Stakeholder Growth Platforms for the Development of Food Sector Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs): A case study experience from Wales, United Kingdom

Project HELIX 2016-2020 was developed and implemented in Wales, to improve technical/ safety/science knowledge; and sustainable innovation in food manufacturing small to medium enterprises (SMEs). The paper aims to place Project HELIX within the wider context of regional and food sector development and then examine the project's rationale and delivery methods in relation to this. It reflects on the effectiveness of the project (or otherwise) in constructing regional advantage from knowledge transfer and knowledge spillovers. Finally, the paper identifies areas of further research both in terms of the firm level and in relation to other food sector initiatives more generally

Strengthening the Value Chain Resilience of Indonesian Agricultural Fintech in the Aftermath of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the default rate for Indonesian agricultural fintech remained elevated at seven percent. Agricultural fintech companies and their farmers must develop a strategy for the agricultural fintech value chain resilience. This descriptive study aims to develop risk mitigation and recovery strategies for agricultural fintech in Indonesia. It uses a survey to gather data from fintech value chain actors, which is then analysed using the House of Risk model. The priorities are cash flow management, the minimum payment amount and leeway, the harvest price contract, the procurement of seed and fertilizer agro-inputs, and the harvest supply contract

Investigating the Dynamics and Trends of Sustainable Food Systems in Ethiopia: Characterizing the National Performance within the Global Context

This paper assesses the trends of Sustainable Food System in Ethiopia, and how the various indicators evolved over time in the four food system dimensions: environmental, economic, social, and food and nutrition security. We employed quartile analysis to evaluate the relative performance of Ethiopia vis-à-vis the rest of the world by grouping the latter into lower quartile, median, and upper quartile based on their performance. The result revealed that while some positive strides have been achieved in reducing poverty headcount ratio over the past two decades, a high proportion of stunting and undernourishment, high variability of food supply, the slow-onset of adult obesity, and poor access to basic facilities for food utilization, especially when compared to the countries in the lower, median and upper quartiles, remain to be formidable challenges calling for the attention of policymakers

Food security in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan: Challenges and strategies for economic and sustainable development

The study aims to analyse the current mechanisms of state regulation of food security in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan to identify and assess their effectiveness. Among the methods used were analytical, statistical, functional, method of system analysis, deduction, synthesis, and comparison. A comparative analysis of state regulation of food security in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan was conducted, leading to recommendations for enhancing regulatory measures. Suggestions include integrating new agricultural technologies, fostering international partnerships, and learning from other nations' exfperiences. The study also highlighted opportunities for sustainable agricultural development, product quality improvement, and ensuring food accessibility across various population segments in both regions

Determinants and effects of food waste in restaurants: A systematic literature review

Food Loss and Waste (FLW) has primarily focused on quantifying causes. This article organizes literature on FLW determinants and effects in restaurants, analyzing 80 articles from Scopus and Web of Science. Findings reveal FLW in restaurants, which is determined by consumer behavior, restaurant management, and public policies, has economic and environmental effects. The study emphasizes the importance of investing in employee training and policies promoting FLW reduction. It also underscores the need for educating consumers on responsible consumption. Implementing these measures will contribute to fostering sustainable and efficient food systems, minimizing the adverse effects of food waste

Economic efficiency of on-farm land management in agricultural organizations

Good land management provides protection against land degradation for long-term and effective use. A survey was conducted among students in Kazakhstan for an internal assessment of the education quality. It was found that for ensuring competent land management, state financial support and external investment have to meet the needs for working capital and improve the quality of the material and technical base and staff; the quality education of new experts and their motivation have to be ensured; innovations introduction in the agricultural sector and long-term planning with centralized control have prospects for increasing economic efficiency

Differentiated voting and membership composition – the case of a large Swedish dairy cooperative

This study comprises theoretical and empirical analyses of differentiated voting rights in the governance of agricultural cooperatives with self-interest seeking members. A survey was conducted among representative samples of members and General Assembly delegates of a large Swedish dairy cooperative while two important decisions were under consideration. Because of the equal voting rights regime, the majority of small-scale farmers encouraged the General Assembly to reject both efficiency-raising measures. However, if the large-scale farmers had had more voting power, both proposals would have been accepted. Because of limited spatial competition, the large-scale members could not “voting by their feet”

Factors and socio-economic aspects that influence willingness to pay (WTP) for Peruvian organic quinoa

This study analyzes the factors and socio-economic aspects involved in willingness to pay (WTP) for organic quinoa in Peru. The primary data were collected between September 2020 and August 2021 in the Lima Metropolitan area. A binomial logistic, probit and gamma model were conducted. The main outcomes identified by the logit and probit models showed that (i) a counterintuitive sign in the attitude factor with respect to conventional quinoa, (ii) ethnic identity and (iii) women and people with higher education have more probability of WTP. Despite the general raised awareness of the need for good health and the perception of quinoa being a quality functional food, the health construct was non-significant in the model. The gamma model showed that monthly family expenditure and quinoa consumption had a significant effect on WTP

Exploring Possibilities of Implmenting A “Long-Short” Supply Chain Within The Fair Trade Sector With Blockchain Technology

The fair trade approach offers a model for changing production and consumption patterns, but has always been a niche market and is currently suffering from overproduction, insofar as not all production produced under fair trade schemes finds takers in this specific market. With the implementation of blockchain technology (BCT) in fair trade supply chains, the question is if it is possible to (re)create the link (or to emphasize the existing one) between fair trade producers and consumers, even if there are many intermediaries and long geographical distances between them. With a literature review to explore the expectations of consumers on fair trade products and a case study in Bolivia to explore possibilities to provide information on production and producers from the point of origin, this research focuses on the possibilities of using BCT to link both ends of the supply chain within the fair trade sector
