Effectiveness of Physical Activity Intervention Programs on Reducing or Eliminating Behaviors Associated with ADHD in Children

    No full text
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent disorder typically diagnosed during childhood that affects multiple domains of a child’s life (e.g., academic, social). Core behaviors associated with ADHD include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity which lead to the following diagnoses: inattentive type ADHD , hyperactive-impulsive type ADHD , or combination type ADHD. Commonly, ADHD is treated with psychostimulant medication and/or cognitive behavioral therapy. While these forms of treatment can be effective, they can also have negative side effects. The use of physical activity intervention (i.e., aerobic exercise, yoga, sports) may be a promising form of intervention for children who have ADHD in addition to more common forms of treatment. The purpose of this synthesis was to review the literature on the effectiveness of physical activity intervention programs on reducing or eliminating behaviors associated with ADHD in children

Incorporating Socio-Scientific Issues into the 5E Model for Learning: Engaging Students in Science through Emotional Connection, Kinesthetic Movement and Real World Phenomenon.

    No full text
This article presents an argument for the use of socio-scientific issues in the science classroom as a was to make real world connections and engage students in content. This article can work like an active work book for teachers to use as a reference for lesson plans for each of the NYS science standards. Following are 24 activities, one for each of the 24 Next Generation Science Standards as well as supporting research and theories. Each activity introduces students to a socio-scientific issue and acts as an engaging activity to fit with in the 5E model for science learning. Any of these activities can be done at multiple points of the 5E model and can be incorporated into lessons surrounding the standard in many unique ways, but all are intended to be ENGAGING. All activities include a fully engaging, multimodal activity that must be followed up by a class discussion of the issue. These activities are intended to grasp the interest of the students and act as a gateway into the depth and content of the topic. These activities cover the Life Science standards, which include four broad topics broken into 24 standards. There is one SSI for each standard at the high school level totaling 24 activities. These activities are intended for use with 9th and 10th grade living environment students. All socio-scientific issues are applicable at the middle school level or at the 11th/ 12th/ AP levels, content and depth may need to be revised. If the activities presented are not suited for your classroom, you may use this as a reference book for socio-scientific issues related to the Next Generation Science Standards for Life Science. Given the changing nature of education merged with the growth of technology, each activity page is equipped with an online adaptation for remote learning

Science In The Garden: A Personal Journey of National Science Foundation Grant For The Construction and Use of a Greenhouse and Related Facilities

    No full text
While the vast majority of the work involved in this capstone project was actually writing and submitting a national science foundation grant, the project that follows is a description of this process. The genesis of the work began as an idea a coworker of mine had. As a district, Franklin is highly limited in the resources available. Our science classrooms are out of date with technology and there is a disparaging need for more hands-on activities. Throughout our discussions, we dreamed that we could build an outdoor science lab and greenhouse; Somewhere where we would be able to give our students the best opportunities to learn about scientific concepts. When continuing this discussion, it was discovered that the greenhouse could be outfitted with all of the modern-day technology used in agriculture, which is what our community is known for. Quickly, other faculty members and staff discovered that the science department was planning on writing a greenhouse grant, and ideas started to flow about additions that could be made. Together, Franklin CSD came up with a list of needs and wants for a greenhouse, and each of these were implemented in the design. The project includes sections and products required by the National Science Foundation (NSF) such as a bibliographical sketch and budget plans. Each of these sections has a set of directions, and need to be followed with extreme accuracy with penalty of disqualification if not followed. Each figure throughout this project is captioned with a brief description of what the figure is asking the grant writer to do

Using Culturally Responsive Pedagogy to Promote Engagement and Learning of Addition and Subtraction of Integers in Middle School Mathematics

    No full text
The culture in which a student lives impacts the way they learn. It is important for mathematics teachers to be knowledgeable about students and their cultures to properly engage them in learning. Every classroom has a diverse set of learners that can benefit from the proper implementation of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP). Instructional tools that can develop and support CRP are Inquiry Based Learning, Authentic Questions, Modeling, and Hands-on Activities. This curriculum project presents these instructional tools designed around a 7th grade Integers unit to engage learners and develop a deeper understanding of the concepts
