A REVIEW OF ISLAMIC CRIMINAL LAW ON THUGHTHROUGH ON THE NORTH SUMATRA-RIAU BORDER

Thuggery is a social phenomenon that often causes unrest and threatens public security, particularly in the North Sumatra-Riau border region. Thuggery in this region is often associated with violence, extortion, robbery, and threats carried out by groups or individuals. This study aims to examine thuggery from the perspective of Islamic criminal law, highlighting the causal factors, forms of action, and sanctions that can be imposed on perpetrators. The research uses a normative juridical method with a statutory and sociological approach. The results indicate that the main factors driving thuggery are difficult economic conditions, low levels of education, and weak law enforcement. In Islamic criminal law, acts of thuggery that contain elements of violence and threats to public security can be categorized as jarimah hirabah, namely crimes that damage public security and are considered major sins. Sanctions for perpetrators of hirabah are very severe, such as the death penalty, crucifixion, amputation, or exile, according to the severity of the crime committed, as stated in the Qur'an Surah Al-Maidah verse 33. This finding confirms that Islamic criminal law views thuggery as a serious crime that must be dealt with firmly to create security and public order. Effective law enforcement as well as a preventive and educational approach are essential to reduce the number of thuggery in the North Sumatra-Riau border region

Sistem Kewarisan Adat Simalungun (Studi Kasus Desa Rambung Merah, Kabupaten Simalungun)

    No full text

Using an LSTM Neural Network to Improve Symmetric and Asymmetric GARCH Volatility Forecast

Volatility forecasting is crucial for financial risk management, yet traditional models like GARCH struggle with nonlinearities and asymmetric effects. This study leverages Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks to enhance symmetric and asymmetric GARCH models, addressing these limitations. By integrating LSTM with GARCH, GARCH-X, and Realized GARCH frameworks, we propose hybrid models (Baseline and Extended versions) to improve forecasting accuracy. Using daily data from FTSE 100, Nikkei 225, and S&P 500 indices (2000–2020), we compared hybrid models against traditional models. Results show that the Extended LSTM hybrid model outperforms both traditional GARCH-type models and the Baseline LSTM, capturing complex volatility patterns more effectively. The Extended model’s architecture, featuring ReLU, GRU, and dropout layers, mitigates over-smoothing and enhances responsiveness to market fluctuations. This research demonstrates LSTM’s potential to refine volatility forecasting, offering valuable insights for investors and risk managers

Transliteration of traditional scripts such as Harah Jawoe, a regional variant of Jawi used in Acehnese manuscripts, is essential for preserving and understanding historical texts. While previous studies have focused on isolated character recognition, this research introduces a word-level transliteration approach using the YOLOv8 convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture. A dataset of 9,000 augmented images derived from the Hikayat Aceh manuscript was used to train and evaluate four YOLOv8 variants (small, medium, normal, and big). The results show that the big model achieved the most stable and reliable performance, with a peak mAP50–95 of 72.4% and an accuracy of 99.95%. These findings highlight the model’s capability to handle the structural complexity of Harah Jawoe script at the word level. This study offers a novel contribution by integrating object detection techniques with low-resource script transliteration, with implications for AI-driven cultural preservation and the digital accessibility of Southeast Asian manuscript heritag
