The effects of a loaded pre-competition activity using tethered swimming on 25-yard swim sprint performance 2021
Get PDFWarmup is a standard practice for swim competitions, but there is minimal scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of pre-competition activities (PCA) after the swim warmup. This study examined whether a loaded PCA using tethered swimming while attached to a power rack improves performance in a 25-yard swim sprint. Post activation performance enhancement (PAPE) may be the proposed mechanism for improvement resulting from a loaded PCA. To determine if PAPE existed following the loaded PCA, varsity swimmers from SUNY Cortland performed a 25-yard sprint a loaded PCA and after an unloaded PCA (control). All participants performed a standard meet warmup (1600-yards) prior to completing the unloaded or loaded PCA. To counterbalance the swim trials, half the participants completed the loaded PCA during the first swim trial then completed the unloaded PCA during the second trial which took place forty-eight hours later, and vice versa for the other half of the sample. A paired samples t-test revealed no significant differences when comparing average group 25-yard time (s) after the loaded PCA and unloaded PCA (p \u3e .05). However, fifteen of the twenty-two participants (68% of the sample) improved their 25-yard sprint times following the loaded PCA with a 1.62% percent improvement (0.23 seconds) compared to the unloaded PCA on average

GIS Analysis Using Archived UAS Data of Ice Jam Flooding in Plymouth, NH
No full textThis poster reports on GIS analysis performed on archived UAS data of the Plymouth, NH ice jam of February 2017. Ice jams are a costly occurrence throughout the northern CONUS as noted by the USACE Ice Jam Database (2020). Media Wing Airshark collected the imagery data under contract with the USGS National UAS Program Office (2017) and rapidly processed it for delivery the day following the flight. Data collected with a DJI Inspire 1 with FC550 sensor for image collection over four miles of the Pemigewasset River resulted in a final 3 cm resolution mosaic image of the ice jam impacted area. We accessed the data set from USGS Earth Explorer and processed it with ArcGIS and Pix4D. First, we examined the aerial mosaic of the ice flow in relation to prior high resolution aerial photos. We compare DEMs derived from the aerial imagery with 1 meter resolution USGS DEMs of the area at ten transect locations located along the river. We also compare the image mosaic with FEMA National Flood Hazard to assess spatial extent of the ice jam flooding in relation to expected flood extents. GIS analysis of the UAS data at transects illustrate the extent of the ice jam and demonstrate utility of rapid data collection with UAS for flood response.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/posters/1024/thumbnail.jp
Synthesizing River Water Quality Data Studies of Trace Metals in Dhaka, Bangladesh
No full textOver the course of the last several decades, largescale increases of various industries such as textiles and electronics have swept through Southeast Asia and Africa. In favor of maximum production of cheap products, many nations within these regions have set very lenient environmental regulations on dumping industrial waste within its waterways. One such nation that abides by this philosophy is Bangladesh, which has seen a steady uptick of pollution in the Turag-Buriganga river system which runs through its capital and main industrial hub of Dhaka. The aim of this study is to synthesize published studies in the Dhaka region from 2005 to 2015 on trace metal concentrations such as Chromium and Copper as well as to present and analyze the data using ArcGIS. \u27Disembodied Bones\u27: recovering the poetry and prose of Elinor Wylie 2021
Get PDFPicking a book to read is like diving for a pearl, writes Elinor Wylie, a 20th Century American poet, novelist, essayist and prominent magazine literary editor. In her essay The Pearl Diver , she writes that it is the diver that risks the unknown- unaided by diving equipment in the form of library indexes-who gains the greatest joy, Wylie states (Fugitive Prose, 869). Wylie explains:
I venture to perceive an analogy between the rebellious pearl diver and myself, in my slight experience with public libraries...how much more delightful, how much more stimulating, to abandon the paraphernalia of card indexes and mahogany desks and slip unhampered into cool water; to snatch in the middle of a bursting breath the adventurous jewel or antique coin upon which one\u27s fingers chance to fall! (869)
Today, it would take an unaided dive into the depths of the literary shoals that sank precious artworks to find the four novels and four poetry volumes Wylie gave the world in eight shining years.
It was a Providential, unaided dive that brought me to Wylie\u27s jewels.I was perusing the free book tables in Suny Cortland\u27s English Department when I stumbled across the 1996 edition of The Norton Anthology of Literature by Women and clutched it as my very own. Later, I was looking through the anthology for a work by a different author when I stumbled upon Wylie\u27s Let No Charitable Hope , (1387). Here, in this poem, was the lived reality of womanhood. I marked the passage with a flashcard from my French class and came back to the author for my thesis.
By this time I had read much more of Wylie\u27s poetry and prose and conducted an informal survey of my professors: Wylie\u27s lyrical creations were unheard of and unknown. Here was a writer- a contemporary of Robert Frost and Ernest Himengway [sic]- who wrote of nature\u27s grace like Frost, adhered to style and allegory as strictly as Hemmingway [sic], and used masterful technique to elucidate the same themes of rugged individualism and the futility of war. An interdisciplinary approach: schizophrenia derails heteronormative expectations in psychological narratives 2021
Get PDFRequired introductory psychology courses teach students a general and oversimplified version of the immense number of subfields within Psychology studies, much like introductory literature classes compress different genera throughout history into a miniscule number of “representative” texts. Nevertheless, these footholds generate an entryway into a whole new world of (specialized) exploration. Reading a text such as The Quiet Room: A Journey out of the Torment of Madness by Lori Schiller and Amanda Bennett provides a window for many students to crawl into one of Psychology’s darkest shadows, the field of abnormal psychology. Schiller’s non-fictional memoir, The Quiet Room, tells readers about the experiences of living with schizophrenia. Since psychology maintains a focus on the narrative of the mind, it has an innate interest in non-fictional literature. However, fictional literature offers both Psychology and Literary Studies a window into unique forms and styles of psychological narratives, such as found in the novel The Drowning Girl: A Memoir by Caitlin Kiernan. The Quiet Room has a laser focuses on schizophrenia and presents an accurate account of the inner world of a mind plagued with the diverse and intrusive symptoms of the illness. Schiller’s memoir is a non-fictional recollection of Shiller’s own personal experiences with schizophrenia and offers an insider’s view into the illness. Schiller recounts her ten-year fight with her mental illness from the first onset to several suicide attempts, including living life after diagnosis, moving in and out of mental hospitals, struggling to find the right balance of medications, and eventually finding hope in a seemingly hopeless situation. The book is used in introductory psychology courses to familiarize undergraduate students with abnormal psychology due to its highly descriptive explanations of symptoms, treatments, side effects of neurological drugs, and even the affective reality of the impossibility of living a “normal” life The narrative is a collection of different perspectives including Schiller’s personal memories, 5 family members’ and friends’ inner circle viewpoints, formal hospital records, and Mental Health Professionals’ personal and professional remarks on Schiller’s case. This real-world perspective provides an in-depth understanding of the illness. It exposes the secrets persons with schizophrenia may hide from outsiders and explains why a person might hide those symptoms. In addition, Schiller’s parents’ reflections help to explain how their heteronormative expectations are unraveled as their awareness of the mental illness transforms into acceptance
