    Get PDF
The Jewish aljama of Zaragoza, like some other Jewish aljamas in Aragon, enjoyed certain judiciary privileges, controlled by the Crown, whereby the Jews had the faculty of solving their own quarrels: there was a court for civil causes (the bêṯ-dîn), a special one to judge the informers or "malsines", and a Jewish judge of appeals appointed by the community. This article examines the development of this autonomy during the 13th and 14th centuries, and studies Pedro el Ceremonioso's judiciary regulations of 1376. This law remained in force, in its broad lines, until their expulsion.

Two documents, executed by the king Martin I of Aragon in 1400 and 1408 in favour of the Jewish aljama of Lerida, are analysed in this article. Both documents contain local regulations that exclusively concern the Jewish community. The chapters executed by the monarch, by request of the representatives of the aljama, are designed to rebuild the aljama that was destroyed, both physically and as an institution, after the assault of 1391. The most relevant aspects of these privileged rules refer to the reconstruction and the repeopling process of the urban space, the impulse to the economy, the reformation of the Administration, and the attainment of temporary fiscal exemptions.

The study of the intellectual life of Avignonese and Comtadine Jews remains a desideratum for the scientific research which this paper contributes to with two unpublished liturgical songs. One of them is a canticle (the Ben Zvi Institute in Jerusalem, MS 1774), written in 1774 in honour of the Pope Clement XIV, Lorenzo Ganganelli, -who was remarkably favourable to the Jews, that reveals the life and work of a cantor in the synagogue of Carpentras, Joseph de Meyrargues, author of that poem and other poetical compositions. Another of these compositions is also published here for the first time according to the MS 2610 kept in the Carpentras Inguimbertine Library.
