Your Sign to Get Involved: Engaging on Campus
The topic I chose to teach was Getting Involved. My Presentation was based on this because of the impact getting involved on campus had on me. There are many different reasons why this topic shapes a students college experience. For example, getting involved overall makes you more well rounded, gives you more opportunities and experiences, and helps you find your place of belonging in a new environment. A research study conducted in the Center for the Study of Student Life at The Ohio State University has shown college student involvement is positively related to academic performance, cognitive development, well-being, leadership, and multicultural awareness (Center for the Study of Student Life, The Ohio State University, 2020). Students who are involved have more benefits because they are more inclined to be outgoing because they have a bigger group of people. Throughout the Ohio State study employers also rated highly-involved students as significantly more career ready than uninvolved or minimally involved students (2020).https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1149/thumbnail.jp
Campus Need-to-Knows
Things on campus I described to my students as well as the statistics to promote safe drinking. I did two activities, one about things to do on campus and the other on the pros and cons of partying. I offered statistics of how many college students drink, as well as some cons and things that were recorded about college drinking in 2022.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1162/thumbnail.jp
Looking Ahead: SUNY Cortland Journey
The topic I chose to teach was “Looking Ahead”. This presentation was about how to help students plan and utilize tools to succeed at SUNY Cortland. There are many benefits to having career plans. Cosey Moffitt, from Illinois Tech states, career prep “allow(s) you to explore academic and career possibilities that you may not have considered” (Moffitt, 2025). In my presentation, I allow students to prepare for their college careers. Set goals for each year and overarch themes they wish to accomplish. Having goals allows you to further plan and make detailed decisions on what will be most beneficial (Minor, 2014). The goal of my lesson is to help guide students and their time at SUNY Cortland. Through planning and keeping themselves accountable they are most likely to succeed in not only their time at SUNY Cortland but post-grad as well.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1112/thumbnail.jp
Scroll Control: Managing screen time
My poster will explore how excessive screen time affects not only college students’ mental health, but also their sleep quality and academic focus. Many students spend hours online, whether it be for educational or social reasons, and they often don\u27t realize how overusing technology increases stress and decreases productivity. According to research, high daily screen use can contribute to anxiety, sleep problems, and reduced attention span. By learning digital mindfulness strategies, such as setting screen-free times, using focus apps, and being intentional about social media, they can improve overall well-being. The goal of my poster is to encourage students to make small yet responsible choices that can help create a healthier relationship with technology and improve their mental wellness.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1137/thumbnail.jp
Wellness Wednesday- Managing Stress and Procrastination
The main topic I decided to base my lesson on was “Stress Management.” The specific areas I chose to explore were organization, exercise, relaxation, and making time for fun. The transition from high school to college can be very difficult, and for me personally, my biggest struggle was maintaining a good balance between my academic and social life. My main goal for this lesson was to present multiple methods of managing stress in hopes that each student will take away something helpful.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1150/thumbnail.jp
The Effectiveness of Different Stuttering Treatment Strategies
Stuttering is a speech disorder causing disruptions to the normal pattern of speech. No known cause or cure currently exists for stuttering. As a result, stuttering treatment methods are more subject to the client’s individual feelings and goals. This thesis will analyze three stuttering treatment methods. These are fluency shaping, stuttering modification and cognitive behavioral therapy. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze each of these methods in order to note specific advantages and disadvantages of each. Additionally, this writing is intended to increase the general knowledge of current treatment methods for stuttering used by speech language pathologists
Partnering with Parents: Encouraging Families to Take Part in their Child’s Educational Growth
Family involvement in their child’s education is a topic not discussed enough. While many teachers and parents or guardians know the academic benefits that family involvement and family-teacher partnerships bring for a child, they do not know where to start. Teachers play a crucial role in encouraging and providing resources for families to support their child’s learning. I have selected twelve various tips and tools that will equip Kindergarten through grade 5 teachers with the knowledge and resources to partner with parents and families to encourage the success of each child in their classroom. These tips and tools have been compiled into a website that allows local teachers to easily access and implement them in their classrooms
