    The Development of Practice Packages on Chinese Pronunciation Skills through Seesaw Online Classroom for Students Majoring in Chinese Language Teaching

    This research aimed to 1) develop and measure the efficiency of a set of reading and pronunciation skills in Chinese phonetics via Seesaw online classroom; 2) examine the effectiveness of the set; and 3) evaluate students' satisfaction with practice packages on Chinese pronunciation via Seesaw online classroom. Thirty-six undergraduate students majoring in Chinese language teaching at a university in Thailand were the participants of this study. This study used descriptive statistics (mean and S.D.) and dependent samples t-test. The results of this research indicated a substantial increase in students' learning achievement due to the Seesaw online classroom. Additionally, the Development of Practice Packages for Chinese Pronunciation Skill Acquisition via Seesaw Online Classroom was greater (x̄=4.84, S.D.=0.37) than the researcher’s standard of 3.50, and achieved the efficiency standard criteria of 82.50/84.97, which was greater than the 80/80 efficiency standard criterion chosen. Students' satisfaction with learning was high when they utilized Seesaw's Chinese pronunciation practice packages (x̄= 4.50, S.D.= 0.54)

    GeoGebra Assisted Multiple Representations for Enhancing Students’ Representation Translation Abilities in Calculus

    Multiple representations cultivate students’ mathematical mindset. However, research results have reported that students do not benefit from these tools due to lack of representational fluency. This study was designed to determine the impact of GeoGebra assisted multiple representations approach on students’ representation translation performance in calculus. Pretest - posttest quasi experimental design was implemented. Three intact groups of first year first semester of social science students in the 2019/2020 academic year of size 53, 57 and 54 at Jigjiga and Kebri-Dehar Universities in Ethiopia were considered. The groups were taught with GeoGebra supported multiple representations (MRT), multiple representations (MR) and comparison group (CG). Representation translation test was given before and after the treatment. Furthermore, students’ translation errors were categorized as implementation, interpretation and preservation errors and analyzed using frequency and percentage. The ANCOVA result revealed that significant difference was obtained on the adjusted mean of RTF posttest (F (2,160) = 5.29, P = 0.006, Partial η2 =0.062) in favor of the MRT. The interpretation error was the most frequently committed among the groups. Recommendations were forwarded that included the use of GeoGebra and the need to conduct further study with different participants to generalize to the entire population

    The Impact of Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management on Sustainability Performance in the Tourism Industry in Algeria

    In today’s business context of globalization, competition, knowledge economy, rapid technological changes, and external environmental factors, knowledge management and business intelligence on the tourism level have received increased attention in an effort to identify smart performance factors and change the structure of organizations. Similarly, the tourism industry has experienced considerable development during recent decades. Moreover, sustainability is becoming increasingly important for society and is especially critical in the operation of the tourism industry. It is well known that sustainability is a prerequisite to carrying out any activity. This evaluates the relationship between knowledge management in operations and business intelligence systems on the sustainability performance within the tourism industry in Algeria. A total of 126 questionnaires were distributed to the study sample. A multiple regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses of the study. This study concludes that there is a positive relationship between knowledge management processes and sustainability performance. Further, the components of business intelligence have positive impacts on sustainability performance. The results can facilitate utilizing the knowledge management processes and business intelligence implementation in Algeria’s tourist industry

    Board Gender Diversity and Firm Performance: Evidence from Family-Owned Firms in India

    This study investigates the impact of board gender diversity (BGD) on firm performance (FP) for family-owned Indian firms. To do so, this study selects a sample of the 75 top-listed family-owned firms for a period of 5 years. For empirical analysis, the study used appropriate panel data models. For robustness, the three-stage least square (3SLS) model was used. The findings obtained from panel data models reveal a significant positive impact of BGD in terms of its different measures on FP after controlling corporate governance and firm-specific characteristics. Such results are further substantiated through the 3SLS model. This study provides novel evidence on the impact of BGD in terms of its diverse constructive measures on FP for family-owned firms in the Indian context, thereby extending the ongoing debate about the outcomes of the mandatory gender quota on board for an emerging market

    Impact of Corporate Governance Attributes on Sustainability Reporting: Evidence from India

    The study aimed to examine the impact of corporate governance attributes on sustainability reporting in the context of 435 non-financial companies from the top 500 BSE-listed companies based on market capitalization. The study is based on secondary data collected from the published sustainability, governance, and annual reports for a period of 6 years, that is, from 2015 to 2020. We have employed a content analysis technique to measure CSP using binary coding, that is, 0 (for non-disclosure) and 1 (for disclosure of item) based on the GRI reporting framework. Using panel data regression, we found that the corporate governance attribute plays an incredibly significant role in influencing the sustainability disclosure of Indian firms. Outcome of the regression results clearly indicates that except for independent directors all aspects of corporate governance, such as board size, gender diversity, and CEO duality have a positive and significant impact on Indian companies’ corporate sustainability reporting practices indicating that they play a key role in influencing the reporting practices of Indian companies

    The Relationship Between EFL Teachers’ Professional Identity and Professional Autonomy

    This study aims to identify 250 Turkish EFL teachers’ level of professional identity and professional autonomy. This study also aims to investigate whether the results differ by gender, the school in which they work, education level and work experience. Furthermore, the study aims to identify whether there is a significant relationship between EFL teachers’ professional identity and their professional autonomy. In this survey-based research, the results demonstrate that EFL teachers have a very high level of professional identity and a high level of professional autonomy, and the results differ by EFL teachers’ gender, school type and work experience. Results also reveal that there was a significant, positive and moderate relationship between professional identity and professional autonomy of EFL teachers. This study suggests that the freer EFL teachers feel to make decisions in their teaching and profession, the more they can define their identity in the teaching profession

    Glycyrrhizin, Curcumin and Cinnamon Prevent From Concanavalin-A and Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Injury and Oxidative Stress in Mouse Model

    Daily exposure to a number of xenobiotics is the major contributing factor to liver injury. The present study investigated the mechanism of hepatoprotection by glycyrrhizin, curcumin and cinnamon in two distinct models of hepatotoxicity i.e., by using Concanavalin-A (ConA) and Acetaminophen (APAP). For this evaluation, balb/c mice were pretreated with glycyrrhizin (200 mg/kg i.g.), curcumin (100 mg/kg i.g.) and cinnamon (200 mg/kg i.g.) extracts for 14 days followed by administration of ConA (15 mg/kg i.v.) and APAP (200 mg/kg i.p.) for 8 hours. At the end of the experiment, mice were dissected and blood and liver samples were collected for biochemical and histopathological analysis. Statistical analysis by using one-way ANOVA followed by DMR test was performed for the significance of results. The results showed that pre-treatment of glycyrrhizin, curcumin and cinnamon ameliorated the damaging effects of ConA and APAP on the liver as indicated by the serum transaminase enzymes and total protein levels. In addition, ConA and APAP exerted severe damage on liver tissues as confirmed from the histopathological analysis. However, glycyrrhizin, curcumin and cinnamon prevented liver injury, possibly through antioxidant mechanism. In conclusion, glycyrrhizin, curcumin and cinnamon possessed antioxidant properties with therapeutic potential in liver injury related to oxidative stress

    Prediction of the Strength Behaviour of the Sandy Soil by using Collapse Potential in the Kintele Site-Congo

    This work aims to evaluate the water effect on the soils collapse potential. The laboratory tests based on the soils samples preparation determined the soils properties. Parameters such as water content, dry unit weight, degree of saturation, voids ratio and particles size distribution were determined. The collapse potential was analysed indirectly according to various researchers criteria. The results confirmed the high vulnerability of the study area to collapse. The oedometer tests determined the values of the collapse potential showing the conventional relationship between the collapse potential and the water content. It is noted that increasing water content leads to decrease soils strength to collapse, and the increasing progress of collapse poses a risk to constructions on silty sand. The collapse potential decreases with the increase in the relative density keeping the water content constant. This collapse potential caused by soil water content variation can be reduced from compaction

    Quality Control Compliance as an Environmental Response to Sustainability in the Nigerian Construction Industry

    The concept of sustainability has become integral to the environmental dialect within the building construction industry. At present, providing an avenue by which the construction industry can meet its sustainability obligations has remained a topical issue globally. An environmentally oriented movement toward sustainability in building construction, however, still hinges on the traditional principles of cost, quality, and performance. This paper x-rays the unethical performance traits evident in the construction industry in Nigeria and the project delivery practices by indigenous firms that significantly influence the quality and thus the sustainability of construction output. Issues associated with quality control compliance are statistically analysed to determine existing trends. Multivariate analysis is deployed to measure the degree to which quality control parameters explain the participation level of indigenous local contractors in executing government projects. The study mathematically expresses the relationship between quality control adherence and indigenous participation in the execution of government contracts. The statistical analysis shows that the five quality control independent variables (internal organizational factor; the level of enlightenment; adequacy of designs; conducting of relevant tests and supervisory adherence) explain 47% of the variation in the level of indigenous participation. Poor quality control associated with the execution of contracts by indigenous construction companies in Nigeria may thus partly account for the low level of indigenous participation evident in the construction industry

    Engineering Structural Strength Properties of Lateritic Soil-Cement Mix for Road Pavement Stability

    Qualitative construction materials in highway pavement prompted addition of cement at different proportion of 2 - 10% to lateritic soils for enhanced performance. Engineering geological tests were performed on the soil-cement mixture to determine their highway pavement suitability for durable road construction. Furthermore, modelling of the strength characteristics of the mixture presents the correlation between the structural properties and cement mix. Thus, increase in soil-cement California bearing ratio (CBR) and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) values with higher cement mix of 8%, revealed enhanced soil improvement. The soil strength is also affected by the curing period. Better quality strength characteristics obtained decreases pavement thickness with reduced cost in road construction. Relationship between the soil strength properties and cement mix content are represented by polynomial model. This reveals stronger bearing capacity of soil cement mix cured in 14 days with R2 ≥ 0.8. The lateritic soil cement mix at 8% cement content could serve as highway subbase and base construction materials. Cement mix having positive effects on soil geotechnical properties are indication of its effectiveness in enhancing volume stability of different soils. Prolong curing time is essential for compacted soil cement mix for enhanced geotechnical engineering properties and to improve the quality of lateritic soil used as road construction materials. Thus, cement-stabilized lateritic soil reduces cost of road construction, its persistent failure, human and environmental losses
