Dreaming With a Future: Queer Memory Beyond National Trauma
This article examines queer memory in Peru through the works of artists Christian Benday.n, Barboza-Gubo and Mroczek, and the collective No Tengo Miedo. I suggest that they construct alternative memories to the hegemonic one, as they denounce the violence against the LGBTIQ population during the years of political violence (1980-2000)
Deafness and Use of Sign Language: A Cross Cultural Survey
This survey examines the cross-cultural perspectives of Deafness and Sign Language. Thirty individuals residing in the United States and thirty individuals residing in South Korea ranging from the ages 18-64 participated in an online survey. Individuals residing in South Korea had greater negative perspectives of Deafness and were more likely to use sign language as their child’s primary mode of communication than individuals residing in the United States. Individuals living in the United States may have a more positive perception towards Deafness resulting from a greater awareness of alternative communication modalities. Individuals residing in South Korea may appear to have a more positive perception of sign language due to the lack of awareness of alternative communication modalities.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/posters/1004/thumbnail.jp
Restorative Practices
Research consistently shows that suspensions are ineffective in addressing the root causes for behavior and inequities as students of color, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and students with dis/abilities repeatedly receive high rates of exclusionary punishments for their behaviors. Different schools have implemented Restorative Practices, an alternative discipline policy in response to the troubling data surrounding suspension disparities. This policy encourages students to collaboratively address their behavior and discuss ways that they can restore relationships within their community. Through observations and faculty interviews at an elementary school, salient information emerged on the policies\u27 definitions, implementations, and critiques. The Invasion of the Southern Pine Bark Beetle
The Southern Pine Bark Beetle is a pest that is native to the south eastern United States. Historically the population has been held to southern parts of the nation due to the harsher cold weather in the north. During the last twenty years there has been an increase in average annual temperatures on the east coast. This has allowed the species to move northward and afflict unprotected softwoods at a high rate. The objective of this project was to observe the movement of the Southern Pine Bark Beetles between 2012 and a population estimate for 2027 made by the USDA Forest Service. I was able to graph this potential movement using the ArcMaps software as well as determine spots that are likely to be heavily effected.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/slides/1011/thumbnail.jp
Child Protection Services: The Developmental Consequences of Arbitrary Removal (2020-2021)
This research inquiry example details the developmental consequences for children removed from their biological homes by Children’s Services. Jackson uses sources to discuss physical, mental, and emotional implications for removing children from their homes or parents in their future development as both children and adults. Musical Shoes Shine a New Light on the Clinical World
This study focused on the application of a unique technology designed originally to supply biofeedback to dancers, but in this case was used to assist a child learning to walk while battling the effects of Cerebral Palsy. The music shoes, called “Electroskip”, utilize a biofeedback system that generates different sounds/beats/songs when an individual is walking and placing pressure on their heel or toe. The study lasted six weeks with 2 sessions per week. While the Electroskip technology was worn for each session, it was only activated every other session. Data indicated that at the end of the study the child was able to walk better based on a comparison of pre and post study scores from the Test of Gross Motor Development II (TGMD-II) evaluation instrument administered by the director of the SIMs Laboratory on campus.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/slides/1000/thumbnail.jp
Effects of spinal manipulation on physiological and psychological measures during an acute bout of submaximal running 2020
Purpose – To study the effects of spinal manipulation on running economy, running efficiency and psychological measures associated with a running effort. Methods – Twelve healthy adults, five women and seven men, (ages 18-40 years) participated in the cross-over design study where over a three-week period they were asked to attend two test sessions: a Control session and an Experimental session. During each test session, a participant performed a 3-minute Queens College Step Test (QCST) to determine an estimate of VO2 max followed by two 5-minute bouts of treadmill running at an estimated 80% VO2 max pace during which expired gas was collected and analyzed at 30 second intervals. During the first test session, each participant was randomly assigned to the Experimental (spinal manipulation) group or the Control group. In the second test session they were assigned to the other group. Participants assigned to the Experimental group during a test session received a spinal manipulation at the 15-minute mark of the 20-minute rest period between the first and second treadmill run. Participants assigned to the Control group test session did not experience a spinal manipulation during the rest period. Additionally, during each test session four psychological questionnaires were completed (two subjective, two perceptual) to document participant reactions to the QCST and reactions to the running efforts in the Experimental and Control phases of the study.
Measures – Two sets of measures were recorded in this study, physiological and psychological. The physiological measures were VO2 consumption, respiratory exchange ratio (RER) and running economy (RE). The psychological measures were relative perceived exertion (RPE), the Feelings Scale (FS), Attentional Thoughts Scale (ATS) and the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES).

Conclusion – Changes from pre- to post-treatment trials for two of the seven measures were statistically significantly different between the Control and Experimental phases and supported the thesis hypotheses. Desirable changes of practical importance were noted in six of the seven measures. The implications both physiologically and psychologically trend towards concluding that spinal manipulation of a trained running population can have a performance enhancing effect
