Cortical type: The basis for a Modern Neurodevelopmental Synthesis (ontogeny, phylogeny, synaptic connectivity) of the human cerebral cortex
The human cerebral cortex can be parceled into cortical areas according to particular physiological, clinico-pathological, andanatomical features. Alternatively, it can be parceled into cortical types based on laminar complexity. Cortical types are related tosynaptic connectivity and are rooted in ontogeny and phylogeny. In this review, first, we summarize the history of human corticaltype schemes and provide a Rosetta Stone to help identify the equivalences between them. Second, we review the developmentalspecification, phylogenesis, and embryogenesis of mammalian cortical types within the frame of the Prosomeric Model and theHypothesis of the Dual Origin of the Neocortex and propose a causal model for human pallial patterning. Finally, we relate humancortical types to molecular features and synaptic connectivity according to the principles of the Structural Model. A ModernNeurodevelopmental Synthesis of the human cortex emerges, aiming to be a helpful framework for experimental design in basicand clinical neuroscienceJosefa Zaldivar-Diez is the recipient of a Proyectos Jóvenes PPIT2024grant (reference: 2024/00765/001) from the Servicio de Investigación atUniversidad Carlos III de Madri

specialized set of proteins known collectively as the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replisome. Dysfunctions in any component of this replisome can lead to the accumulation of mtDNA mutations, depletion, or instability, ultimately compromising

To investigate these mechanisms, we employed an integrative approach combining cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), biophysics, and biochemistry. Study of the properties o ftwo-dimensional materials using atomic force microscopy

Hybrid femtosecond laser and ion-implantation processing for controlled, deep, high-efficiency ablation in fused silica
Femtosecond laser modification of fused silica enables precise surface tailoring for the fabrication of micro-optical components such as microlenses and diffractive elements. However, the process is governed by laser–matter interactions where the local fluence determines the processing depth, often limiting control over feature geometry and efficiency. Here, we present a hybrid approach combining localized Au implantation (1.8 MeV Au2+ ions) into SiO2 samples with femtosecond laser irradiation (250 fs), effectively tuning the laser–matter interaction and resulting morphology. At both 515 nm and 1030 nm irradiation wavelengths, single-shot femtosecond pulses produce cylindrical craters with sharp edges and flat-bottom profiles. Independently of the fluence, these craters exhibit a constant depth of 550 nm, corresponding to the region of maximum Au concentration. The effect manifests already at moderate fluence (∼4 J/cm2) and yields high ablation efficiency, up to 15 µm3/µJ. The hybrid method also works effectively at lower implantation doses that preserve the excellent transmission of fused silica, offering a promising pathway for the high-quality fabrication of flat optical components such as binary phase masks, phase lenses, or fused-silica micromoldsThis work is part of the Spanish National projects ULS_PSB (PID2020–112770RB-C21 and PID2020–112770RB-C22), HyperSpec (PID2023-148178OB-C22) funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/ 501100011033 and by ERDF/EU, and the Regional Government of Madrid through the project TEC MATRIX-CM (TEC-2024/TEC-85). Who gets scammed? The roles of financial literacy, digital financial security, and overconfidence in Europe
This study investigates the relationship between financial literacy, digital financial security, and the likelihood of falling victim to financial fraud in Europe. Using data from the 2023 OECD/INFE International Adult Financial Literacy Survey, we analyze the prevalence of fraud and its association with financial knowledge, digital skills, and psychological factors such as overconfidence across ten European countries. We focus on three common types of fraud: Ponzi schemes, phishing attacks, and unauthorized credit card use. Our results indicate that while traditional financial literacy does not have a significant protective effect against fraud, digital financial security is strongly associated with reduced victimization in Ponzi and phishing schemes. Additionally, individuals exhibiting overconfidence are significantly more likely to fall victim to scams. Sociodemographic analysis shows that men report higher victimization rates. Contrary to popular belief, older adults are less likely to be victims of fraud, which may reflect lower online exposure, greater caution, or underreportin
Studying the capabilities of graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry for the discrimination of ionic copper from copper and/or copper oxide nanoparticles
This work explores the applicability of Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GFAAS) for the discrimination of ionic copper (Cu ) from copper and/or copper(II) oxide nanoparticles (Cu NPs and/or CuO NPs). To perform the measurements of the NPs by GFAAS, the preparation of stable suspensions from commercial solid standards of NPs with different average sizes was first evaluated. Among the evaluated dispersion media, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) provided the most stable suspensions for both Cu and CuO NPs. The atomization delay (t ad ), defined as the time to reach maximum absorbance, was used as the parameter to discriminate between Cu species. Under the evaluated conditions, Cu 2+ forms. The t ad exhibited higher t ad values than the nanoparticulate 1 values remained constant for Cu concentrations ranging from 5 to 40 μ g L for all species, demonstrating the independence of the discrimination parameter from analyte content. In addition, similar concentration calibration slopes were obtained for all species, indicating the feasibility of performing the quantification using only Cu 2+ standards. The effects of pyrolysis and atomization temperatures, as well as the atomization heating ramp, on the resolution between the t ad values of the Cu species were evaluated. The best time resolution for the discrimination was obtained using a pyrolysis temperature of 350 ◦ ◦ C s 1 and an atomization temperature of 2300 ◦ C, a very slow atomization heating rate of 100 and Cu NP mixtures revealed non-additive signal profiles, suggesting possible ion - NP interactions that modify the species distribution during atomizatio
Unveiling the tyrosinase inhibitory potential of phenolics from Centaurium spicatum: Bridging in silico and in vitro perspectives
Phenolics, abundant in plants, constitute a significant portion of phytoconstituents consumed in the human diet. The phytochemical screening of the aerial parts of Centaurium spicatum led to the isolation of five phenolics. The anti-tyrosinase activities of the isolated compounds were assessed through a combination of in vitro experiments and multiple in silico approaches. Docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation techniques were utilized to figure out the binding interactions of the isolated phytochemicals with tyrosinase. The findings from molecular docking analysis revealed that the isolated phenolics were able to bind effectively to tyrosinase and potentially inhibit substrate binding, consequently diminishing the catalytic activity of tyrosinase. Among isolated compounds, cichoric acid displayed the lowest binding energy and the highest extent of polar interactions with the target enzyme. Analysis of MD simulation trajectories indicated that equilibrium was reached within 30 ns for all complexes of tyrosinase with the isolated phenolics. Among the five ligands studied, cichoric acid exhibited the lowest interaction energies, rendering its complex with tyrosinase the most stable. Considering these collective findings, cichoric acid emerges as a promising candidate for the design and development of a potential tyrosinase inhibitor. Furthermore, the in vitro anti-tyrosinase activity assay unveiled significant variations among the isolated compounds. Notably, cichoric acid exhibited the most potent inhibitory effect, as evidenced by the lowest IC50 value (7.92 ± 1.32 µg/ml), followed by isorhamnetin and gentiopicrin. In contrast, sinapic acid demonstrated the least inhibitory activity against tyrosinase, with the highest IC50 value. Moreover, cichoric acid exhibited a mixed inhibition mode against the hydrolysis of L-DOPA catalyzed by tyrosinase, with Ki value of 1.64. Remarkably, these experimental findings align well with the outcomes of docking and MD simulations, underscoring the consistency and reliability of our computational predictions with the actual inhibitory potential observed in vitroPrincess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University Researchers Supporting Project Number (PNURSP2024R381), Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Visible-light-promoted synthesis of 1,6-imino alcohols by metal-free 1,2-carboimination of alkenes
We report a metal-free synthesis of highly functionalized 1,6-amino alcohols through a visible-light 1,2-carboimination of alkenes and bifunctional starting materials prepared from commercially available alcohols. This protocol orchestrates the generation of up to four different types of radicals, which are efficiently recombined to yield 1,6-iminyl alcohols. The methodology demonstrated a broad functional group tolerance and was validated by the late-stage installation of the 1,6-amino alcohol motif in biomolecules and pharmaceuticals and the scale-up of the process. The versatility of the products was highlighted by their conversion into a variety of useful intermediates for target-directed synthesisThe authors thank Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades-Agencia Estatal de Investigación (Grants PID2023-146801NB-C32, PID2020-113059GB-C22, and PID2021-1248553NB-100), and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement 101034324
