    Get PDF
In present work, hemp fibres were subjected to alkali treatments at various concentrations (5, 10 15 wt.%) to prepare its polyester based composites.  Hemp fibre reinforced polyester composites were prepared by hand lay-up technique followed by static compression keeping constant 25 wt.% of fibres content in order to study influence of alkali treatment concentrations on its mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties. Mechanical properties of prepared composites were  studied in terms of tensile strength and modulus, and flexural strength and modulus whereas dynamic mechanical properties were studied in terms of storage modulus (), damping (), glass transition temperature (Tg) and effectiveness constant of reinforcement ().  The results indicated that mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties were found to increase  due to alkali treatment up to 5%  concentration and then decrease.

    Advances in liquid biopsy

Cancer is a lethal disease and ranks as the world’s second most prevalent cause of death. So far, tissue-based biopsy is conducted routinely to detect and monitor the progression of cancer. However, the traditional technique is deemed too invasive and cannot be used repeatedly. On the other hand, liquid biopsy, also known as blood-sample test, has recently surged and has been proved to be more and more promising. Using cell-free DNA (cfDNA) and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), liquid biopsy can effectively profile the genetic landscape of cancer and can detect the presence of cancer in patients at very early stages due to its high sensitivity. Liquid biopsy is not only capable of monitoring the risk or potential of tumorigenesis, but also capable of predicting and tracking metastasis and relapse. Therefore, liquid biopsy is believed to revolutionize cancer detection, prognosis, and personalized medicine treatment. In this review, the concept, history, recent advances of liquid biopsy, and existing commercial companies’ most commonly used techniques were summarized; the advantages and disadvantages and the broad applications of liquid biopsy in various fields including cancer were discussed

Adverse Effects of Injectable Facial Fillers: A Maxillofacial Approach to Management

    Get PDF
Adverse effects of dermal facial fillers are increasingly posing a difficult treatment dilemma. Although broadly non-toxic synthetic fillers act as foreign bodies in the tissues eliciting a host response, even many years after administration. Adverse outcomes, ranging from chronic lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory reactions to granulomatous reactions have been documented in the literature1. High aesthetic demands, lack of existing scars for access and unavailable treatment history can compound the difficulty. Furthermore, we are increasingly encountering adverse effects in patients treated outside the United Kingdom (UK). Here we present a case report demonstrating our experience in the management of these problems

PRE AND POST PLASMID CURING EFFECT ON PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA SUSCEPTIBILITY TO ANTIBIOTICS

This study investigates the effect of plasmid curing on antibiotics susceptibility pattern of Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates. The study involved confirmed clinical samples of P. aeruginosa obtained from patients attending the general out-patient department of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua-Nigeria. Samples with established Pseudomonas aeruginosa were subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing before plasmid curing (group 1) and after plasmid curing (group 2) using Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate intercalating dye following previously determined standard procedures. Antibiotic resistivity and susceptibility outcomes were then determined by measuring the zone of inhibition and the pre and post cured experiments were compared. The results showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa is 100% resistance to tetracycline, cefotaxime, ethromycin, methronidazole, nitrofuratoin, ampicillin-clauvulanate, ampicillin, amoxicillin and ampiclox. Post-plasmid curing resulted to increased susceptibility rangeing from 13.3% to 92.0% as against 5.3% to 80% in the pre-plasmid cured P. aeruginosa. Based on these findings, clinical isolates P. aeruginosa in the study area has a very high resistance rate that may be due to plasmid development or mutation of the organism and thus, the call for clinicians to carryout antibiotics susceptibility testing prior to antibiotic prescription

Urinary Tract Infection: Bacterial etiologies, drug resistance profile and associated risk factors among diabetic patients attending Nekemte Referral Hospital

    No full text
In diabetic patients, there is increased risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Hence, current information on antimicrobial resistance and the prevalence of the pathogenic bacteria need to be available at national and local levels to guide the rational use of the existing antimicrobials. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of UTIs, risk factors and antimicrobial resistance pattern of the bacterial isolates from diabetic patients in Nekemte Referral Hospital (NRH). An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 diabetic patients, who were attending the study setting for a clinical check-up during the study period. The overall prevalence of UTIs was 16.5% among the study population with the prevalence being higher among aged patients and females. Multivariate analysis revealed that level of education, history of UTIs and glucosuria was significantly associated with UTIs. Thirty-three bacterial uropathogens, total, were isolated with S. aureus (24.2%) and CN Staphylococcus spp (24.2%), E. coli (12.1%) and K. pneumonia (12.1%) being the most common isolates. The microbes showed highest level of resistance to penicillin G (97.0%), and ampicillin (93.9%); and lowest level of resistance to ceftriaxone (50.0%) and vancomycin (52.9%). In conclusion, majority of isolated bacteria were resistant to antibiotics used in the study setting. This calls for attention of health professionals to consider the resistance pattern in their clinical practice. Most importantly, this finding may be used to control trends of antibiotic-resistance, to develop local antibiotic policies and to assist clinicians in the rational choice of antibiotics therapy; thus, to prevent indiscriminate use of antibiotics

Melanoma of Unknown Primary Presenting as a Single Back Mass

    Get PDF
In this report, we present a case involving the discovery of metastatic melanoma within a mid-right back mass with the clinical presentation of an epidermoid cyst, but the histological qualities of a lymph node. A 43-year-old male presented with a 5 cm x 5 cm cyst-like mass on his mid-right back that had become painful over the last year and consequently underwent three surgical procedures. First, initial excision of the back mass and histological examination resulted in a diagnosis of metastatic melanoma without epidermal involvement. This was followed by re-excision of the back mass site and sentinel node excision, and finally, lymph node dissection of the right axilla. Of the lymph nodes examined, the sentinel node in the right axilla alone showed evidence of melanoma. The absence of a primary lesion or any histological evidence of regression in a presumed primary site resulted in a diagnosis of melanoma of unknown primary, or occult primary melanoma. To our knowledge, this is the first documented case of an occult primary melanoma presenting as a single mass representing a lymph node in the back

Effect of Nitrogen Rates and Foliar Spray of Micronutrients on Growth and Yield of Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)

    Get PDF
To find out optimum nitrogen (N) and micronutrients (MNs) doses for the growth and yield of sesame the experiment was undertaken at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research field, Dhaka, during April to July 2013 with three replications in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Three different N levels viz. N0= without N, N1= 60 kg h-1, N2=120 kg h-1 and four micronutrients (MNs) levels viz. M0= without MNs, M1= 50 ppm MNs, M2= 100 ppm and M3= 150 ppm MNs. The N significantly increased morphological characters - plant height, number of  leaves plant-1, branch number plant-1, fresh and dry weight of shoot and root; yield contributing characters-  number of pod plant-1, pod diameter, pod length, seed weight plant-1, seed weight plot-1 compared to control (N0). The rate of application of N 60 kg ha-1 produced the highest seed yield (1.21 t ha-1) which is consisting with most of the vegetative growth of sesame. Foliar application of different concentration of micronutrients also improved the morphological characters and seed yield of sesame as N. Interestingly 1000-seed weight did not show any significant differences with both  N and micronutrients. The maximum number of pod plant-1, pod diameter, pod length, seed weight plant-1, seed yield (1.14 tha-1) significantly increased with 150 ppm micronutrients. Therefore, this experimental results suggest that the use of 60 kg Nha-1 and 150 ppm micronutrients have produced highest seed yield of sesame by adjusting in plant morphological characters and yield contributing characters of sesame
