SUSCEPTIBILITY TO SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION OF SOME INDONESIAN COALS
Eight Indonesian coal samples of different moisture contents obtained from the various coalfi elds were used to study spontaneous combustion characteristics by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and crossing point temperature (CPT). Results indicate that there is no direct correlation between the spontaneous combustion test data and the individual properties of the coal samples by both DTA and CPT test methods; in this study, a preliminary conclusion can be drawn on the coal moisture content effect on spontaneous combustion. Higher moisture content coals are more susceptible to spontaneous combustion than that of lower moisture content coals. It also can be stated that the susceptibility of coal to spontaneous combustion is basically a complex. Clearly more tests are required to investigate the effect of coal properties in more detail from other Indonesian coals that have various types and ranks
PRODUCTION OF ACTIVATED CARBON FROM SUBBITUMINOUS COAL USING ROTARY KILN AND CYCLONE BURNER
Research on the production of activated carbon from coal has been carried out by Research and Develop- ment Center for Mineral and Coal Technology since 1980 in the laboratory as well as pilot plant scale. Production of activated carbon from coal using rotary kiln and oil burner at the pilot plant of 1 ton/day has been carried out successfully to produce good quality product. To reduce the dependence upon using oil fuel, the oil fuel burner was replaced by coal fueled cyclone burner. Product quality and economic evalua- tion of the production of activated carbon using the burners are described in this paper. The coal used was subbituminous coal from Air Laya, South Sumatera. The coal passing 3 cm screen was carbonized at 500- 600° C for 2 hours to produce good quality char. The variables of activation process observed were con- sisted of particle size of char (+6, -6+12 and -12 +20 mesh) and residence time (1.5, 3 and 6 hours). The results showed that the optimum condition for activation process was using particle size of -6+12 mesh and residence time at a minimum of 3 hours. The activated carbon produced showed quality which fairly met the requirement of Indonesian Industrial Standard with iodine number of 600-800 mg/g compared with stan- dard of 750-1200 mg/g and market quality of 400-1200 mg/g. Eventhough the adsorption capacity obtained was at the lowest limit of the Indonesian Industrial Standard, however the pre utilization test showed that the product could be used for treatment of shrimp farms water
IMPLEMENTATION IMPACT OF LAW NO. 4 YEAR 2009 ON MINERAL AND COAL MINING TOWARDS MINERAL AND COAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
The issuance of Law No. 4 Year 2009 on Mineral and Coal Mining has certainly an impact on the manage- ment of mineral and coal mining operations throughout Indonesia as the law brings lots of new issues related to the regional autonomy that is contradictive to the previous issued regulation, i.e. Law No. 11 Year 1967 regarding centralized Main Guidelines on Mining. Surveys to several regions and business operation show that various problems have occurred. It needs early action to avoid bigger problems that will create a negative impact to the investment climate in mineral and coal mining sector, and will eventually hinder the improvement of people welfare
GEOLOGIC AND PETROGRAPHIC ASPECTS FOR COAL EXPLORATION IN SANGATTA-EAST KALIMANTAN
The Miocene Sangatta coals indicate similarities and differences in type and rank characteristics. The phenomena express the geological setting that includes the stratigraphic aspect and the pres- ence of intrusive body. The stratigraphic aspect relates to geologic age and cover thickness; the lower coal seam having a thicker cover has a higher rank than the upper coal seam. The intrusive body changes the rank of the coal up to semi-anthracite. The coals that are not affected by the intrusion have rank of brown coal to subbituminous. The rank of the coals increases from east to west toward the Meratus Range due to the cover thickness, where the western part has a thicker cover than the eastern part. These geological phenomena could be an exploratory target for the prospective coals
