Classification and authentication of quinoa, amaranth, and wheat flour mixtures by GC-MS combined with intelligent sensors
Quinoa and amaranth are gaining recognition as nutritious alternatives to traditional cereals, highlighting the need for reliable methods to authenticate their products. This study examined the volatile profiles of quinoa, amaranth, and wheat flours using GC-MS and an E-nose device. Twenty-four volatile compounds were identified, including limonene, 1R-α-pinene, and L-β-pinene, which were exclusive to pseudocereal flours, and hexanal, abundant in wheat flour as an oxidation indicator. The E-nose achieved 89.7 % accuracy in discriminating between quinoa, amaranth, and wheat flours and effectively separated double and triple mixtures. A PLS model revealed a strong correlation between E-nose data and concentrations of limonene, α-pinene, and β-pinene (R2CV = 0.94–0.95). a la filosofía, a la teología, a la mística,
a la psicología, a la medicina y a la música.
Sin embargo, fue silenciada tanto
por algunos sectores de la Iglesia como
por el mundo académico hasta que, en
1998 y a propósito de la conmemoración
de los 900 años de su nacimiento,
se dieron a nivel mundial toda una serie
de celebraciones, congresos, seminarios,
publicaciones y discografía. En 2012 el
papa Benedicto XVI la canonizó y declaró
doctora de la Iglesia. Las publicaciones
sobre la filósofa alemana son muy
numerosas y lo que este artículo pretende
demostrar es que Hildegarda de Binguen
puede ser considerada una filósofa del
oído al igual que otras pensadoras como

Assessing the effectiveness of seaweed transplants in reflecting seawater pollution levels
Seaweed transplants have been widely used to monitor coastal marine pollution, yet their effectiveness in reflecting seawater elemental concentrations remains uncertain. This study investigated the relationship between elemental concentrations in Fucus vesiculosus transplants (both fresh and dried) and seawater samples representative of the transplants’ exposure period collected using autosamplers. The transplants were deployed across 22 coastal sites in northwest Spain over 14 days. No significant correlations were found between seawater elemental concentrations and those in transplants for any element. Similarly, seawater physicochemical properties (pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and temperature) and the pre-exposure concentrations in transplants had minimal influence on post-exposure levels. Elemental concentrations in native seaweeds at the exposure sites were not correlated with those in transplants (except for Zn in the fresh transplants) and did not reflect seawater concentrations either. These findings highlight that element concentrations in seaweed do not follow a straightforward linear relationship between exposure and tissue concentrations. Instead, they result from a complex interplay of various, yet unknown environmental factors that influence element bioavailability in the water and the physicochemical properties of the seaweed. A multi-approach study of PrimPol and RPA functional interaction

These situations are altogether named replication stress (RS). One of the mechanisms to deal with RS is mediated by PrimPol, the second primase identified in human cells, which generates short DNA primers ahead of replisome blocks to facilitate reinitiation of DNA synthesis. Interstrand crosslinks (ICLs) are one of the most toxic DNA lesions because they stall not only the DNA polymerases but also the CMG helicase. PrimPol activity has been implicated on the ICL traverse reaction, a mechanism that allows ICL bypass during DNA replication.
Although beneficial upon RS, PrimPol activity must be regulated since unrestrained repriming may cause genome instability. In this Thesis we have investigated several molecular mechanisms that control PrimPol function, with a special focus on its main interacting factor, replication protein A (RPA).
We have optimized an immunofluorescence-based approach to study PrimPol association to ICLs that has allowed us to demonstrate that RPA is strictly required for PrimPol association to ICL-containing DNA. PrimPol interacts with other proteins involved in ICL traverse, which are dispensable for its binding to the proximity of these lesions but might facilitate efficient repriming.
We have also identified that PrimPol is regulated by phosphorylation. In addition to the already described post-translational modification of Ser255, we have found that PrimPol is phosphorylated on Ser499, an amino acid located in the RPA Binding Domain (RBD). Our data suggests that phosphorylation of Ser499 may regulate the stability of PrimPol-RPA interaction and consequently PrimPol repriming efficiency.
We have attempted to generate high-resolution 3D models of PrimPol structure by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) either alone or in complex with RPA and ssDNA. This work has been done in collaboration with the team led by Dr. Rafael Fernández-Leiro (Structural Biology Program, CNIO). We have set up all the necessary steps and obtained high quality grids that have already been imaged at FEI Titan Krios microscope. We are now processing the images to obtain the 3D models of the proteins.
Finally, in collaboration with Dr. Gheorghe Chistol (Stanford University, USA) we have adapted a single-molecule assay to visualize the association of fluorescently-labelled PrimPol to DNA in real time. This new technical approach will facilitate the molecular characterization of those processes requiring PrimPol activity and the study of PrimPol dependence on RPA for ssDNA binding and repriming.
In summary, the work performed in this Thesis provides new insights into the several layers of PrimPol regulation. We have shown that post-translational modifications modulate its activity and we have reinforced the notion that RPA is the main partner and a key regulator of PrimPol activity in vivo. Gaps in the ideal of equality of opportunity in education
equality of opportunity is an ambiguous concept. To remove its ambiguity, the chapter identifies three gaps that need filling: equality among whom, opportunities for what, and when in people’s lives. Gap 1 is among whom should opportunities be equal. The main response explored is that opportunities should be equal among the similarly talented, regardless of their socioeconomic background. The chapter examines four
reasons in its support. It explains why the so-called formal equality of opportunity, consisting of the principles of non-discrimination and merit, is important but incomplete. Real or effective equality of opportunity also requires a level playing field. This egalitarian claim finds a limit in the family: the chapter mentions various reasons for respecting certain parental prerogatives over children’s education despite their inegalitarian effects. Gap 2 of the ideal of equality of opportunity is its currency: what are
opportunities for? The chapter offers some guidance to respond. It considers a key distinction between positional and non-positional goods of education. Gap 3 is when in life opportunities should be equal. One response is that people should enjoy equal opportunities at the point in life from which they are held responsible for their choices. Nonetheless, the chapter offers some reasons to mitigate the cumulative effects of past choices and to secure adequate opportunities throughout people’s lives. Finally, the
chapter warns of the risk of hiding behind equality of opportunity to whitewash or legitimize an unduly competitive society. Reasons against such competitiveness are explained, and ways to reduce it are suggeste
The usefulness of point-of-care ultrasound in the diagnosis of erythema nodosum: A case report
Point-of-care ultrasound is a useful tool in enhancing physical exam. It is a relatively new imaging technique for dermatological diagnosis, ofering a rapid, non-invasive, and easily accessible evaluation in a wide variety of clinical scenarios. We present the case of a 41-year-old male with a history of dyslipidemia, Gilbert’s syndrome, and psoriasis. He presented with erythema, warmth, and pain in his lower limbs. Despite initial antibiotic treatments, he showed no improvement. A point-of-care ultrasound revealed hypoechoic thickening of the septa in the subcutaneous tissue and increased echogenicity of the lobules, indicating erythema nodosum. This led to further investigations, confrming a diagnosis of sarcoidosis. Initiation of corticosteroid therapy with prednisone resulted in an immediate clinical response and signifcant improvement. This case demonstrates the utility of point-of-care ultrasound as a complementary tool in dermatological inspection, ofering a rapid, safe, low-cost, and readily available evaluation. It can be particularly helpful in the clinical suspicion of challenging-to-diagnose cases of panniculitis, confrming septal or lobular predominance, which is difcult to ascertain in a physical examination alone, and ruling out other causes such as cellulitis or venous thrombosis. Moreover, it can assist in guiding biopsies (targeting areas of greater involvement) and even monitoring the response to therapy. In this case, the combination of non-resolving clinical symptoms and the ultrasound fndings prompted further diagnostic evaluation, leading to the correct diagnosi
