    An Unusual Presentation of Craniofacial Fibrous Dysplasia: A Case Report, Review and Update on Management

    Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a non-malignant condition caused by post-zygotic, activating mutations of the GNAS gene that results in inhibition of the differentiation and proliferation of bone-forming stromal cells and leads to the replacement of normal bone and marrow by fibrous tissue and woven bone. The phenotype is variable and may be isolated to a single skeletal site or multiple sites and sometimes is associated with extra skeletal manifestations in the skin and/or endocrine organs (McCune-Albright syndrome). The clinical behavior and progression of FD may also vary, thereby making the management of this condition difficult with few established clinical guidelines. This case report provides a clinically-focused comprehensive description of craniofacial FD, its natural progression, the components of the diagnostic evaluation and the multi-disciplinary management

    Finding Ranking of Testers in Line X Tester Experiments

    Improvement of crop traits, mainly the characteristics of yield and the extension of genetic variability is the goal of many of breeding projects. It can be realized e.g. by using appropriate forms of parental crosses schemes. If we have a large number of inbred lines (genotypes) experiments is carried out with hybrids obtained by crossing a line × tester (testers). Analyzed the expression of characteristics (usually yield) in F1 hybrids, we can assess the value of the breeding lines. An important question is the selection of testers (tester), which should diversify in the maximum degree analyzed trait (yield) in hybrids. In this paper we presents a model for obtaining ranking testers. This may be important diagnostic tool in breeding selection to obtained new hybrids with significant transgressive effects. An example of the results of field experiments were of spring rape. In this experiment, general combining ability (GCA) effects was evaluated in the F1 generation. The results indicate different (depending on the used testers and analyzed traits) evaluate the GCA effects of inbred line. This approach is new to the practice of breeding and may be useful to the effective selection of the best testers

    Large-scale Analysis of Influenza A Virus Sequences Reveals Universally Conserved Residues of Matrix Proteins

    The matrix proteins of Influenza A Virus are multifunctional proteins. The matrix proteins of Influenza A Virus play imperative roles in the virus life cycle. The objective of the present study was to identify the residue conservation in the matrix proteins of Influenza A Virus. The study was based on 2836 amino acid sequences for the M1 protein and 3331 sequences for the M2 protein. Both the matrix proteins showed similar level of sequence conservation. On the whole, this study exposed residues which are universally conserved among different viral subtypes. These universally conserved residues might be involved in either structure stabilizing or protein-protein interactions. The conserved residues identified in the present study in conjunction with structural analysis of matrix proteins could form basis for designing universal anti-influenza drugs which are resistant to mutations arising in the future

    Introduction: Pancreatic cancer is the 4th most common cause of cancer death in the United States, and is associated with a 5 year survival rate of 5%. In recent years, epidemiological studies have raised the concern about a link between the use of antidiabetic drugs that act along the glucagon-like peptide pathway and the development of pancreatic cancer.  Additionally, pre-clinical studies have suggested that GLP-1 pathway agents may promote the malignant progression of pancreatic intraepithelial (PanIN). Exenatide, which is a glucagon-like peptide -1 agonist (GLP-1), is among the most commonly used agents in this class. Case presentation: The patient described in this case report presented with stage IV pancreatic cancer 5 years after the initiation of exanetide.  The patient and her husband raised the question of an association between exanetide and her cancer. Unfortunately, her cancer was refractory to gemcitabine based therapy, and she succumbed to her disease shortly after diagnosis.Conclusion:There is limited evidence to establish a link between this class of antidiabetic medication and pancreatic cancer. While there are preclinical studies that demonstrate a mechanism by which GLP-1 pathway drugs cause chronic pancreatitis and promotion of pancreatic oncogenesis, epidemiological studies are conflicting.  However, most of these studies had a fairly brief follow up period ( 5 years), and the process of oncogenesisis likely to be protracted over several years. This case, occurring 5 years after the initiation of the agent, highlights the need for longer epidemiological studies. As of 2007, over 700,000 patients had already used exanetide. Given the high usage of these medications and the poor prognosis associated with pancreatic cancer, any association is important. Long term clinical studies, and preclinical studies that explore the question of associated deleterious somatic mutations in this population are indicated

    Metastatic Serous Carcinoma Initially Presented As An Incarcerated And Strangulated Umbilical Hernia: A Rare Case Report

    Introduction: We report a rare case of a metastatic serous ovarian carcinoma presented as an incarcerated and strangulated umbilical hernia.Presentation of case: A 54 year-old female was admitted to the hospital with a painful mass around the umblical region. It was elucidated during clinical history that the mass had been present for 3 to 4 years without pain. An incarcerated and strangulated umbilical hernia including a solid mass and mesenteric fat was detected on physical examination. She underwent an urgent operation for strangulated umbilical hernia. The pathological diagnosis of the hernia material was reported as carcinoma compatible with serous ovarian carcinoma metastasis. Concurrently, total abdominal histerectomy and bilateral salphingo-oopherectomy, pelvic and paraaortic lymph node dissection, omentectomy and sigmoid colon resection were performed. Histopathological evaluation confirmed the serous carcinoma originated from the left ovary.Conclusion: In the literature, some metastatic tumors have been reported to be presented as umbilical metastasis rarely. However, the present case is the first metastatic ovarian cancer that initially presented as an incarcerated and strangulated umbilical hernia in the literature, to the best of our knowledge. 

    Lung Metastases Presenting as Multiple Bleeding Ulcers in the Small Bowel: A Case Report

    Introduction: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide and approximately half of the patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage.  Gastrointestinal metastases from lung cancer are very rare.Case Report: Here, we present a case of a 73-year-old gentleman with gastrointestinal metastases from lung cancer, presenting as acute gastrointestinal bleeding from multiple bleeding ulcers in the small bowel.Conclusion: Early detection of gastrointestinal metastases will help with determining clinical management. Whilst likely palliative in nature, treatment may incorporate surgical resection which if to be undertaken, should be performed early for prompt palliation of symptoms and improvement of quality of remaining life

    A Rare Case of Rectal Metastasis from Sarcomatoid Variant of Urothelial Carcinoma: A Case Report

    Introduction: Urothelial carcinoma of the bladder with sarcomatoid differentiation is known to display aggressive biological behaviour. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of isolated rectal metastasis from sarcomatoid urothelial carcinoma of the bladder following curative surgery.Presentation of Case: A 72-year-old male presented with tenesmus 6 months after radical cystoprostatectomy, lymph node dissection and ileal conduit formation for pathological T1N0M0 bladder carcinoma.Digital rectal examination revealed thickening of the distal rectum with no bleeding. Computerised tomography demonstrated thickening in the rectal mucosa and submucosa with intact perirectal fat. Rectal biopsy performed via colonoscopy confirmed metastases of urothelial carcinoma origin. The patient was treated with palliative radiation.Conclusion: This case report illustrates an unusual location of urothelial carcinoma metastasis. A high clinical suspicion in patients with this aggressive variant of cancer is required

    Triple Primary Carcinomas: Prostatic Adenocarcinoma, Bladder Urethral Carcinoma and Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: A Case Report

    Introduction: Patients with multiple tumors represent a segment of the cancer survivor population affected more than once by cancer, the phenomenon is still rare.Case presentation: In this report we present a patient who developed primary bladder urethral carcinoma with synchronous prostatic adenocarcinoma and metachronous papillary thyroid carcinoma where diagnosed within nine month period. There was no clear risk factors could explain this combination except smoking history.Conclusion: The diagnosis of cancer should not exclude the existence of other concomitant malignancies. This combination of multiple primary carcinomas, to our knowledge, has never been reported in the literature

    Synthesis and Characterization of New Polymers from Adenopus breviflorus benth oil, Styrene and Divinyl benzene by Cationic Polymerization

    A variety of new polymers ranging from soft to hard plastics were prepared by cationic polymerization of Adenopus breviflorus oil with styrene and divinyl benzene initiated by modified boron trifluoride etherate. The fully cured thermosets were found to contain between 78- 92% cross linked materials possessing crosslink densities of between 2.39 x 103 to 2.09 x 104 mol/m3 and glass transition temperatures of 12 – 800C. The tensile moduli of the materials ranged from 1.47 to 404MPa, the ultimate tensile stress varied from 0.18 to 7.78MPa and the elongation at break varied between 2 and 34%. Depending on composition, some of the materials possessed good damping and shape memory properties. Overall the newly prepared materials from Adenopus breviflorus oil hold a lot of promise as new polymeric materials

    Effect of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Parameters on Certain Properties of Natural Polymeric Material (Cotton) Fiber

    Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma reactor, operated at atmospheric pressure was used for modifying the properties of bleached plain woven cotton fabrics. Cotton fabric was treated at 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 kV electrode current for 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 min in the presence of air plasma, in order to establish the chemical effect on cotton fiber. Some properties such as wick-ability, absorbency, tensile strength, tear strength, dye-ability; FT-IR analysis and surface morphology analysis were carried-out as well. The outcomes revealed that, plasma treatment resulted in surface etching, generation of carboxylic and carbonyl group contents in cotton fiber. The increased carbonyl and carboxylic group content resulted in enhancement of fiber wettability and rate of fabric vertical wicking. The reactive dyes uptake of treated samples were increased almost linearly but decreased with increased treatment time and intensity of voltage across the electrodes. A slight increase in tensile and tear strength was found in air plasma treated fabrics. Yellowness of the fabric was increased after plasma treatment. The SEM micrographs confirmed the atmospheric plasma could modify the fiber surface outwardly
