    Get PDF
This article asserts that Abraham Ibn Ezra was the first to endow the Hebrew word mishpatim with a clear astrological meaning, and that he also played an important role in the creation of the parallel Latin word iudicia. It is indicated that the word mishpatim was extensively used by Ibn Ezra in its exegetical and scientific works, because the word faithfully reflected main aspects of his world vision. It is maintained that the creation of this word should not be seen as an isolated event but as a part of a more general pattern: the creation of a new Hebrew scientific terminology based on the biblical vocabulary. We reveal also that both words, mishpatim and iudicia, were introduced to the medieval Hebrew and Latin languages because of the direct intellectual influence that Ibn Ezra exerted after his death.

Manoel Lopez Bichacho, a XVIth Century Leader of the Portuguese Nation in Antwerp and in Pesaro

According to Samuel Usque's Consolaçam as Tribulações de Israel, in 1551, Manuel Bichacho, a Portuguese Jew living in Pesaro, entreated the Duke of Urbino to accept in his States a group of his countrymen who had been expelled from Ferrara, where they had been accused of having brought the plague. However, the desterro from Ferrara took place in the autumn of 1549 and not in 1551. Research carried out in Italian and Belgian Archives allowed us to identify Manuel Bichacho, the Jewish Portuguese banker in Pesaro, with the former Emanuel Lopez, a rich Marrano merchant of Antwerp who played an important role as one of the leaders of the Portuguese Nation in that city, and a member of the Rescue Committee which organised and financed the escape of Marranos from Portugal to Flanders and thence towards Ferrara and the Levant.

At the onset of the fifteenth century, the Jews of Plasencia were constrained to live in a district bordering Coria Street. The synagogue and guild hall were located there also. In the decade of the 1430's, the district extended to the Rua and Plaza thoroughfares. After the 1477 expropriation of the synagogue and Jewish dwellings by the Countess of Pimentel, and the expropriation of the remaining Jewish living quarters in 1480, the new synagogue and part of the Jewish quarter were located in Trujillo Street. After the Edict of Expulsion, the Deacon of Plasencia purchased the Jewish cemetery and other properties belonging to the Jews.

    Get PDF
The Darocan-born Pedro Ciruelo (XVI century), philosopher, theologian and scientist, prepared a literal, interlinear (verb for verb) translation of many books of the Hebrew Bible. He began this enormous task ca. 1526, and was still engaged in it twelve years later. In light of the literal, interlinear translation of the Pentateuch (1536), Alonso de Zamora (who apparently was his Hebrew teacher and academic mentor) composed a Hebrew poem in praise of the masterwork. The present article includes the edition of the original Hebrew poetic text (the provenance of which is MS. 589 of the Biblioteca Universitaria of Salamanca, fol. 274), its Spanish translation, and an explanation of the importance that Ciruelo and the converso Alonso de Zamora attributed to the extremely literal translation of the Hebrew Bible.

    Get PDF
Edward Nicholas is the pseudonymus of a Jewish author, who published in 1648 at London An Apology for the Honorable Nation of the Jews, which pleads for the return of the Jews to England, where they were expelled from 1290. The reason is that the Jews are profitable for the Republic, honorable and beloved by God. In 1649 a Spanish version appeared in Amsterdam. The author was probably Menasseh Ben Israel. The hypothesis is that the English version was published after the Spanish version.
