PARTIAL ARITHMETIC CONSENSUS BASED DISTRIBUTED INTENSITY PARTICLE FLOW SMC-PHD FILTER FOR MULTI-TARGET TRACKING
Intensity Particle Flow (IPF) SMC-PHD has been proposed recently for multi-target tracking. In this paper, we extend IPF-SMC-PHD filter to distributed setting, and develop a novel consensus method for fusing the estimates from individual sensors, based on Arithmetic Average (AA) fusion. Different from conventional AA method which may be degraded when unreliable estimates are presented, we develop a novel arithmetic consensus method to fuse estimates from each individual IPF-SMC-PHD filter with partial consensus. The proposed method contains a scheme for evaluating the reliability of the sensor nodes and preventing unreliable sensor information to be used in fusion and communication in sensor network, which help improve fusion accuracy and reduce sensor communication costs. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed algorithm over the uncooperative IPF-SMC-PHD and distributed particle-PHD with AA fusion
Role of Perceived Events in University Graduates' Job Search Self-efficacy and Success
This study aims to enrich job search literature by examining the unique role of perceived job search events in predicting job search self-efficacy (JSSE) and two job search outcomes (i.e., perceived job search progress, the number of job offers) during the school-to-work transition. Two hundred and fourteen Chinese university graduates were asked to describe two representative job search events (one positive and one negative) and rate them on multiple dimensions (i.e., frequency, novelty, disruptiveness, criticality, and controllability). Content analysis reveals five categories of positive events (i.e., good preparation, social support, positive feedback, fair treatment, good luck) and five categories of negative events (i.e., inadequate preparation, fierce competition, negative feedback, unfair treatment, bad luck). Results from a two-wave study show that after individual differences in self-regulation strengths (i.e., proactive personality, approach-avoidance traits, core self-evaluation, career adaptability), baseline levels of JSSE and job search success are controlled (measured at Time 1), event content and dimensions account for 13% of the variance in JSSE at Time 2, which partially mediates the effects of criticality and novelty of positive events on perceived progress and number of job offers at Time 2. Additionally, negative events controllability and positive events frequency are directly related to perceived progress and number of offers, respectively, which JSSE cannot explain. This study advances the current understanding of the conceptualization and effects of job search events
Towards consensus in conceptualizing and operationalizing physical activity maintenance
Recognized challenges in promoting long-term physical activity maintenance may be due to inconsistencies in the conceptualization and operationalization of behavior maintenance terminology in physical activity research. The overall goal of this paper is to propose a framework and agenda for the development of a common set of terms, definitions, and measures for physical activity maintenance concepts that can be widely tested and evaluated. To initiate this effort, this paper (1) provides an overview of conceptual and operational definitions of physical activity maintenance used in the empirical literature; (2) evaluates whether behavior maintenance terms used in addiction science can be translated to physical activity, (3) recommends research directions for developing consensus definitions of physical activity maintenance; and (4) proposes a conceptual model of physical activity maintenance with inflection points that require operational definitions to be decided upon through consensus efforts in the field. Consensus over the conceptualization and operationalization of physical activity maintenance is needed to draw conclusions regarding which policies and programs are best able to promote long-term behavior change.</p
Marginal Instability of Matrix Systems
"We study the size of products of matrices taken from a finite set of matrices. In particular we describethe maximal growth rate of the norms of products of matrices from our set. For a set of matriceswe define an associated “FMIRF” to be the function mapping a natural number n to the maximumof the norm of all possible n length products from our set. Switching systems are models definedby a finite set of matrices, by understanding the associated FMIRF, we gain insight into the stabilityof the switching system. Switching systems have attracted a lot of interest from control theorists,as they pose a complex challenge and as they have a wide range of applications. Switching systemsare needed to describe systems in nature and engineering, because such systems do not fit a singlemodel and exhibit switching between different models depending on various environments. Zhendongand Shuzi have uncovered many tools for analysing nonlinear behaviour in switching systems. Wefocus on switching systems with FMIRFs that grow slower than exponentially, such FMIRFs are calledmarginally unstable. We are interested in the different possible rates of growth a marginally unstablesystem can achieve, significant research by Jungers, Protasov and Blondel in 2008 showed that inparticular cases marginally unstable systems grow like a polynomial. This is not the case though forall systems and in 2015 Jungers and Protasov released an example of a FMIRF with sublinear growth. We prove that their example is bounded almost everywhere and adapt it to achieve other sublineargrow rates. We show that if we have a set of two dimensional matrices then the corresponding FMIRFhas bounded growth or linear growth. We prove that if we have a set containing a single matrix thethe corresponding FMIRF grows like a polynomial. This begs the question, does the cardinality of ourset always affect the possible growth of the corresponding FMIRF? We prove that, given a FMIRFassociated to finite sets of matrices it is possible to construct a set of two matrices with a FMIRFthat has the same growth. We also explore the effect of taking direct and Kronecker products on setsof matrices has on their associated FMIRFs. Finally instead of starting with a set of matrices we startwith a function that maps from a dynamical system onto a matrix of θ-H¨older continuous functions. In this more general setting we show how the generalised FMIRF’s growth depends on the θ-H¨oldercontinuous functions. An example of a generalised FMIRF with unbounded but sublinear growth isgiven.
Electroencephalogram Connectivity for the Diagnosis of Psychogenic Non-epileptic Seizures
Abstract - Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are attacks that resemble epilepsy but are not associated with epileptic brain activity and are regularly misdiagnosed. The current gold standard method of diagnosis is expensive and complex. Electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis with machine learning could improve this. A k-nearest neighbours (kNN) and support vector machine (SVM) were used to classify EEG connectivity measures from 48 patients with PNES and 29 patients with epilepsy. The synchronisation method-correlation or coherence-and the binarisation threshold were defined through experimentation. Ten network parameters were extracted from the synchronisation matrix. The broad, delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma, and combined 'all' frequency bands were compared along with three feature selection methods: the full feature set (no selection), light gradient boosting machine (LGBM) and k-Best. Coherence was the highest performing synchronisation method and 0.6 was the best coherence threshold. The highest balanced accuracy was 89.74%, produced by combining all six frequency bands and selecting features with LGBM, classified by the SVM. This method returned a comparatively high accuracy but at a high computation cost. Future research should focus on identifying specific frequency bands and network parameters to reduce this cost. Clinical relevance - This study found that EEG connectivity and machine learning methods can be used to differentiate PNES from epilepsy using interictal recordings to a high accuracy. Thus, this method could be an effective tool in assisting clinicians in PNES diagnosis without a video-EEG recording of a habitual seizure.</p
Poor Air Quality in Urban Settings: A Comparison of Perceptual Indicators, Causes and Management in Two Cities
Poor air quality (PAQ) is a global concern, especially in urban areas, and is often seen as an important element of social sustainability given its negative impact on health and quality of life. However, little research has been undertaken in cities of the developing world to explore how residents perceive poor air quality, its main causes, what control measures should be used to address PAQ and where the main responsibility rests for implementing control measures. The research described in this paper sought to address these points, using a questionnaire-based survey (n = 262) in Nigeria's federal capital city of Abuja (n = 137) and the state-capital city of Enugu (n = 125). The survey took place during the COVID-19 pandemic (October 2020 to March 2021), and was stratified to ensure representation across a number of demographic groups such as gender, age, education and income. The results were analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test and Hochberg's post hoc test available in SPSS version 28. The study found that the ranking of perceptual indicators and the main causes of PAQ had much agreement between respondents from both cities and between demographic groups. Smoke, odour and dust particles were perceived to be the most important indicators of PAQ, while the main sources of PAQ were waste and bush burning, vehicle use and power generators. The two most preferred control measures were proper waste management and the avoidance of bush burning. However, there was a significant difference between the two cities in terms of the main organisations responsible for addressing PAQ, with respondents from Abuja citing the federal government, while those from Enugu cited the state government. Interestingly, younger people in Enugu noted that the government should take more responsibility in controlling PAQ than did the older demographic in that city, but this difference was not seen in Abuja. Overall, this study reveals that residents in these two Nigerian cities clearly recognise their exposure to PAQ and it suggests that these perceptual indicators, and views on sources and interventions should be central to designing policies to control this important issue
Promoting postcolonial destinations: Paradoxical relations between decolonization and ‘East meets West’
The ‘East meets West’ concept has been widely used by tourism promotion agencies and destination management organizations engaged in marketing postcolonial tourism destinations in Asia. However, the decolonized identity-making process behind this tourism promotion concept is neglected in the literature. This paper explores the identity-making behind the ‘East meets West’ tourism promotion of the Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions of China. Through critical discourse analysis of tourism promotional texts and in-depth interviews with tourism and cultural experts, the findings reveal that, although tourism has been used effectively as a tool to decolonize Hong Kong and Macau and reposition them as Chinese cities, power struggles influence the repositioning of the two cities as ‘East meets West’, with very distinct impacts on the cities' identities and tourism promotion. Tourism management implications are outlined for both destinations as well as future research avenues related to the study findings and limitations
