Innovation in farming: Drivers of adoption of Precision Agriculture amongst farmers
The recent changes in technological innovations in agriculture in the last decades are radically changing the paradigm of traditional cultivation techniques and these have already been the subject of research for some time. The present study aims to review the new trends of digital technologies adoption in precision agriculture. Starting from theoretical study models such as the Agriculture Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS), the Agricultural Innovation System (AIS) and the new modeling of the Farm Management Information System (FMIS), a review was carried out with the aim of identifying emerging adoption drivers for the implementation of precision agriculture technologies. To do this, 19 papers were analyzed in the period 2018-2021 that included empirical investigations. The results of the survey confirm the new adoption trends where, in addition to the size of the agricultural company, the geographical position and the financial resources, sociodemographic factors are included and above all the new emerging trend linked to environmental benefits
Analysis of the food problem in the Republic of Kazakhstan
The purpose of the study is to assess the food security of Kazakhstan and analyze the production and consumption of food. The methods that were used are the dialectical method of scientific knowledge, general scientific, special methods, and statistical analysis. The article identifies such priority areas: the production of their own food, the use of innovative, resource-saving technologies in agriculture; integrated use of land resources, solving the problems of degraded pastures; attracting human resources, investments, and technologies to the industrial sector; implementation of the consolidation of agricultural land and the development of animal husbandry; opening of new export markets
The food system of Kazakhstan
The food system encompasses a range of activities and processes involved in the production, processing, distribution, consumption, and disposal of food products. It is linked to the well-being of citizens, serving as a pathway for ensuring food security, promoting economic growth, and fostering sustainable development. However, the modern food systems face many challenges due to rapid globalization, population growth, and mounting environmental challenges. Kazakhstan, as a state with a rich agricultural heritage, is a major producerand exporter of agricultural commodities. With its rich agricultural potential and strategic geographic location, Kazakhstan is well-positioned to play a role in addressing the challenges, though, numerous economic, social, and environmental factors should be considered
Food safety and traceability in specialty coffees: What do Brazilian consumers value?
This study aims to identify how aspects of food safety and traceability influence the consumption of specialty coffees from the consumers' perspective. Forty regular consumers of specialty coffees were interviewed. Aspects of food safety and traceability were identified and classified into formal and informal mechanisms. This research is a pioneer in addressing the importance of food safety aspects in the consumption of specialty coffees and can be a useful tool for agents responsible for marketing, farm management, consumer relations and sustainability of the specialty coffee production chain
Vulnerability to Resilience for Smallholder Small Grain Farmers. The Case of Semi-Arid Regions of Southern Zimbabwe
Small grain production provides hope for farmers in regions affected by climate change. This study determined the levels of smallholder small grain farmers’ vulnerability and resilience using data collected from four districts (Binga, Chiredzi, Hwange and Matobo) in Zimbabwe’s agro-ecological regions 1V and V. A mixed method approach was used to collect data from 281 respondents. A multistage sampling approach with purposive selection of districts dominant in small grain production was conducted. For each district, two wards were selected randomly. Stata version (16) was used to analyse data. Factor analysis and Agricultural drought index (ADRI) were used to quantify farmer vulnerability and resilience. Results show that 46.3% were in the medium vulnerability group while 26% were highly vulnerable. Districts on contract farming were less vulnerable than districts on non-contract. Farmer resilience varied with location with Chiredzi having highest (ADRI 4.56) and the least was Matobo (ADRI 3.32). The study made three recommendations; the production of improved small grain varieties in regions IV and V, the practice of conservation agriculture as an adaptation strategy to climate change, aggressive enforcement of agricultural policies relating to the production of small grain on contract farming
Smallholder conflicts in agribusiness systems
Conflicts arise because of deficient coordination between actors during the exchange of goods and services in agribusiness systems. The aim of the study was to assess conflicts at the smallholder level by reviewing literature resources. From the systemic analysis, it is evident that price imposition is the main conflict that smallholders face during commercialization with suppliers and agro-industries. Conflicts arise due to the high bargaining power of large corporations. The concentration of companies in input supply and processing markets also generates conflict environments during transactions. Collective forms and the use of contracts are conflict mitigation alternatives in agrifood chains
Clusters as a tool for improving the efficiency of the dairy industry
Unbalanced relations between all participants of the food chain in the dairy business hinder the development of the livestock sector. Implementation of cluster policy in dairy cattle breeding enables the development of a competitive reference standard using benchmarking analysis. For the full and comprehensive development of the dairy cluster, it is necessary to observe organisational independence to meet the economic interests of all participants. The developed mechanism acts as the basis of a new area of economic analysis that measures synergetic results possible only within the framework of cluster system economic interaction in dairy cattle breeding
Assessing the impact of innovations in the food industry on labour productivity
The research aims to assess the degree of dependence between innovation and productivity of medium-sized enterprises to further improve Kazakhstan’s innovation policy and identify ways to implement it. In the process, methods of analysis were used with the help of an open-source statistical program “gretl”, and data comparison from the position of positive innovation effect concerning the segment of medium-sized enterprises. The results demonstrate that innovation (production and process) is positively influenced by the internal costs of research and development, as well as the availability of patents and the size of the enterprise itself
Exploring consumer attitudes toward reusable takeaway packaging: An empirical study in Germany
Since the introducing of the new German packaging law 'VerpackG2' in January 2023, food service operators in Germany selling takeout food have been mandated to provide reusable packaging alternatives to single-use plastic food containers. This change in legislation has led to the emergence of various reusable consumer packaging systems in the German market. Reusable packaging systems have the potential to significantly reduce the negative environmental impact of single-use plastic packaging. However, for these systems to succeed and achieve their desired positive environmental impact, a comprehensive understanding of consumer behavior toward these systems is needed. This study extends the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) framework to identify the factors influencing consumers' intentions to use a reusable packaging system for takeaway food in the German food service industry. An online survey was developed, and 153 valid responses were collected from consumers in Germany. Structural equation modeling revealed that in this study, consumers' personal moral norms, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control directly influence consumers' intentions to use the reusable packaging system. The results also show that context, motivation, and personal moral norms are positively related to consumers' attitudes, and context significantly positively affects consumers' perceived behavioral control. Furthermore, the study's results indicate that despite the high frequency of takeaway food orders in Germany, consumers' use of reusable packaging systems for takeaway food still needs to be improved
Flavours of wanderlust: tourist segmentation and the pull of famous local food outlets
Local food plays an important role in delivering a memorable experience to tourists. In fact, previous research has identified various types of tourists, based upon their commitment to eating and their interest in local dishes and food habits. This paper makes a novel contribution, as no previous studies to date, have explored the priority of selection factors for dining in famous local food outlets according to various segments of tourists, which are segmented as per the relevance of local gastronomy in their destination selection. To achieve the proposed objectives, a structured questionnaire has been used to find out the opinion of diners in the outlets which base their offerings on traditional preparations made with quality local ingredients, in the city of Amritsar- regarded as the food capital of Punjab. The study identifies and validates three segment of tourists using cluster and discriminant analysis respectively. Selection factors prioritized by each segments, are assessed using Garrett ranking technique. Implications of this research are beneficial for proprietors of food outlets, government and all other stakeholders associated with gastronomy tourism. Future research can study the association between dining experience and satisfaction of tourists in famous local food outlets, as per the identified segmentation
