Faba Bean Variety Development for Yield, Quality, and Disease Resistance for Water Logged Vertisol Areas-Registration of a Faba Bean Variety Named ‘Ashebeka’
A faba bean (Vicia faba L.) variety named Ashebeka with a pedigree designation of EH01075-4 has been released in 2015 by Kulumsa agricultural research center in Ethiopia. The variety is best adapted to waterlogging vertisol environments of Ethiopia with altitudes ranging from 1900 to 2800 meters above sea level. The variety was developed through hybridization between N86108-5 and BPL1297-1. The candidate variety has been tested at four locations (Arsi Robe, Sagure, Ambo and Inewari) representing major waterlogging vertisol environments of the country during 2012 and 2013 main cropping seasons making eight test environments. The variety is mainly characterized by its higher grain yield and heavier seed size (885g 1000 seeds-1) than the standard checks and all the remaining genotypes in the trail. The variety Ashebeka showed 34% seed size advantage over Hachalu, the popular best standard check recently released for water logging vertisol production areas. Based on selected a parametric method that includes yield rank and stability, Ashebeka showed better performance stability across the test environments and over years than the standard checks, Hachalu and Walki. The variety showed better overall agronomic performance, and moderately resistance to major faba bean disease including root rot, rust and chocolate spot than the standard checks in the trial, and could be cultivated across mid to high altitude agro-ecologies with water-logging vertisol conditions of the country
A Proposed Model for the University Students' E-Portfolio
Previous efforts have been made to develop a model for a university students' e-portfolio and determine university students’ attitudes toward that model; however, to date, few studies have been conducted. This study employed a descriptive and experimental design: interviews with 20 specialists in educational science were conducted to develop and gain consensus on the proposed model for a university students' e-portfolio; and, following verification of its validity and reliability, a 17-item questionnaire was distributed among an experimental group of 90 students (43 male, 47 female) at Al-Shoubak University College to assess their attitudes toward the proposed e-portfolio model. The interviews resulted in a proposed model of a university students' e-portfolio comprising 10 components: student biography, course plan, reports and research, homework, projects and experiments, activities, summaries and conclusions, scientific material, audio and video clips, and samples of student performance. In addition, the results of the questionnaire revealed that the students' attitudes toward the proposed model were generally positive. Consequently, it is recommended that faculty members introduce the university students' e-portfolio into teaching practice
The Relationship between Teachers and School Professional Staff’s Retention and Managerial Styles
The retention of teachers and school professional staff is a challenge for the development and management of schools, particularly for international schools with difficulties in recruiting qualified teachers and school professional staff from overseas. However, only a few research projects have focused on how administrative styles influence the turnover of international school teachers and school professional staff. The researcher collected data from two semi-structured interview sessions with 51 international school teachers who have taught at an international school for more than a decade in one of two metropolitan districts in mainland China. This project aims, through the lens of Social Cognitive Career Theory, to understand why international school teachers and school professional staff decide to stay in a particular international school for their teaching career development. The participants indicated “acknowledgement from upper leadership”, “classroom/workplace authorities”, and “well-established facilities” to explain their current occupation as experienced international school teachers. The findings also outline potential solutions which could control the high turnover rate in international schools and local schools in the East Asian regions
Evaluation of Student Affairs Services in Higher Education in East Java
Academia is not the only sector or service that should be focused on and provided to students within higher education institutions. Student affairs services must also be adequately provided to recipients of higher education institution services, namely students. Student affairs services contribute significantly to the overall ranking of higher education institutions. The present study aims to evaluate and obtain information about the quality of student affairs services in higher education institutions in East Java, Indonesia. The present research conducts an evaluation using reference to the Regulation of the Minister of Administrative Reform and Bureaucratic Reform of the Republic of Indonesia Number 14 of 2017 Concerning Guidelines for the Preparation of a Public Satisfaction Survey Unit for Public Service Providers. The method used is a survey method, leveraging a questionnaire with a positivistic paradigm. The results of this research have shown that student services are ranked ‘good’, but an evaluation is required in terms of their implementation, because the services are not yet reaching a status of ‘excellent’. Another finding is that student affairs services are widely known to include scholarships, whereas services of interest include awarding talents, logic or reasoning competence. Moving forward, it is hoped that student affairs services will become more efficient in terms of bureaucracy in order to achieve the effectiveness of all parties involved
Analysis of the Factors Preventing High School Students from Participating in Recreational Activities
This study aims to examine the factors preventing high school students from participating in recreational activities. The study was conducted on 300 students, 150 female (average age; 15,66±1,01) and 150 male (average age; 16,31±1,29), attending high school during 2019-2020 academic year. As data collection tool, “Leisure Constraints Questionnaire (LCQ)” which was developed by Alexandris and Carroll (1997), adapted into Turkish by Gürbüz and Karaküçük (2007), tested for construct validity with confirmatory factor analysis by Gürbüz, Emir, and Oncü (2012) and which included 6 sub-dimensions and 18 items, was used in the study. Significant association was found between knowledge sub-dimension of Leisure Constraints Questionnaire (LCQ) and high school students’ states of doing sport and sport branch (p<0,05). Significant association was found between facilities sub-dimension and elder sibling and younger sibling (p<0.05). However, no significant association was found between gender and Leisure Constraints Questionnaire sub-dimensions (p>0.05). There are no big differences in the factors that affect high school students’ participation in recreational activities. Social and cultural areas that can meet the needs of young people and the number of green areas, playgrounds and recreational areas where they can show their physical performance should be increased and participation of young people in these activities should be encouraged so that young generations can grow up healthily and acquire the necessary behaviors for healthy life. Provincial and town municipalities should also diversify and increase recreational areas so that the society can benefit more
Use of Video Blogs in Alleviating Public Speaking Anxiety among ESL Learners
Speaking ability is one of the integral language components in English language acquisition. This ability is a challenging one to master for ESL learners, as it involves several linguistic and non-linguistic features in presenting ideas and it is frequently associated with anxiety. Public speaking anxiety is a common issue faced by students learning a second language. Feelings such as stage fright and nervousness could contribute to their anxiety in communicating using the target language. Additionally, the classroom environment, the presence of the instructor and peer pressure could also be factors which pose a threat for students, particularly in public speaking settings. The present study aims to investigate whether public speaking anxiety can be alleviated through the use of online platforms and/ or video blogs. The creation of personal video blogs could potentially help learners by providing a safe and non-threatening learning environment in which to practise their public speaking skills. This study also aims to identify the factors that influence the use of video blogs as a public speaking platform. A mixed-method approach is designed to examine the effects of using video blogs. A set of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were applied to groups of tertiary level ESL learners. Quantitative and qualitative approaches to data analysis were carried out and the results indicate that the use of video blogs does bring significant positive outcomes in reducing public speaking anxiety among ESL learners

Pesticides and Fertilizers Use in Parts of Rivers Niger and Kaduna Catchments, North Central, Nigeria
Pesticides and fertilizers use in parts of Rivers Niger and Kaduna catchments, north central, Nigeria was investigated. Contamination of the rivers and their resources due to unsustainable use of pesticides and fertilizers by local farmers are a major problem in the study area. Also, data from the study of pesticides and fertilizer use remain scanty and therefore needed. The objective is to find the opportunity for all stakeholders to improve on the overall environmental performance. Extensive field survey was conducted using various participatory appraisals techniques involving key stakeholders in the area. Collated data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods (frequency percentage). The results of findings identify unsustainable use of fertilizers and pesticides by farmers in the study area. It further shows respondents in the study area applied high rate of fertilizers and pesticides during farming activities which obviously improved crop yield but in turn lead to water quality degradation. Virtually, majority of the farmers have little or no measures towards ensuring protection of water and biota from the potential danger of pesticides and fertilizers use in the study area. These attitudes discovered could lead to water quality degradation, biodiversity disruption and subsequent negative impact on economic development in the study area. In view of the above, it is recommended that visible and effective environmental management policies in respect of agrochemicals use in the study area be put in place to guarantee cleaner and healthier environment for all
