Were the Yeshivot in Spain Centers for the Copying of Books?
The subject of this article is the copying of Hebrew manuscripts in the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages. Geographical localities mentioned in the manuscripts' colophons are the basis for locating copy centers. Very little is known of the working environment of the Jewish scribes. The assumption is that this activity took place primarily in the patron's or scribe's own home. However, in the colophons from Sefarad important information can be derived; that is, that some manuscripts were copied in several yeshivot throughout Spain. This refers mainly to manuscripts copied during the 15th century until the time of the Expulsion. Herein I describe the yeshivot, their scholars, their scribes, and the persons who ordered their copies. Although the number of manuscripts containing this information is reduced, one may assume that other manuscripts were copied in a similar environment. In effect, the yeshivot were the Jewish scriptoria. This information sheds light on the culture of the Hebrew book in the Iberian Penninsula in the waning days of the Middle Ages.
After control of the city of Budapest was wrested from the Turks by Christian armies in 1686, the Jews of the Budapest ghetto presented a Memorial to their new monarchs pledging allegiance and expressing their desire to remain in Hungary. The text of the Memorial, which was reproduced by the historian Pizarro de Oliveros (1687), is nothing other than an abbreviated plagiarism of the sixth in the series of slanderous propositions that Isaac Cardoso includes in his Las Excelencias de los Hebreos (1679). It is not a translation from a German-language original.
The most ancient erotic poetry was born in Mesopotamia, towards the end of the 3rd millennium BC, as a component of the liturgies for the sacred marriage of Dumuzi and Inanna. Love poems are a literary genre of Phoenician origin, arising from the marzeaḥ, the sacred banquet which probably commemorated a dead god. Attested at least from the 14th cent. BC, love poems were introduced from Phoenicia into Mesopotamia during the Cassite period (14th-13th cent. BC) and into Ramessid Egypt (13th cent. BC). After 1200 BC, love poetry survived only in Phoenicia. The Song of Songs, written in Mishnaic Hebrew, cannot be dated prior to the 2nd cent. BC; it shows affinities with Egyptian love lyrics but we do not know anything of the link. The Song of Songs further gives a theological solution to the problem of the god traditionally conquered by death: on the basis of Platonic philosophy, it makes of Love a god stronger than Death. XIII a.C.).
New Information on Yom Tob Atias (alias Alvaro Vargas), Co-publisher of the Ferrara Bible
According to tradition, the Ferrara Bible (1553) appeared in print thanks to Abraham Usque's technical and artistic mastery and Yom Tob Atias's financial backing. Usque's alias was Duarte Pinel; Atias's was Jerónimo Vargas. In light of a 1556 notarial document, it is now known that Yom Tob and Jerónimo were not one and the same person. A different Yom Tob Atias (alias Álvaro Vargas) was Jerónimo's father. In the colophon to the Bible, Jerónimo wrote that he was Spanish. Yet in his commercial relations he is always documented as a Portuguese merchant. Though it is certain that he formally converted to Judaism, his date of conversion is unknown. Equally unknown is his Jewish adopted name.
The present article exams how Alfonso de Valladolid defends the concept of the Trinity in his book Libro de la ley. In order to situate this defense in its Medieval Judeo-Christian polemic context the comments on Alfonso's text are preceded by a brief description of how this polemic focused its arguments, on both the Jewish and Christian side, over the Trinity theme. The observations on Alfonso's text deal primarily with the Kabbalistic themes the author used to support his arguments, the accusation Alfonso waged against the Jews of having «covered up» their true belief in the Trinity, and Alfonso's view of the historical trend that leads humanity to the Trinity's revelation.
