The Next Step: SPM Professional Preparation

    No full text
The goals for this presentation for Sport Management first-year students will focus on fostering early awareness and implementation of essential skills and strategies needed to excel in the sport industry. Firstly, students should aim to establish a polished professional image through their appearance and maintain a consistent, strategic digital presence on platforms like LinkedIn and TeamworkOnline. This will enhance their visibility and credibility to potential employers. Additionally, students will learn to prioritize active engagement in campus activities to build hands-on experience and transferable skills. This involvement should complement efforts to develop robust resumes and cover letters tailored for competitive internship and job applications. Moreover, they should cultivate meaningful relationships through networking with professors, peers, and industry professionals. These proactive steps will prevent last-minute internship scrambles and ensure that by graduation, students have the necessary experience, connections, and confidence to succeed in their career pursuits.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1116/thumbnail.jp

Cortland Confidence 101: Finding Help When You Need It

    No full text
The topic I chose to cover was how to find and utilize resources on campus. My lesson focused on the importance of using different support services and resources available here on the SUNY Cortland campus. I find it important to help students become familiar with the different academic, wellness, and personal support resources offered to them. By physically locating these places, students gained confidence in knowing where to go when they need assistance. Students often struggle in their first year because they do not know what help is available on the campus. Research shows that many first-year students face challenges during the transition to college because they are unaware of the support that exists. According to Davis et al. (2023), increasing awareness of student mental health and services is key to reducing the stigma and improving utilization of care among college students. By understanding where to find these resources and how to access them, students can overcome some of the barriers that prevent them from seeking help when they need it.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1127/thumbnail.jp

No Pressure! : Finding Sober Social Environments at SUNY Cortland

Often times this new freedom feels like a call to do things we know we shouldn’t do or couldn’t do before. The reality is everyone (kids, teens, and adults) can struggle with willpower and social pressure and its much healthier to live your college years with intention, not carelessness. I know students who hadn’t touched drugs or alcohol before college and ended up with addictions because their friends,fraternities/sororities, roommates, or teammates pressured them or because they felt a strong urge to spite their parents (or their rules) by being reckless.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1133/thumbnail.jp

Importance of Mental Health in College Students

    No full text
I dove into the topic of mental health in college students to raise awareness and provide resources and skills to the incoming freshmen. These students are navigating their first time away from home, new academic challenges, and balancing school with socializing and possibly a job. College students have an overwhelming amount of responsibilities and need to take care of themselves. Giving them tips, skills, and resources to help them navigate this time is super important. Students should be warned that their mental and physical health can and will affect their academic lives too.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1148/thumbnail.jp
