When eco-anger (but not eco-anxiety nor eco-sadness) makes you change! A temporal network approach to the emotional experience of climate change
Título del postprint: It is time to focus on eco-anger rather eco-anxiety: A temporal network approach to the emotional experience of climate changeResearch on the emotional experience of climate change has become a hot topic. Yet uncertainties remain regarding the interplay between climate change-related emotions (i.e., eco-anxiety, eco-anger, eco-sadness), general emotions (i.e., regardless of climate change), and pro-environmental behaviors. Most previous research has focused on cross-sectional studies, and eco-emotions in everyday life have seldom been considered. In this preregistered study, 102 participants from the general population rated their eco-emotions (i.e., eco-anxiety, eco-anger, eco-sadness), general emotions (i.e., anxiety, anger, sadness), and pro-environmental intentions and behaviors daily over a 60-day period. Using a multilevel vector autoregressive approach, we computed three network models representing temporal (i.e., from one time-point to the next), contemporaneous (i.e., during the same time-frame), and between-subject (i.e., similar to cross-sectional approach) associations between variables. Results show that eco-anger was the only predictor of pro-environmental intentions and behaviors over time. At the contemporaneous level, the momentary experience of each eco-emotion was associated with the momentary emotional experience of the corresponding general emotion, indicating the distinctiveness of each eco-emotion and the correspondence between its experience and that of its general, non-climate-related emotion. Overall, our findings 1) emphasize the driving role of eco-anger in prompting pro-environmental behaviors over time, 2) suggest a functional and experiential distinction between eco-emotions, and 3) provide data-driven clues for the field's larger quest to establish the scientific foundations of eco-emotionsData collection was supported by the FRS-FNRS Belgian National

Analysis of tumoral, stromal and glycolitic markers in the response basal cell carcinoma and Bowen disease to photodynamic therapy in real life
Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a widely-used non-surgical treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), actinic keratoses (AK), and Bowen's disease (BD). PDT has high success rates, but various factors, can influence treatment response. This study investigates the clinical, histological, and molecular factors that affect the efficacy of methyl aminolevulinate PDT (MAL-PDT) for BCC and BD. Methods and Patients: Prospective observational multicentric study performed between May 2019 and January 2021 with 64 patients included. Clinical data such as tumor thickness, location, and histological subtype were recorded. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on tumor samples to assess the expression of biomarkers including p53, β-catenin, and GLUT1. Results: Tumor thickness was found to be a critical determinant of MAL-PDT response, with thicker nodular BCCs showing reduced response rates compared to thinner, superficial BCCs and BD lesions. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that p53 positivity was associated with better treatment outcomes, while increased β-catenin and cytoplasmic GLUT1 expression correlated with resistance to PDT. On the other hand, the metabolic profile of the tumors indicated that tumors with higher glycolytic activity were less responsive to treatment, therefore, using metformin, a glycolytic inhibitor, as a potential adjuvant therapy to improve outcomes in resistant tumors should be considered. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the importance of personalized approaches in the use of MAL-PDT, tailoring treatment according to tumor-specific characteristics. Biomarkers such as p53, β-catenin, and GLUT1 can serve as predictive tools for PDT response, helping clinicians identify patients who may benefit from alternative or combined treatments to enhance therapeutic efficacyThis project received support from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III and Fondos Feder Europeos, MINECO (FIS PI21/00953; PI21/00315

An improved method to generate secondary nanoplastics and oligomers: application in ecotoxicology
Recent studies have highlighted the ecotoxicological effects of conventional primary nanoplastics (NPLs); however, the impacts of secondary NPLs and oligomers (Olig), especially those derived from biodegradable plastics, formed through fragmentation and natural degradation processes (e.g., photooxidation) remain underexplored. This gap is partly due to challenges in producing sufficient quantities for toxicity testing. An improved method to generate non-photooxidized (NP) and photooxidized (P) secondary NPLs and Olig from polybutylene adipate co-terephthalate (PBAT), a biodegradable plastic commonly used in agriculture mulching, which involves the mechanical breakdown of PBAT-microbeads with or without prior photooxidation is presented. PBAT was irradiated at ∼9.34 kW m−2 (approximately 120 times the solar irradiance) for 96 h, irradiation that corresponds to ∼16 months of average sunlight in the Iberian Peninsula (7.7 kWh m−2 per day). The toxicological effects on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a model green microalga of primary producers in freshwater ecosystems, were also assessed. The protocol yielded 0.199 mg of secondary NP-PBAT-NPLs and 10.275 mg of NP-PBAT-Olig per gram of PBAT-microbeads. PBAT-NPLs presented irregular spherical morphologies and hydrodynamic sizes ranging from 56.71 to 69.86 nm. HPLC and MALDI-TOF analysis identified linear and cyclic Olig, ranging from dimers to 19 repeated-units Olig. PBAT-NPLs and PBAT-Olig exhibited negative surface charges, suggesting colloidal stability in water. While PBAT-NPLs and PBAT-Olig did not inhibit algal growth in the short term, they induced reactive oxygen species overproduction at the environmentally relevant concentration of 0.01 mg L−1 and caused membrane depolarization, impaired photosynthesis and lipid peroxidation at 10 mg L−1. Non-photooxidized PBAT-NPLs exhibited the highest toxicity, followed by photooxidized PBAT-NPLs and both non-photooxidized and photooxidized PBAT-Olig. This study provides an efficient method for producing reference secondary NPLs and Olig and underscores the potential risks of PBAT towards primary producers in freshwater ecosystemsThe authors acknowledge the financial support provided by the Spanish Government, Ministry of Science and Innovation Grants TED2021-131609B-C32/33, PID2020-113769RB-C21/C22, PLEC2021-007693 and RyC2021-034953-I from the European Union “NextGenerationEU/PRTR
Advancing diagnostics with BODIPY-bismuthene DNA biosensors
In this work, an electrochemical biosensor is prepared based on few-layer bismuthene hexagons (FLBHs) and a water-soluble BODIPY (BDP) derivative (BDP-NaSO3) for early infection diagnosis. In particular, the detection in advance of a virus sequence in nasopharyngeal swab samples was developed. The combination of the FLBHs and BDP-NaSO3 facilitates the direct, sensitive, and specific detection of gene viruses without the need for any prior amplification step. This work demonstrates that the FLBHs provide an improved electrochemical platform for immobilizing thiolated DNA capture probes that increase the sensitivity of the biosensor, while BDP-NaSO3 serves as a newly powerful electrochemical indicator of the hybridization event. As a proof of concept, SARS-CoV-2 was selected as the model virus. The developed biosensor demonstrated selective, rapid, and straightforward detection of the specific sequence RNAdependent RNA-polymerase (RdRp) of SARS-CoV-2 with a detection limit of 4.97 fM and a linear range from 16.6 fM to 100 fM. Furthermore, this platform successfully detects the virus directly in nasopharyngeal swab samples with a viral load of at least 19 Cts without being subjected to any prior amplification stage. Finally, the high stability of the biosensor response, which has been working under ambient conditions for over one month, the selectivity and rapidity for specific virus detection, and the requirement of low-volume samples for the determination are remarkable characteristics that make it ideal for its potential application in clinical diagnosis in point-of-care settingsThis work was financially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (PID2020-116728RB-I00, RED2022-134120-T, PID2023-150844OB-I00, PID2022-138908NB-C31, and PID2021-122299NB-I00), the Community of Madrid (REACT-UE NANOCOV-CM and Y2020/NMT6469), the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (TED2021-129738B-I00, TED2021-130470B-I00, and TED2021-129999B-C32) and the “María de Maeztu” Programme for Units of Excellence in R&D, CEX2023-001316-M.
