    No full text
Coplas de Yosef haŝaḍic by Abraham de Toledo consists of two types of stanzas. The absolute majority are quatrains that tell the Biblical story in verse. Intermingled with them are lyric poems in which emotions of the heroes or thanksgiving prayers are expressed. In the first two editions (Constantinople 1731-1732 and 1754-1755), out of the five known today, the lyrical poems are headed by epigraphs alluding to the original musical performance of Toledo's epic. The present article is an attempt to descipher these terms. Their majority refer to musical modes and rythms of the Ottoman art music tradition, while others refer to the melody of religious Hebrew poems which were well known to the circles where the work by Toledo was initially performed.

    Get PDF
The tablet RS 19.23 from Ugarit, written in Akkadian, presents a problem of reading and interpretation at the beginning of line 11. Several authors propose to identify the Ugaritic term qṭn in the passage under discussion. This article focusses on qṭn 'hardware' or 'vessel, receptacle' first, and it concludes giving reasons in support of the reading katinnu, Akkadian term which is used in Emar texts referring to a kind of weapon, and in RS 19.23 with the meaning of a labour implement. The words katinnu and qṭn, against the views of some specialists, cannot be considered as graphic variants of a single word.

Gedalya (1526-1587), considered by many scholars merely as a simplistic eclectic author, content with commonplace material from a few well-known chronicles, was not simply an undiscriminating copyst; rather, as we see especially in the examples cited from the part of his work concerning the persecution of Iberian Jews, Gedalya attempted to supplement and enrich the bare facts with new information based on additional Jewish and non-Jewish sources. Gedalya's aim was to provide information based upon his understanding of the situation and upon personal observation. These aspects determine his place in sixteenth century Jewish historiography.

Egyptian texts show how the peaceful contacts with trading aims hold by Egypt with its neighbours since the beginning of its history got formalized and controlled by the administration at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 19th century BC. These contacts took place through the «commissioner» (wpwtyw), acting as guide-interpreter or messenger of the king, or speaker or deputy of foreign embassies before the king. The relevance of the commissioners' role in the foreign affairs of the XVIIIth dynasty increased gradually, their actions being identified with those of the king himself, and their kingdom borders (t3š) with the perimeter of their actions.

The summary Biblical treatment of king Jehoahaz of Israel in 2 Kgs 13,1-9 (+ 22-23) poses a variety of problems: textual, chronological, redactional and compositional. This essay provides a detailed comparison of Josephus' account of Jehoahaz in Ant. 9.173-176 with its Biblical source. The comparison aims to see what can be determined concerning, e.g., the text- form(-s) of 2 Kgs 13 available to Josephus, his handling of the problems presented by the Biblical treatment of Jehoahaz and his own personal contributions in his retelling of that king's story.
