Molecular Solvation Dynamics in Phosphonium Ionic Liquids
The goal of this research is to determine the solvation dynamics in four environmentally-friendly, “green”, phosphonium ionic liquids (PILs) + cosolvent binary mixtures. Rose Bengal is a prototypical fluorescent molecule known for its spectral sensitivity and is used to probe the IL mixtures. Neat ILs and methanol (MeOH) solvents were used to form an array of IL mixtures in which rose Bengal was dissolved. Solvation of rose Bengal was determined using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The solute emission intensity is quenched most effectively at a mole fraction of ~0.1 PIL suggesting that the solvent-solute interactions are most unique in this range of mole fraction. Similarly, the lifetime data shows a minimum value at ~0.1 mol fraction PIL, also implying quenching of the probe at this solution composition. Rose Bengal is better solvated, more relaxed, at MeOH-rich mole fractions. Solvation of rose Bengal occurs at a faster rate in solutions of lower mole fraction PIL.https://digitalcommons.brockport.edu/research_posters/1044/thumbnail.jp
Development of a monolithically 3D printed reciprocating pump for HPLC
There has been much research in recent years aiming to make scientific instrumentation more accessible. An increase in accessibility has many benefits including reduced costs and expanded opportunities to learn about instrumentation. 3D printing of scientific instrumentation provides an option that is cheap and customizable. This study follows the development of a 3D-printed ball check valve to be implemented in a reciprocating pump such as one used for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The valve was designed using OpenSCAD and printed using a Prusa i3 MK2S 3D printer. Ball check valves with both a spherical and conical design were designed, and early qualitative tests point towards the conical design being desirable. Future work includes the design of a reciprocating piston, the implementation of the piston along with two check valves to create a complete reciprocating pump, and quantifying pressures achieved by the pump.https://digitalcommons.brockport.edu/research_posters/1041/thumbnail.jp
How feasible is it for LA to host the Olympics in 2028 given the city\u27s existing transportation, lodging, and other resources?
Hosting the Olympics is a monumental task that can negatively effect a host city. It is well established that hosting the Olympics is a costly venture. The aim of this paper is to determine how feasible it is for the city of Los Angeles to host the 2028 Olympic Games given the city\u27s existing transportation, lodging, and other resources.To test the hypothesis that Los Angeles is relatively well suited to host the 2028 Olympic Games, I examined three past Olympic Games in order to determine where they succeeded and where they fell short. The studied games include, London 2012, Sochi 2014, and Rio 2016 London 2012 was largely a success, while Sochi and Rio struggled. London was able to succeed by focusing on the legacy of the games, while Sochi and Rio were deterred by corruption from Game organizers and government officials. I also examined public data in Los Angeles including existing venues, budgets, infrastructure, and lodging. The results showed that showed that little construction would have to be done for sports venues.These results suggest that Los Angeles is more well suited to host the games compared to most countries due to its existing infrastructure.https://digitalcommons.brockport.edu/research_posters/1047/thumbnail.jp
Culture Shock and its Effect on English Language Learners
When English language learners (ELLs) move from one country to another, their social, emotional, and psychological well-being is affected in school. Culture shock impedes ELLs’ academic abilities. This problem emerges from the growing number of ELLs in our country today. This number will continue to grow which should motivate teachers to become more informed on the problems that our ELLs face. The literature suggests that there are four phases of culture shock; teachers must advocate for ELLs; and it is imperative for ELLs to keep their identity in school while learning about the new culture. The PD aims to educate participants about how culture shock effects ELLs. This way, appropriate action can be taken. During the PD, participants will collaborate, share stories, and learn about this overlooked reality that students face. Research should continue to be conducted to learn more about how culture shock effects students of all ages throughout their schooling careers
Increasing Opportunities for Academic Success of English Language Learners By Strengthening Home and School Relations
Abstract
The purpose of this capstone is to examine challenges for English language learners and face those challenges in attempt to mitigate through parent-school partnerships. Through a social-cultural lens, this capstone seeks to answer the question, how can schools increase the academic success of English Language Learners (ELLs) by strengthening home-school relations? The research suggests that when immediate needs are met and when academic support is provided at home and at school, students are more likely to experience academic success. Therefore the goal of the PD is to establish a committee that meets regularly with parents and students to strengthen relationships between families of ELLs and the school. The aim is to inform parents of academic opportunities including advanced coursework, and assist with basic needs of families to allow academic focus to occur. The expected outcome of the PD is that over time, the committee will see an increase in academic achievement among actively participating ELLs and families. The implication for ELLs is that with increased support comes increased academic achievement
The Human Condition: Stories on Love and Loss
As both a reader and a writer, I’ve always been interested in the idea that all stories in literature have been told in one way or another before. Yet, authors find a way to engage their audiences and make these stories new by incorporating new and personal factors within the human connections within stories. For my thesis, I chose to explore this idea and focus on one-on-one human connections as the connecting thread within my short story collection
Variations in Stream Sediment Microbial Communities Across a Natural Climate Gradient in Eastern Puerto Rico
Six months following the passage of Hurricane Maria across Puerto Rico, water and sediment samples were taken at eight locations along a precipitation gradient to assess the impact of sediment upwelling, organic matter input, and other heavy precipitation-associated influences on water chemistry and microbial populations. Eight sites were broken up into wet (291-440 cm precipitation/yr), dry (140-290 cm precipitation/yr) and reference streams (controls). The hypotheses were as follows: wet environments will be different from dry environments in terms of the number of colony forming units. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that wetter environments should support a greater number of CFUs and that microbial species will show preference for either wet or dry environments. Lastly, it is hypothesized that ion concentrations will be greater in wetter environments and will affect microbial growth. There was no significant relationship between the number of colony-forming units and sampling location (wet vs. dry, wet vs. reference, dry vs. reference), as determined by a Kruskal-Wallis test. No species showed a specific preference for one environment over the other. No pathogenic organisms were recovered through biochemical analyses, though opportunistic pathogens were present. 9 of the 14 organisms identified are a normal part of warm-blooded flora. Contrary to my hypothesis, and in support of Lindsey (2018), I found higher concentrations of dissolved ions at sites receiving less annual rainfall (Figures 5, 6, 7 and 8). Heavier precipitation results in dilution, while evaporation results in accumulation of ions (Lindsey 2018). This could affect microbial metabolism, as well as alter community structure as climate continues to change (Prayitno et al. 2018). This study provides a snapshot of microbial composition after precipitation events, which may broaden understanding of the affect heavy rain events have on microbes and, subsequently, human and ecosystem health

Dr. Bill Andrews attended Cornell University from 1955-1958, where he earned his PhD in Political Science. He served as a Professor of Political Science at the College at Brockport from 1967 to 1996, also serving as the Dean in during the 1970\u27s. He is also a scholar of the history of Brockport, and has written several published books on the town\u27s history and development

Kristine Klein was raised in Greece. She attended Brockport, where she earned a Bachelor\u27s in Music History. She then earned a Master\u27s degree in Library Science at SUNY Geneseo. She then earned a law degree in Georgia. She became politically involved while living in Washington D.C. She has lived in Tennessee, Florida, Maryland, Texas, Washington D.C., and California, and she moved back to New York state in order to spend time with her then dying sister. As of November 2020, she had recently taken archaeology and anthropology courses through the adult education program at SUNY Brockport
