Identifying pathways for food system transformation: Unusual solutions for improving food system performance

Whereas numerous studies are available that describe the structure and components of food systems, far less attention is usually given to the analysis of drivers for food system change. Since such transformations take place at the interface of multiple stakeholders’ interests, involve the use of multiple instruments and may lead to multiple outcomes, it is of foremost importance to understand the underlying dynamics of food system transformation processes. This article identifies different leverage points for improving dietary outcomes and outlines analytical perspectives on three possible interventions along the food value chain that go further than just ‘solving the problem’. Real systems solutions intend to address fundamental interactions within the food system and thus provide unusual solutions to change its dynamics. This opens the way to new insights on appropriate policies and innovative incentives for steering food system transformation processes

High environmental value (HEV) certification: sharing of costs and risks among value-chain stakeholders

We have recently witnessed the emergence of many farm certification schemes whose common objective is to identify and promote certain agroecological practices with a view to attaining environmental goals and meeting consumer expectations. Our study evaluated how farmers are economically impacted when adopting France’s voluntary high environmental value (HEV) certification scheme. Focusing on multiple crop types and interacting with multiple stakeholders, we estimated the added costs and coordination requirements engendered by HEV certification. Our results show that these costs can increase in a crop-dependent manner. Thus, to further encourage the spread of the HEV certification scheme, it is essential to improve coordination and cost-sharing among value-chain stakeholders. In its latest CAP Strategic Plan, France proposed supporting HEV-certified farms via the European Union’s eco-scheme instrument, which should provide an additional boost

Mechanisms for improving the economic efficiency of livestock development in the Republic of Kazakhstan

The results are based on the systematisation of the information studied, which highlights the trends in the development of the livestock industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan from 2018 to 2022, considering the foreign experience in the development of the industry, which determined the optimal mechanisms for improving the economic efficiency of the livestock industry in Kazakhstan. The balance of Kazakhstan's foreign trade was calculated

Competitiveness of Kazakhstan’s agrifood systems: Opportunities and growth factors

The purpose of this study is the assessment of the competitiveness of the agro-industrial complex of Kazakhstan and the analysis of potential growth opportunities. Retrospective, dynamic, and structural analysis are the basis for assessing the current state of the agro-industrial sector. The analysis revealed weaknesses in the logistics infrastructure and a preponderance of antiquated and depreciated agricultural equipment, impeding production and quality. Despite the fact that investments were made easier by official support programmes, sector profitability remained poor. Modernising production assets, combining smallholder farms, and encouraging sustainable practices to boost long-term competitiveness are some of the major prospects found

The article is aimed at disclosing statistical information on the production and processing of milk in the Akmola Region and Kazakhstan and drawing up a plan to improve the environmental and economic efficiency of dairy enterprises. The leading approach is the synthesis method, with the help of which a plan was developed to improve the environmental and economic efficiency of dairy enterprises in the Akmola Region. The results: statistics on the production and processing of milk for the period of 2016-2022 trends in the production and processing of milk in Kazakhstan and in the Akmola

Information Avoidance with Regard to Pig Farming and Its Implications for Communication Strategies of The Agricultural Livestock Sector

In the agri-food industry, public relations work relies on consumers who are willing to receive information. However, studies have shown that people often avoid using information, a behavior known as information avoidance. Sweeny et al. (2010) identify three main motives for this behavior: avoiding negative effects on action, affect or cognition. Currently, the effectiveness of agribusiness communication strategies and information formats in improving acceptance and trust in intensive livestock farming may be limited. There have been no published studies to date that address the suitability of communication strategies employed by the agri-food industry in light of information avoidance and its underlying motives, particularly with regard to pig farming. This present exploratory study aims to fill this research gap. The study employed Howell and Shepperd's (2016) 8-item information avoidance scale to measure the relationship between the occurrence and impact of three motives for information avoidance and information avoidance in pig farming. The influence of sociodemographics, personality-related characteristics and level of acceptance regarding pig farming on information avoidance has been tested in addition to the basic model specification. The impact of the motives for information avoidance showed some significant results on tendency to avoid information. Expected contradiction to one's own beliefs (cognition) has a negative effect on information avoidance, while expected negative effects on affect has a positive impact on information avoidance. This findings align with the meat paradox, which is a form of dissonance. Consumers use information avoidance as a strategy to reduce emotional discomfort caused by moral contradictions. Therefore images, formulations or information content that tend to be seen as emotionally charged regarding animals should not be used for public relations work. Suitable target groups for public relations work are primarily intellectually open-minded people who are, according to our results, interested in new information, even if this could create a contradictory image to their previous attitudes. In addition, people who are completely opposed to pig farming are generally interested in information on this topic and could therefore potentially be reached well with factual information and neutral arguments. Furthermore, it has been shown that consumers with a low level of acceptance of pig farming tend to avoid information on the subject. It is important to consider this when preparing and disseminating information about pig farming, as it could limit the success of public relations work in the agricultural industry

How to select and evaluate collective agroindustrial projects: Proposal for an analysis methodology

Agroindustrial projects developed by agroindustrial collective actions play a relevant social and economic role. However, cases of failure are frequent. This work proposes a model for the evaluation and selection of projects developed by cooperatives and rural associations, considering their particularities. The method is based on a conceptual framework developed after a literature review, later validated by a panel of experts. The model was applied to six real projects located in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The results confirmed the technical feasibility of applying the method, allowing an ex ante and accurate prediction of which projects would have the greatest chance of success

Drivers of beer pricing in Argentina

This study uses web data from the retail beer segment to explore beer pricing dynamics in Argentina amid chronic inflation. We address three main questions: the impact of product attributes on pricing under high inflation, evolving pricing patterns over time, and the effect of the 2020 lockdown. Our analysis unveils the interplay between product attributes, seasonal trends, and inflationary pressures in shaping pricing strategies. While inflation drives rapid adjustments, seasonal trends and product attributes significantly influence pricing decisions. Consumers can benefit from insights into currency fluctuations, fuel costs, and seasonal variations. Beer industry managers can refine pricing strategies to maximize revenue potential amidst economic volatility

A new interpretation of the AISAS model: An empirical analysis of Chinese consumers’ perceptions of the food traceability system for aquatic and edible bird’s nest products

Consumer behavior has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic; however, the extent to which the traditional Attention, Interest, Search, Action, and Share (AISAS) consumer behavior model has been affected by the pandemic is underexplored. Simultaneously, food safety issues urgently require stronger protection due to the increasing demand for consumer health. This study aims to determine how the adoption of food traceability systems (FTS) influences consumer behavior and proposes a new interpretation of the AISAS model. Our findings confirm the validity of our model and provide theoretical support for the relationship between “trust” and “trace” in consumer behavior
