Networking Voices against Violence: Online Activism and Transnational Feminism in Local-Global Contexts
Get PDFContemporary feminism manifests itself in the form of blogs, hashtags, e-magazines, and digitally planned protests through online communities that address the prevailing concerns of feminists in the digital age. This feminist approach to digital activism aims to reclaim the power of technology which is inherently hegemonic and masculinist by creating alternate spaces and modes of protest. Transnational feminism is increasingly being shaped by online discourses and the new digital space enables social movements in shaping feminist solidarity and complex netizen identities. This paper adopts discourse analysis of online contents that question the prevalent patriarchal system in South Asia and thus situate it in the changing socio-cultural context globally. Popular hashtag movements in various countries such as #YesAllWomen, #notallmen, #MeToo, #SheInspiresMe, #WomenMarch4Change, #WhyLoiter, #IWillGoOut, #AuratMarch #GirlsAtDhabas, #SafeCityIndia #PinjraTod as well as other online forums which raise the voices of women against various forms of violence will be analysed with a view to uncover their multi- layered impact. These multifaceted discourses on gender-based violence have reached a wider audience across the world through social media, and academic webinars during the Covid-19 pandemic have also largely contributed to the debate. The resonance of these dialogues has transcended the local to the global level; a close study of the transnational character of these digital messages in social media aims to examine the strict demarcation between the public and the private, thus challenging the concept of gendered spaces. This paper employs a multidisciplinary approach to methodologically analyse the online resources and nature of activism in India and investigate its global relevance. Additionally, the paper will also explore how the online campaigns are establishing networks notwithstanding time and place, by interrogating and understanding the relationship between online activism and its significance in conceptualizing transnational feminism

Ecological Stressors Impact Soil Biodiversity
Get PDFSoil biodiversity serves ecologically important roles like nutrient cycling and is used as an indicator of community disturbance. North American forests host a multitude of ecological stressors, including invasive plants, earth worms, and deer abundance. While relationships between deer and invasive species, as well as relationships between macroinvertebrates and worms have been heavily investigated, the effects of invasive plant species like Pale Swallowwort on soil biodiversity are unknown. To test our hypothesis that Pale Swallowwort affects soil biodiversity, we collected leaf litter from three state parks throughout Central New York at sites with and without the invasive plant. Samples were run through Berlese funnels to collect macroinvertebrates which were cleaned and identified in the lab. Thus far, varying diversities of invasive jumping worms, diplopods, and chilopods have been recorded and continuing morphological and statistical analyses are being performed. Identifying the ways that invasive species alter soil biodiversity is a vital step in determining appropriate conservation management strategies.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/slides/1023/thumbnail.jp

Get PDFThe topic i chose to teach was “ How to: Degree Works.” The reason i chose this topic was to help first year students become more familiar with how to navigate degree works and also become familiar with schedule builder. First year students don\u27t often realize that instead of having an advisor make your schedule, like in high school, we as college students are fully responsible for making our own schedules. The transition from highschool to college comes with a lot of responsibilities that many students didn\u27t know about. “Gaining an understanding about the barriers facing the transition from high school to college is a crucial step” (Schneider,2014). Now that covid is coming to an end, that is another transition that students have to make and by having that guidance can really change a students perspective. “Throughout my college years, I have entered a pandemic, have had to navigate through the pandemic, and have transitioned from online schooling back to in-person classes” (The Importance of academic advising in higher education, 2022). Many first year students get in a state of panic when they realize that there are hundreds of students registering before them, and they end up not getting into the classes they wanted.
