In the mid-fifteenth century, the descendants of the Jewish converts condemned by the Toledo Inquisition diversified their economic and profesional activities by imitating the ruling classes. They became actively involved in agriculture, entered religious orders, and acquired honorary titles, to such degree that they were readily able to integrate into mainstream society. That notwithstanding, they did not at the same time abandon their commercial interests, which provided them with an economic mainstay. Integration into the mainstream of Spanish society was not incompatible with maintaining prior specific commercial interests.
The Ortographic Irregularities in the Manuscript M1 of the Library of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid
In this paper, I study some ortographic irregularities of the text of the manuscript M1 of the Library of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. These are the cases of extraordinary points, suspended letters, inverted nuns, and large and small letters. I also analyze the masoroth of these cases, and compare them with those of the oldest manuscripts: Aleppo, Cairo, and Leningrad.
In this article, the author presents an analysis of the pathetic final verses of Psalm 138. It includes a detailed study of the verses based upon commonly accepted interpretations of them by various commentarists, and subsequently arrives at a new, possibly more accurate translation, one based upon a reading derived from other translations.
Some Ḥil•lûfîm Ben Asher/Ben Naftali in the Manuscript M1
The manuscript M1 (Madrid, Complutensian University Library) is being studied by the Hebrew Bible Team in the Instituto de Filología at the CSIC. We will be preparing the edition of the masorah of the Pentateuch in the next three years. This manuscript presents at the end of the Pentateuch four pages, written in three columns of fourty two lines each. This appendix contains, among other lists, a register giving the total sum of all the parašiyyôṯ, sedarîm, verses, words and letters in each book of the Pentateuch, and the exact number of variations BA/BN in each book. In this paper, I have studied the internal concordance of the variations BA/BN with the manuscript in the books of Genesis and Exodus. As a second stage, I have compared the lists with the ḥil•lûfîm recordered in other tiberian manuscripts, and with other ḥil•lûfîm lists, in order to have a broader scope of the subject.
This article examines eight examples of rabbinic interpretations of the first two sections («Bĕre'šît» y «Noaḥ») of Genesis Rabbah. Their commentary on the features of the text (plene or defective spelling, q ĕrê-kĕ tîb) uses a language similar to that of the masoretic notes. After verifying these examples in masoretic lists and treatises, the author analizes the function of these interpretations in the exegesis of the two sections. This research proves that the exegetical purpose of these examples is different from other interpretations of Genesis Rabbah based on peculiarities of the text.
Spanish, Portuguese, and Neo-Latin Poetry Written and/or Published by Seventeenth-and Eighteenth-Century Sephardim from Hamburg and Frankfurt (1)
This is the first of a two-part study the intention of which is to reproduce and evaluate Spanish, Portuguese, and Neo-Latin poetry written by 17th and 18th- century Hamburg-based Sephardim. The general conclusion is that considered in isolation these poems are, at best, circumstancial and of limited creative significance, but when considered as part of a pan-European literary phenomenon they represent an attempt to create a new literary discourse.
The identification of the archaeological site of Tárrega (Catalonia, Spain) as a synagogue is analized with documental, archaeological, contextual and typological arguments. The conclusion amends the traditional local explanations and offers a general model of medieval hispanic synagogues.
This article wants to emphasize the aid of the Spanish consul in Salonica, Teodoro Varela y Gil, to the Spanish colony as a consequence of the fire that happened in that city in 1917, leaving hundreds of Jewish people completely destitute. Among them there were many protected Spanish people who claimed financial aid. After a few difficulties, 20.000 francs were granted by the Spanish government and contributed to the distribution of the aids sent from Spain among the Sephardic community in Salonica. We would also like to mention the minister's negotiation, when a Spanish Sephardic group's complaints to the minister's government in Madrid were exposed. They protested against the law of expropiation of the burnt lands that the Greek government wanted to promulgate. They considered that it was a violation of property's rights, and that it will cause the loss of all their goods.
