and the actions of the European Central Bank in the wake of the crisis created a separation in the European Union between larger central countries such as Germany and France, and smaller border countries such as Italy and Greece. The feelings of abandonment and alienization that were sparked in Italy during this time began the country’s disillusionment with the European Union, and these feelings were only exacerbated when the waves of immigrants began to pour in in 2015, and Schengen area countries began to close their internal borders and trap the immigrants and asylum-seekers in Italy, thus worsening the economic, social, and political problems that the country was already facing. In addition, my research prompted me to draw the conclusion that the underlying problem is the failure of the globalization that is seen in the European Union. Therefore, this paper theorizes that the current immigration crisis is not a crisis in and of itself, but provided the stimuli needed to create a crisis from the pre-existing problems in Italy and in the European Union

Order, Please! Uncertainty in the Ordinal-Level Classification of Chlorophyceae
Background. Chlorophyceae is one of three most species-rich green algal classes and also the only class in core Chlorophyta whose monophyly remains uncontested as gene and taxon sampling improves. However, some key relationships within Chlorophyceae are less clear-cut and warrant further investigation. The present study combined genome-scale chloroplast data and rich sampling in an attempt to resolve the ordinal classification in Chlorophyceae. The traditional division into Sphaeropleales and Volvocales (SV), and a clade containing Oedogoniales, Chaetopeltidales, and Chaetophorales (OCC) was of particular interest with the addition of deeply branching members of these groups, as well as the placement of several incertae sedis taxa.
Methods. We sequenced 18 chloroplast genomes across Chlorophyceae to compile a data set of 58 protein-coding genes of a total of 68 chlorophycean taxa. We analyzed the concatenated nucleotide and amino acid datasets in the Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood frameworks, supplemented by analyses to examine potential discordant signal among genes. We also examined gene presence and absence data across Chlorophyceae.
Results. Concatenated analyses yielded at least two well-supported phylogenies: nucleotide data supported the traditional classification with the inclusion of the enigmatic Treubarinia into Sphaeropleales sensu lato. However, amino acid data yielded equally strong support for Sphaeropleaceae as sister to Volvocales, with the rest of the taxa traditionally classified in Sphaeropleales in a separate clade, and Treubarinia as sister to all of the above. Single-gene and other supplementary analyses indicated that the data have low phylogenetic signal at these critical nodes. Major clades were supported by genomic structural features such as gene losses and trans-spliced intron insertions in the plastome.
Discussion. While the sequence and gene order data support the deep split between the SV and OCC lineages, multiple phylogenetic hypotheses are possible for Sphaeropleales s.l. Given this uncertainty as well as the higher-taxonomic disorder seen in other algal groups, dwelling on well-defined, strongly supported Linnaean orders is not currently practical in Chlorophyceae and a less formal clade system may be more useful in the foreseeable future. For example, we identify two strongly and unequivocally supported clades: Treubarinia and Scenedesminia, as well as other smaller groups that could serve a practical purpose as named clades. This system does not preclude future establishment of new orders, or emendment of the current ordinal classification if new data support such conclusions
