Malignant Gastric PEComa: A Rare Malignancy

    Get PDF
Introduction: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is characterized by its perivascular location and spindle appearance of tumor cells with clear to lightly granular eosinophilic cytoplasm and a round-to-oval centrally located nucleus. Immunohistochemically, nearly all PEComas show reactivity for melanocytic (HMB-45 and/or melan-A) and smooth muscle (actin and/or desmin) markers. Malignant gastric PEComa is extremely rare and only 3 cases have been reported to best of our knowledge. We report a 4th case of malignant gastric PEComa.Case presentation: We are presenting a case of a 48 year-old Caucasian female who presented to the emergency department with complaint of abdominal pain for 3-4 weeks associated with intermittent nausea and vomiting. CT Abdomen/Pelvis with contrast showed a mass at the greater curvature of the distal stomach. Patient underwent resection of the mass and pathology result was consistent with malignant PEComa. Conclusion: PEComas are a family of rare mesenchymal tumors, composed of histologically and immunohistochemically distinctive perivascular epithelioid cells. These tumors co-express, the muscle and melanotic markers. Surgical resection is the best treatment option. Most commonly, they arise in the retroperitoneum and colon is most the common site followed by small intestine in the GI tract

Cytogenetics and FISH Studies in Multiple Myeloma – A Retrospective Study from Western India

    Get PDF
Multiple myeloma is characterized by a complex pattern of extensive genomic aberrations involving many chromosomes and it constitutes about 1% of all malignancies. We have performed conventional cytogenetic (CC) and interphase FISH on 58 cases of MM. Results showed that from 58 cases, only 08 cases had abnormal karyotype by conventional cytogenetic. On the other hand, interphase FISH study with 58 MM patients revealed 08 patients with normal results while 50 patients showed complex genetic aberrations. It included deletions of 13q14 (48.3%), 17p13 (13.8%), 11q13 (27.6%) along with translocation of IgH involving t(4;14)(51.7%) and t(14;16)(1,7%). We conclude that interphase FISH study should be performed in conjunction with conventional cytogenetic for prognostic significance in MM

    Get PDF
The virion protein 24 of ebola Virus is multifunctional protein. The virion protein of ebola Virus plays imperative roles in the virus life cycle. The objective of the present study was to identify the residue conservation in the virion protein 24 of various ebola viruses. The study was based on 173 sequences from Bundibugyo, Sudan, Tai Forest, Zaire and Reston ebola viruses. The virion protein 24 showed higher level of sequence conservation. On the whole, this study exposed residues which are universally conserved among different viral species. These universally conserved residues might be involved in either structure stabilizing or protein-protein interactions. The conserved residues identified in the present study in conjunction with structural analysis of virion protein 24 identified novel binding sites: Ile157, Ile161, Leu164; Leu164, Leu167; Leu150, Ile161; Ala99, Ile161; Asp205, Ser207; Phe76, His78 and Glu46, Asp48. The present study could form basis for designing universal anti-ebola drugs which are resistant to mutations arising in the future

    Get PDF
Yoga is an ancient science of India. The main aim of this study was to see effects of yoga intervention on blood sugar levels (BSL) in persons diagnosed as having type II diabetes. The objective of the study was to check fasting and post-prandial BSL before and after yoga therapy in the study groups. Thirty Patients with type II diabetes were selected for the present study. Patients were then divided in to the experimental group of 15 people and control group of 15 people. Yoga therapy was administered for 6 days a week, for 4 weeks. Pre post session BSL tests were carried out for both groups. The result showed no significant difference between pre Session post session of fasting BSL (p =0.41) in experimental group. But there was significant difference in pre session post session of post prandial BSL in experimental group (p= 0.00). Fasting BSL between experimental control group is also no significant (p= 0.08) whereas post prandial BSL difference between experimental control group is significant (p= 0.00).

Effect of Sisal Fibre Loading on Wear and Friction Properties of Jute Fibre Reinforced Epoxy Composite

    Get PDF
This paper presents an experimental study on wear and frictional properties of developed hybrid sisal/jute fibre reinforced epoxy composite. Composite are fabricated by hand lay-up technique keeping constant 30 wt. % of fibre content. Wear and frictional properties of hybrid composite is carried out at different operating parameters such as applied load (10-30 N), sliding speed (1-3m/s) and constant sliding distance 1000 m. Alkali treatment of fibres is used to increase the percentage reduction of wear rate and friction coefficient.  The experimental results show that increase in specific wear rate and coefficient of friction is found on increasing the applied load and sliding speed.

Organic Silicone Based Poly-Acrylate Binder Synthesis for Textile Pigment Printing

    Get PDF
This present study deals about an organic silicone based poly-acrylate binder by using Emulsion Polymerization technique because it produces high molecular weight polymers, and there is no or negligible content of volatile organic compounds (VOC) for textile pigment printing. The binder was prepared by polymerizing hard monomers, soft monomers, functional monomers, and compound emulsifying agent, organic silicone, an initiator, pH adjustor and deionized water. Then the properties like sublimation test, durability test, fastness test, yellowness and softness testing were performed. The role of acrylic acid and Methyl methacrylate on the characterization of the polymers was detected and recorded. A material has been selected based on pervious study of different research and effect of silicone amount on film was observed

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Complications of Mandibular Third Molar Surgery

    Get PDF
Background: Surgical extraction of third molar is one of the most common surgeries performed by maxillofacial surgeons. This study was aimed to assess the incidence of complications after surgical removal of mandibular third molar and their risk factors.Materials and methods: This study was performed prospectively. Patients referred to the School of Dentistry for the surgical removal of mandibular third molar were included. Surgical time, number and form of roots, as well as demographic data was recorded. 24 hours later occurrence of complications including bleeding, swelling, pain, trismus, paresthesia and fracture were assessed. The frequency of reported complications, as well as the influence of risk factors was analyzed. Results: A total of 101 patients with a mean age of 22.95±1.93 years were included. All patients showed mouth opening limitation, pain and swelling. Two cases had paresthesia (1.98%) and 31 cases (30.7%) complained of excessive bleeding. The average postoperative pain based on visual analogue scale was 4.01±0.76. Pain was lower in men. Trismus and bleeding was less in teeth with conical root compared to teeth with separate roots. In addition, it was shown that the teeth with more roots had higher occurrence of pain, swelling, trismus and bleeding. All of the complications increased with increasing surgical time. Conclusion: Considering the high prevalence of complications following wisdom tooth surgery, in order to control them, it is necessary to be aware of the risk factors and inform patients

    Get PDF
The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of extracts of Cymbopogon citratus on the blood sugar level, lipid profiles and hormonal profiles of normal rats. Oral administration of ethanolic and aqueous extract of C. citratus at a doses of 200 mg/kg body weight, for a period of 30 days, caused a significant (p0.05) reduction in blood glucose levels. Effect on hormonal profile (TSH, T3, and T4) was also determined, and was found to be significantly higher in all the administered groups when compared with control. Lipid profiles levels; Total cholesterols, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol were significantly (p0.05) higher for all treated rats as compared against control. Findings in this study showed that this plant has hypoglycemic properties and did not exert oxidative damage to the heart and the various hormonal profiles as well as its relative safety and possible use for weight gain.

T Cell Lymphoma: A Rough Road to Diagnosis

    Get PDF
Introduction: Lymphoproliferative disorders are well known for their variable presentation. Peripheral T cell lymphoma not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) is one subtype which is especially notorious. It has a variable age of onset, predominantly a nodal presentation and immunohistochemistry (IHC) depicting mature T cells.Presentation of case: We share our experience of a 33 year old patient who presented with mediastinal mass with pericardial effusion. However the histopathology revealed PTCL-NOSConclusion: This case in one of the manifestations of heterogeneity encompassing T cell neoplasms where discordance in clinical and pathological behaviour caused not only diagnostic confusion but also complicated treatment decisions.

Bilateral Extraocular Muscle Metastases from Breast Cancer in a Patient with Thyroid Eye Disease

    Get PDF
Introduction: Breast cancer is a very rare cause of bilateral extraocular muscle metastasis. Extraocular metastasis can be missed in patients with concurrent orbital pathology.Presentation of Case: We present a further case of a 71-year-old lady with concurrent thyroid eye disease. She initially presented with bilateral restriction of extraocular movements before developing unilateral ptosis and visual reduction. An extraocular muscle biopsy confirmed metastatic lobular breast carcinoma. Conclusion: This case adds to the literature base on extra-ocular muscle metastasis and highlights the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion particularly in the presence of co-existing orbital pathology.  We also review the other cases in the literature and the differences in clinico-radiological presentation of thyroid eye disease and extraocular muscle metastases
