Social Sustainability Reporting and Board Structures in the Healthcare Industry
This paper aims to analyze the structure of the corporate board that triggers social sustainability reporting in the healthcare industry. The sample consists of 60 firm-year observations. Data on corporate governance was collected from the annual reports of the sampled companies and social sustainability data were obtained from MachameRatios. Moreover, financial information was collected from the NSE factbooks. Consistent with the study’s predicted hypotheses, the result reveals that companies with several directors and with one or more female directors as board members are more likely to report social sustainability activities. However, having nonexecutive directors on the board had limited impact on issues relating to sustainability. Our study adds to the existing literature on board structures and sustainability reporting that large and diverse boards are material determinants of social sustainability reporting. The study findings are consistent with various regulatory bodies’ initiatives (for example, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Nigeria) on board structures. The commission mandated all listed firms to have at least five directors. Hence, encouraging companies to have larger and diverse boards composed of mixed genders with greater experience will positively impact sustainability reporting
Evolution of Sustainability Reporting Research: Evidence from Indonesia (A Systematic Literature Review)
This paper aims to systematize the research field of sustainability reporting (SR) in Indonesia. The paper reviews the development of research at SR, provides a critique of past research, and outlines future research opportunities. The paper provides a systematic review of existing studies and analyses SR in Indonesia using a qualitative approach. This review analyzed 36 studies on SR in Indonesia published between 2016 and 2020. Most published SR studies take a quantitative approach and focus on the private sector, with very little attention paid to SR implementation in the public sector or SMEs. Therefore, this study provides a comprehensive account of the development of sustainability reporting research in Indonesia over the past five years. The analysis undertaken in this paper addresses the gaps in the literature on SR research in Indonesia and serves as a guide for researchers, academics, and interested researchers. The study is limited to peer-reviewed papers, so research published at conferences or seminars is not addressed. However, further studies can be conducted by expanding the keyword and search database or using working papers from conferences or workshops to cover what this review may not have uncovered
Factors Influencing Green Human Capital to Improve Green Performance in Indonesian Start-Up Business
This study gathers empirical evidence on the influence of green human resource management, green training, and the role of government in encouraging green human capital to improve green performance. The author conducted this study using a survey of 91 Start-up businesses in Indonesia as the sample, selected using a purposive sampling method. Data was collected using questionnaires. After collection, the author tested the validity and reliability of the data prior to hypotheses testing. Data analysis for hypothesis testing adopted partial least squares regression. Results indicate that green human capital management, green training, and the role of government significantly affect green human capital. Green human capital in turn significantly affects Green Performance. Green Performance can be successful by increasing awareness of green human capital on the part of Start-up businesses in Indonesia. Using green human capital to improve green performance will require green human resource management, green training, and the participation of the government, which must carry out its assistance with implementation through a sustainable commitment. Green Performance measurement is an issue of concern for sustainability and environmental balance in Start-up businesses in Indonesia
Effect of Attributions on Consumer Response to CSR Efforts with Consumer Trust as the Moderator
This study aims to examine the effect of other and self-serving attributions on the consumer response to corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts with consumer trust as the moderator. This study also examines the differences in perceptions between men and women in assessing the motives of CSR efforts. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey of 122 students at a private university in Bandung. Multiple linear regression, independent simple T-Test, and F test were used for data analysis. Results prove that other-serving attributions have a positive effect on consumer response to CSR efforts. Meanwhile, self-serving attributions have a negative effect on consumer response to CSR efforts. When moderated by consumer trust in the firm, other-serving attributions will increase the consumer response to CSR efforts, whereas self-serving attributions will further reduce the consumer response to CSR efforts. Differences in perceptions are found between men and women regarding the consumer response to CSR efforts. This study implies that the development of CSR efforts needs to consider attributions and consumer trust in the firm
The Validity of Multiple Choice and Essay Composition Proficiency Assessment for English Language Learners
Students take assessment methods designed to examine their command of the English language in all four skill domains – reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as outlined by individual states. There has been much debate on whether multiple choice questions or essay compositions are valid in assessing students' English language proficiency. This paper aims to determine whether multiple-choice tests or written compositions are more reliable in gauging students' English competence. The author underlines that multiple choice tests could be successfully employed to test grammar, listening or reading skills. This research incorporated a qualitative methodology by utilizing deductive content analysis. The results of this study demonstrate that using multiple-choice questions is valid because they help students develop abilities for independent learning and raise their level of English proficiency. The deductive approach began with developing a theory that multiple choice questions are the most valid method of assessing a learner's proficiency in the English language. The author then found relevant and credible articles that address the research question. A hypothesis was then developed that teachers who use multiple choice questions can assess learners' English language proficiency compared to those who use compositions. Conclusions about the validity of the multiple choice questions are drawn and future research directions are also proposed
Do Globalization, Technology Adoption and Economic Development Influence Income Inequality in Developing Asian Nations?
Currently, income inequality has become an international issue that needs to be overcome and also requires the attention of researchers and policymakers. Hence, this study is an attempt to explore the impact of globalization, technology adoption, and economic development on income inequality. For this purpose, 20 years of large-scale panel data over the period from 2001 to 2020 for ten emerging Asian nations (Iran, Jordan, Iraq, Laos, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines) is mined from the World Bank database and KOF globalization index. In order to inspect the empirical relationship among the selected variables, the panel data fixed effects model (FEM) along with the robust standard error is employed. The results indicate that globalization, technology adoption, and economic development have a negative linkage with income inequality, which means these factors play a significant role in removing the income inequality in developing countries. This study provides insight for policymakers while developing policies regarding income inequality elimination in the country
Understanding the Students’ Adversities in the Science Classroom
Science has long been regarded as an important subject in a school curriculum and science teachers play a vital role in the learning process of the students in the science classrooms as well as in other subjects. However, students still encounter problems related to their science teachers, which significantly influence their academic performance in science. Using a qualitative-phenomenological design, an in-depth and systematic analysis of the students’ experiences gathered during the face-to-face interview provided a detailed explanation of the teacher-based adversities in the science classroom. The students who participated in this study revealed that they had encountered various teacher-based adversities, which disrupted and affected their learning and performance in the science classroom. Students experienced having a teacher of limited pedagogical content knowledge in science, and little commitment to teach science in the classroom. Consequently, the students were not encouraged to learn science; they lost interest to learn science as well as they have developed a negative attitude towards their teachers and the subject. In the same manner, the students experienced difficulty in understanding the topic and inability to connect previous information to a new one because of having a teacher of little commitment in the instruction of science. With this, the interested parties such as the teachers, administrators, students can develop appropriate actions to address these problems not only in the science classroom but in the school in general
See: How Indonesian Student Writers Use Directives in Academic Texts
This study investigates the roles and functions of directives in academic texts mainly produced by Indonesian college students. Sixty-two (62) imperatives, 11 “it is + Adjective + to”-clauses, and 7 modals of obligation are searched for in academic texts taken from the Corpus of State University of Malang Indonesian Learners English (C-SMILE) and the Corpus of Indonesian Texts in Academia (CINTA). As a point of comparison, we use the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). We found that the corpora are similar regarding the high frequency of occurrences of the imperative see, among other directives. However, the corpora differ with regards to the functions of the imperative see. Whilst see in COCA plays an important role in directing readers to both internal and external sources, see in C-SMILE and CINTA is used exclusively to refer to internal resources. This suggests a lack of access on the part of Indonesian undergraduates’ to necessary reading materials. In addition, other directives, such as cognitive imperatives, are rarely used in the Indonesian corpora. The low frequency of cognitive imperatives indicates that the practice of inviting readers to develop their mental process of understanding has not been well established in Indonesian academic culture. These findings suggest the need to introduce to Indonesian student writers, various ways of engaging readers into texts
