Ex 17,8-16 und Dt 25,17-19 beim Wort genommen

In this article the texts of Ex 17,8-16 and Dt 25,17-19 are compared. Both texts deal with the attack by Amalek upon Israel. Although the description is different in each text, the consequences are quite the same: to show the purpose to destroy the foreign nation and, according to the will of Yahveh, to erase the memory of Amalek. There is, however, a crucial difference in the presentation of the two episodes: while the Exodus text refrains from any moral judgement of the Amalek attack, the Deuteronomist author makes an explicit judgement. It seems that the spontaneous and somehow natural reaction presented in Ex 17 was not enough for him. Could this moral justification be regarded as a historical progress?

    Get PDF
In his commentary on Ecclesiastes, Ibn Ezra uses astronomical and astrological concepts for establishing the meaning of some verses. These concepts reflect the influence of Ptolemy's systems, which were in use in the Middle Ages, and they are connected with theories of Arabic medieval scientists. By using these concepts, Ibn Ezra tries to justify the idea of Ecclesiastes that it is useless to be occupied in the matters of this world, because they are under the influence of stars. According to him, the perfection of the spirit through the development of wisdom is the only worthwile occupation in this life.

Ebrei e marrani in Italia in una commedia rinascimentale

Because of their extreme realism, Italian Renaissance comedies can be used as historical tools, in order to gauge social, commercial, and religious customs in Sixteenth Century Italy. The Comedia SINE NOMINE, written by an unknown author, printed in Florence by the Giuntis in 1574, relates the flight of a marrano family from Barcelona to Florence. In spite of being often caught in the web of the Italian «commedia erudita», the play is of great interest because it helps us to better understand the conditions under which Jews and marranos lived in Renaissance Florence.

The general view about Talmudic thinking had been emphatically formulated by Julius Guttmann: the Talmudic sages were not influenced by Greek philosophy. This thesis must be re-examined. One of the crucial cases in this point is the attitude of the Rabbis towards Socratic and sophistical methods of argumentation. The present study shows that, although the terminus technique for sceptical thinking did not emerge in Rabbinical thought until the middle ages, the problem itself goes back to mishnaic times. It was debated under the cover of a concrete metaphorical image: «to purify the reptile with numerous arguments». Evaluating this way of thinking during the Talmudic epoch three successive periods can be distinguished: 1) a negative attitude up to 200; 2) under the influence of neo-sophistical currents, a positive evaluation, especially from 200 till 300. 3) a critical attitude distinguishing between sophistical and dialectical methods.

At the end of the 15th century a Hebrew inscription on a gravestone found in Sagunto, having been wrongly read, was attributed to Adoniram, a tax collector of Solomon. The discovery aroused a long and excited discussion; many scholars denied its authenticity affirming that it was a literary fiction. But a wrong reading does not imply an epigraphic forgery. In this article the author brings new manuscript sources which confirm the authenticity of the find and show which was the place of the Jewish cemetery in Sagunto. He also tries to reconstruct the original text of the inscription.
