    Get PDF
The primary aim of this research is to investigate the impact of utilizing the scaffolding method on teaching academic writing in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at universities in Vietnam. This mixed-method study examined the attitudes and perceptions of 88 EFL educators from diverse backgrounds and degree levels who were randomly selected for the research. Methodologically, data were gathered and analyzed using the appropriate methods for each instrument, including a questionnaire and focus group discussion (FGD). Theoretically, the study is a medley of relevant theories and approaches such as Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory of Learning, the Scaffolding theory, and the ‘High challenge - High support’ pedagogy. The results of this study suggest that participants used scaffolding to some extent and had strongly positive attitudes and perceptions regarding its practical aspects; however, the findings also revealed that the surveyed lecturers are deficient in the necessary knowledge and skills. In addition, the study's findings imply that EFL teachers need training on how to properly use scaffolding as a pedagogical strategy to facilitate teaching academic writing to EFL students

    Get PDF
The primary objective of this cross-sectional study was to explore the degree to which 117 pre-service visual art teachers’ competitiveness within the education field. A self-reported competitiveness scale (six items distributed between three factors) was designed and validated by the authors based on the focal points of Michael Porter’s Five Forces framework. Additionally, the   respondents’ digital competence was assessed as an auxiliary criterion of educator attractiveness in the art education domain. Both competitiveness and digital skills measurements yielded mediocre scores. Regression analysis showed that respondents’ competitiveness perceptions were predicted neither by digital skills level nor by socio-demographic characteristics such as age, gender, rural or urban background, marital status or whether the student was a graduate or undergraduate. The present study highlights the need for understanding of how visual art majors perceive the sector and   evaluate competitiveness among visual art students which itself indicates its sizable contribution to educational research. Other researchers can employ the competitiveness questionnaire introduced to gain deeper insights into the topic or related subjects

The primary aim of Vietnam's new educational program is to enhance students' knowledge and skills through practical learning experiences, enabling them to tackle academic and real-world challenges. However, teachers in Dong Thap province face limitations in their professional competencies. Thus, this study aims to address these issues by examining different models for developing teachers' professional competencies. 1,116 participants participated in this study (258 managers and 868 teachers from high schools and preschools) who completed two questionnaires assessing their professional competence and the perceived importance of professional development. The findings reveal that teachers lack subject knowledge, interdisciplinary understanding   and skills in teaching design and assessment. Both school managers and teachers recognize the necessity of professional competence development. A three-step process for enhancing teachers' professional competence is proposed for implementing professional development activities based on these findings

This study aimed to examine the contribution of the hidden curriculum to gender inequality in teaching and learning materials. Despite the efforts to have an official curriculum through school textbooks and learning materials. The hidden curriculum continued to encourage gender inequality through teaching and learning materials.  The study examined the content and portrayal of males and females in primary school social studies textbooks. The study used a qualitative research approach and the documentary review method was used to gather information from books, published articles, and policy documents. The findings show that there was an improvement in addressing gender inequality in textbooks and learning materials. The findings show that the visibility and representation of females in textbooks have increased. However, gender roles were portrayed in stereotypical ideas and images that encourage gender bias.  The study concluded that teaching and learning materials encourage a hidden curriculum that facilitates the underrepresentation of females and males in textbooks. Therefore, the Government in collaboration with the relevant authorities should ensure that the development of teaching and learning materials considers gender-responsive content and gender balance in role allocation. There is a need to increase awareness among reviewers and book authors on gender sensitivity in the preparation of teaching and learning materials in order to ensure adherence to gender equality principles

Digital competencies and lifelong learning tendencies are among the features that every teacher candidate should have. Therefore, carrying out research on both lifelong learning trends and digital competencies can contribute to the development and updating of teacher education programs. In this context, the aim of this research is to analyses the relationship between lifelong learning tendencies and digital competencies of teacher candidates. In this research, scanning model from descriptive research models and explanatory model from relational research methods were used. The sample of this research consists of 287 teacher candidates selected by simple random sampling method from among teacher candidates studying at this state university. In this study, two scales were used to determine the relationship between the lifelong learning tendencies of teacher candidates and their digital competencies. The first of these scales is the “Lifelong Learning Tendency Scale”. The second scale used in the research is the "Digital Competency Scale". There is a significant and moderate relationship between the lifelong learning tendencies scale in general and the competencies of using basic internet tools and the competencies of acquiring and using information in digital environment. Since there is a moderately significant relationship between lifelong learning tendencies and digital competence, these two concepts should be reflected in teacher education programs in a way that supports each other, without considering each other separately
