Effect of environmental conditions on the properties of plasma-pretreated glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites
The aim of the work was to further improve the properties of fiber composite materials through an additional plasma treatment integrated into the manufacturing process. For this purpose, glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin composite materials were manufactured using the vacuum infusion process. In some of the samples, the biaxial glass fiber fabric was pretreated with an air plasma generated in a dielectric barrier discharge. All samples were exposed to temperature changes, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and NaCl and KOH solutions and then examined for their mechanical properties. Compared to the reference samples, the plasma-treated samples showed slightly better mechanical properties. The strength values determined in tensile, compression, and bending tests were several percent higher. Thermal stress and UV radiation did not lead to a loss of mechanical performance. The effect of NaCl and KOH solutions deteriorated the mechanical properties. Although the comparatively better mechanical properties of the plasma-treated samples were retained after the different treatments, the stability of the composite material against aggressive environmental conditions was not significantly improved
Impact of rubrics on students’ self-assessment and overall performance in an EAP writing course
This study investigates the impact of rubric use on students’ self-assessment and overall performance in an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) writing course. Recognizing the complexity of academic writing, which requires substantial guidance and effort, the research examines how rubrics can help align students’ self-assessments with instructor’s and / or program expectations. The study involved six students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds who participated in multiple rounds of rubric-related assessments and following reflective activities. The findings suggest that consistent use of rubrics can significantly enhance students’ understanding of writing criteria, improve the correlation between student and instructor evaluations, and consequently lead to better writing outcomes. However, certain challenges such as lower proficiency levels, time constraints, or lack of interest / motivation may limit students’ ability to fully comprehend and utilize rubrics effectively while performing a writing task. The research highlights the need for clear and measurable rubric descriptors to support students’ comprehension, additionally to providing multiple writing samples for reference and allowing adequate practice time. These insights contribute to the ongoing discussion on rubric effectiveness in General English Language Teaching (General ELT) and EAP settings, offering practical suggestions how to improve academic writing instruction and bridge the gap between students’ performance and instructor’s and/ or program expectations
Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil Certification: Advancing Sustainability through Phenomenology Studies of Transcendent Auditing Practices
This research focuses on the examination of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification, which strives to save the environment while maintaining the economic advantages of palm oil plants by using sustainable methods. The research technique used in this study includes conducting interviews and focus group discussions with stakeholders engaged in the RSPO audit, as well as evaluating data from the RSPO website in conjunction with up-to-date academic literature. The results indicate that several principles confirmed in the RSPO audit are in accordance with transcendent ideals included in the Quran. These principles specifically address the negative impact on the environment, as described in Q.S Ar-Rum 42, which states: “Damage has occurred on land and at sea due to the actions of human beings; Allah may make them experience a portion of the consequences of their actions, so that they may learn from it.” In addition, the unregulated use of chemical fertilizers on plantations starkly contrasts with the environmental deterioration caused by these activities. There are also concerns about the possible negative effects that badly managed plantations, especially those situated in communities, might have on human existence in the future
Concept And Implementation Social Return On Investment (SROI): Case Study On MSME Culinary Redesign Program
This research aims to review the Social Return on Investment (SROI) concept and analyze Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities conducted by a State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), namely PT Semen Indonesia. This research uses the survey method which employs a questionnaire, along with a literature review, focus group discussions, and interviews. This study analyzes the impact from the point of view of the stakeholders (the community and other affected parties). The result of the SROI calculation shows that the CSR program conducted by PT Semen Indonesia has resulted in a positive, significant, and substantial impact on the stakeholders. SROI ratio for CSR program is calculated at 3,46. It means that for every 1 rupiah spent, the social return on investment gained 3,46 rupiah. The CSR Program increased sales, reduced gasoline costs (economics), reduced carbon emissions (environment), and increased SME owners as well as consumers happiness (social). The stakeholders are aware of the benefits of social investment, which supports the theory of change. The limitation of this research is the complexity of calculating SROI, especially monetizing the social benefits and the social costs, which relies upon several assumptions
Achieving Sustainable Development through Non-Oil Sector Development: Is this Feasible in Nigeria?
The aim of this study is to analyze the contribution of non-oil sector development in fostering sustainable development in Nigeria, utilizing time series data from 1986 to 2018. The study used pairwise granger causality and OLS estimation techniques to determine the impact of non-oil sector development (agriculture, manufacturing, and services) in supporting sustainable development, as measured by unemployment and poverty rates. The pairwise granger causality results reveal that agriculture output, industrial output, and service sector output all have unidirectional causality with unemployment and poverty rates. The findings of the OLS estimate indicated that the components of non-oil sector development are significant and negatively associated to sustainable development in Nigeria. The results also offer the foundation for arguing the postulate of resources cause theory, which states that countries endowed with non-renewable natural resources typically experience sluggish economic growth and development. Thus, this imply that non-oil sector development is a crucial predictor of Nigeria’s sustainable development. As a result, we urge that the Nigerian government increase its investment in the agricultural, manufacturing, and service sectors
Sustainable Human Resource Practices: The Impact of Transformational Leadership, Organizational Commitment, and Work Motivation on Job Satisfaction
This literature study examines the influence of transformational leadership style, organizational commitment, and work motivation on job satisfaction. This research method applies to a literature study or systematic literature review (SLR) procedure. This research data was obtained through online searches and journals related to job satisfaction published in the 2020-2023 period. The number of journals analyzed was 20 journals. The results of this literature study show that the transformational leadership style can function as a mentor who can create job satisfaction in employees through work performance and act as a friend who can create job satisfaction in employees through work relationships. Job satisfaction resulting from organizational commitment is influenced by several factors such as a good and healthy organizational culture, the active involvement of employees both structurally and culturally in the organization, and various memorable and enjoyable experiences during the organization which are conditioned by a comfortable and conducive work environment. Strong motivation for work is an internal drive that can awaken all unexplored potential to be activated in hard work, innovative work and sincere work to achieve individual job satisfaction and work success for the organization
Ownership and Solvency of (Re)Insurance Companies: An Indonesian Climate-Based Insurance Study
Despite the urgency of COVID-19, insurance companies are facing a slower-moving global crisis, namely climate change. This paper aims to investigate how corporate ownership affects the solvency of (re)insurance companies. It also analyses how climate-based insurance products, and the COVID-19 pandemic period differentiate these effects. The quantitative approach uses company accounting data throughout 2016-2022 and solvency is measured by risk-based capital (RBC). The findings show that for climate change-based (re)insurance companies, the larger the foreign-owned company, the higher the RBC level. Meanwhile, there is no difference in the effect of government and non-government owned insurance companies on their RBC. Another finding found that foreign ownership has a significant effect on the RBC of general insurance companies during the COVID-19 pandemic, while there is no relationship between the two during normal conditions. This research is expected to encourage the development and sustainability of climate change-based insurance, as well as input for financial regulators
The role of information technology in STEM education
The ubiquity of IT (Information technology) for teaching at large is a reality that can be observed, including STEM education, which is the field of study of this research. In view of this situation, this work is intended to determine the role of IT in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education. It was decided to conduct a systematic review based on PRISMA model and adding information obtained from the analysis of fugitive literature. The literature review was carried out on a total of 16 articles. The main inclusion criteria were a temporal selection from 2015 to March 2023, the inclusion of the terms IT and STEM in the title, abstract or keywords of the articles. The main results show an increasing tendency of this topic, especially in English research. Most relevant conclusions of the systematic review evidence a positive relationship between IT and STEM education, although some negative aspects are also highlighted as there is still a lack of resources and teacher training, leading to ineffective application of IT in STEM classes. The research results have important practical implications, it motivates teachers to research, propose and implement measures to enhance the role of IT in STEM education, while minimizing the limitations that have been identified
Parent-school collaboration based on the frequency of visits to their child's school
This study examines parent-school collaboration in primary schools. School administrators, teachers, and parents are the stakeholders of the school, together with the students. Coordinated and harmonious work by all stakeholders increases the success of the school. The family plays an important role in raising a child, and the importance of collaboration between school and family is increasing day by day. Therefore, we expect parents to collaborate with teachers and school administrators in this process. The sample consists of 336 primary school parents randomly selected from 4 schools in Edirne, Turkey. We used the "parent-school collaboration scale" to collect research data. The scale contains 30 items and 5 subscales. ANOVA (Analysis of variance) was used in the analysis of the data, and in cases where the difference between population means was significant, LSD (the least significant difference) test statistical techniques were used to determine the source of the difference. Interdimensional relationships were determined by the Pearson correlation coefficient technique. There is a recursive relationship between the parents' collaborative attitude and their communication with the school. If the level of communication between parents and other stakeholders in the school increases, the attitude towards collaboration with the school will also be more positive. According to the research findings, the importance of parents sharing information about their children is emerging
The development of a science, technology and society phenomenon-based learning model for promoting grade 12 students’ problem-solving in geohazard
This research aimed to: a) synthesize the Science, Technology, and Society Phenomenon-based Learning Model (STS-PhBL) for teaching Geoharzard to students; and b) compare students’ problem-solving skills prior to and after the STS-PhBL lessons on the Geoharzard topic. The sample consisted of 39 Grade 12 students enrolled in the first semester of the 2021 academic year at one secondary school in Surin Province, Thailand. The data collection methods included the panel of experts’ evaluation of STS-PhBL lesson plans and the Problem-Solving Skills Test. The Index of Item-Objective-Congruence (IOC) of STS-PhBL lesson plans on Geoharzard was calculated. Also, the students’ problem-solving skills prior to and after the STS-PhBL lessons in the Geoharzard topic were analyzed by using the paired-samples t-test. The researchers synthesized a new STS-PhBL model from the intensive literature review, consisting of seven teaching steps: a) stimulate the phenomenon; b) identify problems in the phenomenon; c) explore the answer to the targeted problem; d) construct new knowledge; e) reflect on learning; f) exchange and share learning; and g) apply knowledge. The STS-PhBL lesson plans on Geoharzard met the IOC requirements. After learning STS-PhBL lessons, the students significantly improved their problem-solving skills at the 0.05 statistically significant level
