High-resolution scanning tunneling microscope and its adaptation for local thermopower measurements in 2D materials
We present the design, fabrication and discuss the performance of a new combined high-resolution Scanning Tunneling and Thermopower Microscope (STM/SThEM). We also describe the development of the electronic control, the user interface, the vacuum system, and arrangements to reduce acoustical noise and vibrations. We demonstrate the microscope's performance with atomic-resolution topographic images of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and local thermopower measurements in the semimetal Bi2Te3. Our system offers a tool to investigate the relationship between electronic structure and thermoelectric properties at the nanoscaleThe authors thank the support of the Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnolog\u00EDa e Innovaci\u00F3n de Colombia (Grants No. 122585271058), and the Cluster NBIC of Universidad Central (Colombia). Research poems: Exploring the experience of parents of children who have died in the paediatric intensive care unit
Banking supervisory architecture and sovereign risk
This paper investigates whether the design of the banking supervisory architecture impacts sovereign risk. Exploiting the implementation of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) in Europe, we provide evidence that sovereign risk – measured by sovereign ratings – is lower after the largest banks shift from national to supranational supervision. The impact of SSM implementation is shaped by the characteristics of the banking sector and the country’s institutional setting. Using specific bank-level data, we also find that increased bank resilience (banking stability) and reduced volatility of bank credit (credit stability) in the economy underlie the relationship between banking supervision and sovereign risk. The results hold when considering CDS spreads as an alternative measure of sovereign risk and after conducting several robustness testsAll the authors acknowledge financial support from the Regional Government of Madrid– UAM Research Project for Young Researchers (SI3-PJI-2021–00276). Introduction: Bilingual and L2 teacher education from an interdisciplinary research and innovation perspective
This is an Accepted Manuscript of a book chapter published by Routledge/CRC Press in Interdisciplinary research and innovation in bilingual and second language teacher education in 2024, available online: http://www.routledge.com/9781003350217Bilingual education involves teaching literacy, culture, and other subjects using two languages. There are various approaches to bilingual education, with CLIL being the most popular. This interdisciplinary book on bilingual teacher education has been published with practical examples that will be helpful for researchers, educators, and students. The book covers various topics, including digital storytelling and inclusive education, and is organized into five thematic parts. The research findings suggest policymakers, educators, and researchers should work together to invest in these programs and support teachers to ensure all students have access to high-quality language instructio
A Dual-Purpose Model for Binary Data: Estimating Ability and Misconceptions
Most existing diagnostic models are developed to detect whether students have mastered a set of skills of interest, but few have focused on identifying what scientific misconceptions students possess. This article developed a general dual-purpose model for simultaneously estimating students' overall ability and the presence and absence of misconceptions. The expectation-maximization algorithm was developed to estimate the model parameters. A simulation study was conducted to evaluate to what extent the parameters can be accurately recovered under varied conditions. A set of real data in science education was also analyzed to examine the viability of the proposed model in practiceThe first author acknowledges the financial support provided by the National Science Foundation (Grant No. SES-2150601). Co-producing an ecosystem services-based plan for sustainable university campuses
In the context of global change, social-ecological perspectives for organisations and territorial planning schemes are key to facilitate a transition towards sustainability. Consequently, Ecosystem Services (ES) assessment and mapping are being increasingly used to enhance knowledge co-production for more sustainable territorial management. Higher education organizations have the potential to catalyse the sustainability transition of society, but there is a lack of studies integrating novel and current sustainable development approaches in spatial planning at university campuses. Here, we proposed an integrated approach for developing an ecosystem services-based plan to manage the campus of the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain). We developed a participatory process integrating all the various actors and the decision making-bodies of the university. This participatory process involved meetings with different groups and 2,126 surveys administrated to students, professors, researchers and administration/services staff. We also developed a technical process for assessing ES including eight ES maps (four regulating, one provisioning and three cultural), consulted with the experts and stakeholders involved, and built the final version of the planning guide integrating all perspectives to promote ES-based strategic lines. Our results showed that ES maps are useful for creating management units and for multi-scale analysis. ES maps highlighted important values of the campus, allowing the integration of more social actors that allow a stronger participative process and the creation of a long-term planning scheme. However, we identified certain aspects of the ES approach that hinder real-world application, including inherent problems associated with shifting politicsWe acknowledge the participation of all the experts in the campus as well as their contributions and critic view. We also thank all the students and actors in the campus who responded the surveys as well as those who collaborated in different parts of the project. We specially appreciate the implication of Santiago Atrio Cerezo, the former Vice-chancellor of sustainability, which promoted the development of the planning guide as well as the participation of multiple stakeholders. We also would like to thank the current role of the Ecocampus office (now Sustainability office) in pushing the planning guide to become a central guide for the campus, as well as the coordination done with other regional initiatives. Finally, we appreciate the contribution of the three reviewers that helped in the development of the current manuscript, widely improving the quality of results’ presentation and document clarity
